(WTOP)   I really hate to tell you this, Virginians, but that email you got from a long-lost, recently deceased relative who left you tons of money and whose estate only needs you to send a small processing fee to distribute it? Yeah, it might be a scam   (wtop.com) divider line 29

It's actually Governor McDonnell trying to raise cash to pay back all those loans, which were totally legal and didn't have the appearance of impropriety at all.

All my relatives are poor and/or dead.  I know better.

S'okay. As long as that hypersexed beautiful 14 year old girl from the chatroom wants to suck my dick on a park bench after dark halfway across the country, I'll be aight.

Alas, Virginia: home or birthplace of eight Presidents, but only one since Reconstruction. What has happened to you?

I read something the other day:  why are there so many scams that claim to be Nigerians?  Doesn't everyone know about this kind of scam?

Yes, very nearly.  That's what they're counting on.

Only the most extremely gullible will read even beyond the first line of the email.

The scammers are trying to throw out an obvious scam signal up front so the ones that read through the message are that fraction of a percent of the most gullible that essentially self-select themselves to be scammed.

Scammers only tried this in The Great Commonwealth of Virginia because they know how wonderful and prosperous our citizens are.

I didn't read about anyone actually falling for this, so quit hatin' motherfarkers.

That's a fascinating idea: putting up a red flag specifically to trap people who ignore red flags, but do so in a way that the people who should really be turning you into the police won't bother.

(FUN FACT: Although some may think that the alternate name "419 scam" is an issue of political correctness, it turns out that this name is also a Nigeria reference. Fraud is covered under Article 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code.)

The "Sad" tag is fitting when victims are the elderly, who didn't grow up using computers like subsequent generations.  (Their minds may be a little cob-webbie, as well.)  Read the other day about a old guy who received a message from his "nephew," who needed money for bail.  He thought the name sounded familiar, so he attempted to make an ACH transfer from his grocery store.  Fortunately, the customer service manager knew him, and threw a flag on the play.

/people who get caught doing that shiat should be fed to hungry lions

A leader at a local church was nearly taken in by one of these scams. The criminal went so far as to have himself baptized as a member of the faith in order to win the confidence of the leader:

Fortunately, higher-ups within the church became aware of the interaction, and thus the Church of the Golden Shower was not robbed by the criminal.

It's desperately lonely; emailing its social security number to a nice Nigerian prince: wondering why you haven't called today.

I expect Coochinelli to propose two new anti-abortion and anti-sodomy laws to help stop this problem.

But if we encouraged more sodomy, we would have less need for abortion.

I work with a girl that thought it was "mean" what people did to the scammers. I told her they would gladly take teh gold teath out of her grandmother if they could. She still thought it was "mean" ahhhhh to be that naive.

She's naive, but she has a point. It is mean, and we shouldn't lose sight of that. It's part of how you keep the abyss from looking back.

Oh, I don't live in the U.S. My country is surprisingly small...20 inches at its widest point.

The thing scammers always count on is that the marks are greedier than them.
