I think that many Conservative leaders do realize what hasn't been advertised very much - Obamacare is the first step towards Single Payer. Hell, it's already happening in Vermont. (I am very much in favor of this, btw)

The problem is trying to explain that in bumper sticker slogans and sound bites doesn't work so well, so it's reduced to "Obamacare is Socialism!" And no one stops to think "Is that a bad thing?"

I know, Reagan made that record about the "evils of Socialism" in the 60's, but I can't believe that still has THAT much sway.

So... this could be an opportunity for a Republican in a divided district to own it, so that when his or her reelection comes around, he or she can point to all the good things that came of it.

They played it ad nauseum in early 2009. Then people pointed out that Reagan was shilling for the AMA, who were calling for reform this time around.

A Monday report conducted by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service states that the implementation of Obamacare would continue even if Republicans forced a government shutdown by demanding to withhold the law's funding.

"It appears that substantial [Affordable Care Act] implementation might continue during a lapse in annual appropriations that resulted in a temporary government shutdown," the report said.

Way to be vague, guys. Which is it?

Most likely the same dribble we hear today: SOSHALIZUM!!!*  The AMA hasn't always been the most progressive org, as far as I can tell.  Not many industry groups are.

*No, that's not fair - they would have at least spelled it right.  It was a more enlightened age of unenlightenment.

Well, yeah. The brilliant plan isn't that shutting down the government will make Obamacare regs go away. It's to threaten a shutdown over Obamacare, so that Ted Cruz can go on TV and scream that Tyrant McDictator has shut the government down because arrogant usurper Alinsky Sharia.

At this rate the GOP outreach for 2014 will be youtube videos of nothing but Republicans saying "homosaywhat" interspersed with cuts of Democrats saying "what".

It will entrance Brian Kilmeade like jingling keys do a baby.

Shutting down the government is about stopping Obamacare because the government is shut down, it's about using the shutdown as leverage in defunding Obamacare.

You know, it really wasn't always this way. It's easy to blame racism, but I suspect any big city Dhimmycrap would have met with similar results. The last 3 were all from god-fearin' Southern States. They realize that a fundamental shift has occurred, and it scares the shiat out of them.

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The Red Scare and a nation's name. That was all it took.

Yes, Americans were and are that gullible.

It's because Obamacare doesn't actually  do anything. It just messes with the tax code to try to make more people buy insurance. And you know they're never going to shut the IRS down, no matter how stupid they get in congress.

2013-07-30 09:16:47 PM
Um, republicans are not forcing a gov't shutdown to force obamacare to end, they're threatening a gov't shutdown if they don't get it defunded.

In other words, they want to force democrats to defund obamacare to get them to extend the debt limit.

If democrats were such morons in explaining the good things in it, republicans would be crucified for doing such a thing. But, sadly, it appears they'll probably be cheered.

It's pretty crazy that we would allow Federal spending to stop completely when Congress can't pass a spending bill. It seems like having an automatic extension until the spending bill is passed would go a long way to alleviating the panic that arises when the government isn't able to come to an agreement in time.

2013-07-30 09:52:31 PM
Making veiled threats to shut down the government is making veiled threats of terrorism. At least the other terrorists have the balls not to be veiled about it.

It doesn't completely stop. For example, Congress and the President still get paid. Priorities, you know.

Here's an article about the possible ramifications.

How about they replace it with a public option or, God forbid, single payer, like every other sensible first-world nation?
