Man, the company doesn't even have to pay for Pinkertons anymore, the local government has them covered.
Isn't that a form of socialism?

I have no beef with fast food. Farking delicious. Get back in the kitchen and make my food.

Well, bye.

FatPrincess: I have no beef with fast food.

You have no beef in fast food either!

"The crowd gathered and almost immediately started chanting:  "We can't survive on 8-25!"

Yes, we know that! That is why these are meant as fist time jobs for teens and young people still living at home who have no skills....because the job requires NO SKILLS!

FTA:  "I'm late on car payments"

I think I see part of your problem.

Very Boobies has a nice reference to the history of the war on workers rights. Good job Buzz.

The reality is there will soon be another 12 million non-skilled workers eligible to legally work in this country and they will be more than happy to take the 7.25/hour jobs.  Funny things is that the fast food restaurants keep saying that their profit margins are minimal and yet, how many McDonalds have you seen go out of business?

2013-07-31 11:19:45 AM
Is $8.25 that terrible for East St. Louis?  The place has been a synonym for urban decay for 40 years.

2013-07-31 11:19:58 AM
The protesters are calling themselves "The Molly McGuires"

2013-07-31 11:19:58 AM
I can't survive without McDonald fries.

Maybe with a trade or more education you wouldn't have to work for minimum wage.
Poor life choices are a biatch when the come back to bite you in the ass.

No protesting without a permit or corporate sanctioned permission.

Not quite as good as a chant.

How about, "Want to make bills? Get some skills!"

If you pay these people more they might spend it in the local economy, wtf kind of madness is that?

We should demand they get shiatty wages out of spite because they made bad life choices and stuff, and we don't mind subsidizing the company's profits by paying for their healthcare and food stamps because at the end of the day all we care about it making sure a poor person has a shiatty life.

2013-07-31 11:22:35 AM
They were nice and polite and followed the police officer's instructions. If you have to picket do it respectfully.

Not that they care what I think, but I can respect people who properly get their message across while being respectful.

People still try to protest the rich and powerful? In America?

Ha ha, what a bunch of idiots.

I've actually talked (in person) to Marco Rubio about just that. He spouted some nonsense about them being here anyway. He is one of my Senators from Florida.

Too bad the median age of fast-food workers is over 28, and women -- who make up two-thirds of the industry -- are over 32, according to the BLS.

Maybe if we had funded schools better, or emphasized skilled trades as much as we do college, or hadn't replaced the repetitive jobs in manufacturing with robots.

Scary thing for these workers is, we are maybe only a decade away from the automated fast food line being cheap enough to replace a few workers.

Can't survive on $8.25?
My.

If it's not illegal, it's ok.
Never forget that.

2013-07-31 11:26:41 AM
I like my protesters animal style. By which I mean naked.

2013-07-31 11:26:43 AM
I'm pretty sure they told you what the job paid before you took it. If you agreed to take the job at that rate you have no complaint now that you have it.

2013-07-31 11:26:44 AM
They can't survive on $8.25? Wonder how much their dumbasses are getting paid to stand out in the rain. Willing to bet it's considerably less.

Say that when, like some folks I know who have done retraining, education, and are good people and good workers. But they're over 40 now and corporations find reasons to shed workers over 40 like hair off a dog.

They want $15 an hour to drop fries in a fryer and assemble some burgers?  Are you farking serious?  Have they petitioned Mayor McCheese on this matter?

Silly protestors.  The constitution says you can have freedom of assembly, but with lots of small print, last line says "You cannot have freedom of assembly"

At one time the fast food places were staffed by high school kids trying to make a few bucks while going to school.

Considering the picture shows them holding a union sign, I wouldn't be so sure about that.

No, what you are saying is making a business pay their welfare for their poor life choices, instead of "welfare" which is what it is welfare, welfare where they tell you about programs where they will pay for free training, schooling, etc. You want a business to pay them what they are NOT worth making them think wow school, fark school kids big brother will make the man pay...yeah that's right no personal responsibility, power to the losers!

Except old people taught a generation of young people that fast food jobs are demeaning and shameful, and thus today's young people largely resolved not to work in fast food, no matter what. So it's left to the desperate, not the young, to feed the fat and lazy.

And the coal miners back in the early part of last century knew the jobs paid in company scrip and they'd be left owing money at the end of the week. It seems that we're really heading back to that mentality, and haven't learned a damn thing from the past.
Here's a hint: When things finally gave, it  turned out really, really bad for pretty much everybody.

I took a job busing tables at 15, because even back then I thought fast food was beneath me.  If I was an adult and had to work in fast food, I'd probably just kill myself.

Oh look, it's the bullshiat "all fast food workers are unskilled teenagers" narrative.

They should live well below the poverty line just because their job is simple?

meat0918: or emphasized skilled trades as much as we do college

Truth. You can make so much more money in the trades than you can in the service industry. I really wish that our society didn't bias people against the trades the way that it does - seriously, being a carpenter is hugely more prestigious than working at McDonalds.

And we're beginning to see a leadership vacuum in the trades. The time is absolutely right for people with limited education but genuine ambition. Ffs, an experienced senior superintendent can make $200,000+ / year in a large city.

People with no skills deserve a living wage, too.

The government has to force companies to pay higher wages because they would pay 10 cents a day if they could get away with it, "what they are worth" is a made up metric and it is made up by douchebags like you who are operating totally out of spite.
