Just bought tickets for Bucs-Cards on Sept 1, first Pirates game in over 20 years. I am jumping on the bandwagon!

mactheknife: I grew up watching the likes of Stargell, Robinson, Sanguillen and Ott at Three Rivers Stadium.

I've endured 105 loss seasons, Jason Thompson, Dale Berra, George Hendrick and "Operation Shutdown."

For the past two decades, the team has been woefully mismanaged both on and off the field.

Call me if they're in first place on September 1st and I'll get excited.  Until then, I'm not falling into the trap I've fallen into countless times before.

Jason Thompson. Wow.

I recall being at Three Rivers for a playoff game vs. Atlanta and it wasn't sold out, because the Penguins home opener was that night.

Allow me to quote Randy Quaid in Major League 2:

"THEY'LL BLOW IT IN THE PLAYOFFS.  THEY WILL.  THEY'LL BLOW IT IN THE PLAYOFFS!"

KingKauff: Photobucket is blocked at work. Someone please post a picture of "the slide" so that the uppity Pirates fans can be put back in their proper places.

/BTW, did I mention I live in Pirates Country now?
//I try not to mention I'm a Braves fan around these parts
///it is weird to see the sports section of the Tribune-Review with a Pirates cover in July, however

Why not just enjoy the possibility of the Bucs finishing the season over .500 for the first time in 20 years?  Geez Louise.

Every Braves fan can go kiss Barry Bonds ass and his weak-ass arm.

If at this point the Pirates finish 82-80 but don't even get into the phony baloney one game playoff, Pirates fans should be just as angry as ever

Nope.  At this point, 81-81 would suit me just fine.  A disappointment perhaps, but it wouldn't be like the past, oh, 20 years or so.

If they blow a good season by playing 20 games under 500 in August and September for the third straight year that would absolutely be just as bad, even if they limp to 82 wins just because they had a bigger cushion for failure

Glenechocreek: Dear Pittsburg Pirates,

Please knock the stuffings out of the Dodgers in the playoffs.

Sincerely,
San Francisco

To San Francisco: We don't normally like you, but in this case we'll make an exception.  Let the Dodgers fall.

Sincerely,
San Diego

You guys better hope the Dodgers run out gas soon. Right now they look unbeatable. Never say die with the bats and a rotation that has Kershaw, Ryu and Greinke and if Wilson has his fastball in the pen they could be a downright monster in the playoffs

ongbok: Wasn't the Yankees/Mets World Series one of the lowest rated television broadcasted World Series? That is what I heard anyway.

I guess I could be wrong based on real numbers... but if that's true it goes toward what I've always thought.  Don't people like an underdog?

I was hooked for Tampa Bay, Colorado, etc. in the series.  But the last thing I want to see is the Yankees or Boston again.  I'm not all that much of a Yankee hater... it would just bore me.

I was excited to see them win in 1996 for the first time in a long time... but after that, enough already.

I would love a Pittsburgh/Oakland series.

I'm a long-suffering Pirates fan, and, like a hopelessly geeky fat guy who somehow landed a smoking hot girlfriend, I'm just waiting for the folks to hop out of the shrubbery with the camcorders and yell "GOTCHA!" or for her to turn into a vampire and try to kill me, because I've seen this movie before, I know how it ends..... Right around when you start feeling good is when the universe painfully restores it's cosmic equilibrium.   Wake me when we have a realistic "magic number" for a winning season and then I'll (stupidly) get emotionally invested.

I once saw a Pirate team with a winning record play the Expos at Three Rivers, if that gives you any idea of why I'm STILL not sure this isn't just a dream.

In my mind, I heard that exactly in Skip's voice :)  I still remember my old man jumping up and shouting for joy when Bream scored.  Second-greatest moment in Braves history (the first was Hank Aaron and #715).
