I would have thought the vehicle would be at least a little more popular now, what with all the screen time it gets on Breaking Bad.

Kelly Blue Book lists this at $7200, so I don't know where TFA gets a Blue Book value of $2800.

Still a good value for a collector. Bad value for anyone else.

Is it actually an okay car, aside from its looks?

That black one isn't nearly as hideous as the others I've seen. Doesn't this car have ANYTHING to recommend it? Is it reliable? Durable? Good mileage? Anything? $3000 isn't much for a vehicle with only 8000 miles on it.

It's an okay car by Pontiac standards. It's pretty functional. But there's plenty of other things that are just as functional and don't look like a full pant load.

I hovered over the link and saw that it went to AOL. That would explain why they list it as being worth about half of what Kelley Blue Book lists it.

Not a bad deal really. As a Pontiac with only 8k miles on it, you could probably get another 60k miles out of it before things start breaking. That's a pretty good value for $3000. And if you buy it for your teenaged son, he will never catch an STD or get a girl pregnant. win-win.

We had one of these for a while.  Actually it was a really great car, had the tent and the little shelf in the back that you could pull out worked really well with my grandfathers hoverround wheelchair.  made it much easier for me to lift in the back, those suckers are pretty heavy.  Never had an issue with it and it rode like a dream.

No way is a 2001 Aztec wroth $7200. You're talking about a 12-year old car that no one wants to own if it was brand new.

We had one at work for a while, I enjoyed driving it more than the Jeep Liberty that we also had. A former roomie had one, which was instantly dubbed the Asstec.

It has some interesting features if you're the out doorsie camping type. I'll go out on a limb and assume the reliability is on par with a Grand Am, and that the handling is going to be quite minivan like.

Whenever I hear about the Aztec I think back to early Survivor (back when I watched the show) and how hard they tried to make winning one sound like a great prize.

/That was the first I heard of one
//Everything I've heard of them since then has confirmed my initial assessment

Hey, I had almost that exact same experience. Replaced one engine, then the radiator exploded one night on my way home from work. The cylinder head warped so I replaced it. Then I decided to trade it in on a Cherokee. As I was pulling it around into the wholesale lot (the dealer was a family friend, I'd worked there in college), the transmission started slipping. It got parked, never to move under its own power again. I hated that farking automobile.

Scarier is that I remember what it looked like as a "futuristic" proto show model at the car show.

It looked like the Aztek but one that had a bad case of the Gumperts all over the place.

The Liberty is a terrible vehicle. Not as much storage space for the Cherokee, which it replaced. Also, the 3.7 liter V6 is a poor but compact replacement for the bulletproof 4.0 liter straight-6 that Jeep used for ages. I put over 200k miles on two examples of that engine. Never a failure. I miss the Cherokee.

Pretty much everyone who's ever had an Aztek will tell you that they're stupidly practical. Pontiac had a ton of great ideas with that car, and executed them well. On the inside. However, I think the exterior was designed thusly: Pontiac got 10 designers together, and had them each work on a particular area of the body. None of them were allowed to look at what the others were doing. Then, they handed it over to an 11th person who made everything all go together. It was one of GM's most spectacular failures ever, mainly because the Aztek, having all the innovative features it did WOULD have been crazy popular if they hadn't made it look like a complete turd.

I was working at a car dealership in 2001 when one of these was brought in as a trade-in.  Sat on the lot for over a year before someone bought it.

Every time I saw an Aztec I thought to myself, what a f*cking horribly ugly vehicle.

after the 3rd engine block cracked in mine, that sucker sat under a tree for 2 years until some dude drove by and offered to buy it.  sold it for 75 bucks.

Also - if I remember correctly - the vehicles sold by the GM Heritage Center were done via "Bill of Sale", meaning they could not be titled or registered for use on public streets.  That might hurt the value of any vehicle some.

Not sure how one racks up 8000 miles on a vehicle that can't be driven, though....

It looks like a Pontiac minivan, but with the rear roof notched shorter, the doors switched to swing instead of slide, and a loaded diaper welded to the front end. Why not just get a minivan and have more space, more versatility, more cool?

IIRC the dealer gave me $500 in trade on it and got less than that at wholesale auction. It was one of those guaranteed minimum trade-in value deals, honestly I was just glad to be rid of it.

At one point, the heater core gave out at 80 mph on the highway one frosty morning, filled the interior with steam. That thing was a menace. Leaked more oil than it burned, and it burned a lot.

As for the 2014 Cherokee, when the design chief has to defend the car's looks at its unveiling, that's a sure sign of failure on many levels.  I understand there's a lot of competition in that segment (cross-overs, light SUV's, or whatever moniker they use now), but trying to out-do the competition with extreme corner wrapping headlights is like being stoned and doing yokel impressions at a Tea Party Convention.

2013-07-31 06:41:31 PM
Given how over-priced the used car market is these days (thanks, unintended consequences of "cash-for-clunkers program!) $3,000 for anything that can roll, esp. one with not many miles on it, wouldn't be too bad.

GM made a car like that, though it was intended more for upscale crossover buyers than campers. Built on the Aztek platform but not ugly, and still pretty practical. It was called the Buick Rendezvous, and it was popular.

I love our Aztek.
It's an excellent car, and it looks badass.

You go right ahead and keep driving your identical crap cars.
I'll keep calling you fools.  Partly because of the cars you drive.

I'd buy another one in a second if they still made them.

2013-07-31 08:06:32 PM
I used to sell used cars, and we turned over a lot of them. There are some die-hard Aztek fans out there. Still ugly as sin, and has an issue with the all-wheel drive, and the intermediate steering shaft, and oh yeah, eternal check engine lights. But hey! It came with a armchair console cooler and a tent....
