Hopefully this is the pre-viz for the actual live-action opening for the next Riddick movie.

Huh. I thought it was because the studio wouldn't give him the money for anything that ambitious. Which is a shame.

I'd rather see a good low budget "Pitch Black" redux instead of a sloppy "Chronicles" sequel.

Yeah, if you want to get all literal about it.

I've heard the same.  I didn't hate Chronicles but it definitely took the pitch black universe in an unexpected direction (IMO).  If they can get back to be more in line with the first movie, the better (not talking about scary monsters necessarily).

Sorry, I can't care about that character anymore thanks to Chronicles.

2013-07-31 09:56:28 AM
I liked Chronicles.  It was kinda like the goth kids from South Park were trying to take over the Universe.

One Bad Apple: I'd rather see a good low budget "Pitch Black" redux instead of a sloppy "Chronicles" sequel.

What was wrong with the original that you feel it needs to be remade?  Or by "redux" did you mean "sequel"?  Personally, I feel like I've seen the Pitch Black story and I'd like to see another, different, Riddick story.  I didn't hate Chronicles, but I didn't feel like it was a Riddick story, just a story that happened to have Riddick in it.

Eh, from my understanding the new movie takes place on the planet from the first movie, with tons more monsters, so this is definitely less Chronicles and more PB.

Pitch Black was great when he was just some random criminal, but it lost its appeal to me when he was like a god-like being or something. Chronicles were just a blur to me. I think I watched it with my fingers mentally in my ears and my brain going "lalalala".

Based on the story shown this looks like a good segue to get him back to basics and down in the dirt again. I'm reservedly crossing my fingers on this one.

Wasn't Pitch Black low budget already?

A  modest budget of 23 million, which at the time of production wasn't cheap but certainly not expensive.

Honestly, I'd be happy if this WAS the first 5 minutes of the next Riddick movie.

This has been keeping me awake a night wondering about it, so I'm glad it's finally resolved.

2013-07-31 11:05:43 AM
Judging by the brief clip from the Trailer (I know, I know) it looks like a high level Necromonger shoots a circle around himself and cuts the cliff Riddick is standing on, so I think this IS a direct lead up to the first five minutes of the next movie.

And besides, Chronicles was more about Universe building for Riddick, introduces us to more of the worlds/races/tech for us to get a sense of where Riddick is and what he's got to compete against.

That and the excuse for a Conan ending upon the throne.

2013-07-31 11:08:08 AM
Maybe I missed something....but at the end of the short he was still on the throne...he just mentioned getting back to basics...

Might be time to dust off Escape from Butcher Bay and play through that bad boy once more.

Chronicles is a piece of shiat.  There's a line I remember because it was so stupid it was burned in: "There's gonna be one speed: MINE."

How fast is a Riddick?  How many Riddicks per hour did they need to travel to make it across the surface of the planet in time?

The previews I have seen makes it look like the plot from "Pitch Black' but replacing the civilian survivors with more bounty hunters and different monsters.

I like the orig just fine but "Chronicles" was a major deviation not just from the horror genre of 10 little Indians like the first "Alien" movie but it changes Riddick from being a somewhat badass normal escaped convict to some alien (he is not a human with a surgical shine job on his eyes he is a Furian) universe saving superhero.

I liked "Chronicles" too but it would have made a better Warhammer 40K movie than anything to do with Riddick

Chronicles rocked.  Haters gonna hate.

Shoulda taken the money, Tooms.

Also, take a shot every time Riddick either puts on or takes off his sunglasses.

Oh he's the last of a race of epic bad-asses called Furyans ('cuz they're, you know, full of Fury. Really, who names stuff like this, aside from L. Ron Hubbard?) or some such yadda yadda. I was too busy rolling my eyes too get too many details and as I said my brain was intentionally trying to ignore those parts. It's like when you're watching an hour-long anime and there's like a 10 minute-long contrived exposition on the intricate politics of why Clan A doesn't like Clan B.

There's some decent stuff in Chronicles, but they made the fundamental mistake of making Riddick the linchpin of galactic salvation.  I could have bought some of the Necromonger stuff if it had been on a smaller scale, but because it immediately escalates to a confrontation with the Lord Marshal it just falls flat.  It's as if the instant Luke boards the Death Star he starts fighting Darth Vader.

 Luke boards the Death Star

I don't think that ever happened in any of the movies actually.....

I'd be willing to suspend my disbelief with advanced hallucinogenics and/or blows to the head if they somehow manage to bring Claudia Black back.

Return of the Jedi. Luke turns himself in before Han and the rebels and Ewoks attack. He's taken to the Death Star with Vader and the Emperor. Come on man, that's basic shiat.

I forgot to mention the first Star Wars movie as well when the tractor beam pulls the Millenium Falcon on board.

I thought I read somewhere, or possibly from a Comic Con interwiew with Vin, that this animated short would be 1 of 2 (or possibly 3) to be released before the new movie.

/can't wait for new Riddick!

Yeah, it was great when he was just a killer. One that was playing the angles with his (admittedly aberrant) morals.

Yeah, just like Luke never actually used a lightsaber, and Han Solo was never actually seen piloting the Millenium Falcon.

It was pretty outstanding too. I'm surprised more people don't talk about and praise it

For everyone else, Dark Fury is an animated movie, some 32 min long,  that takes place between pitch black and chronicles involving pitch blacks characters. It's great!

I also seem to recall seeing a live-action companion thing on Sci-Fi before Pitch Black came out.

Ah, here we go:

Into Pitch Black

And Twohy's "Below" is pretty good, too. If you're into haunted submarine movies.
