let's throw out all the rules we don't agree with.

I don't think there should be an infield fly rule
or a balk rule
or baselines, as long as they go in sequence.
or rules on dead balls, run whenever you feel like it.
or rules about fair and foul.  hit the ball, start running.
or rules against player contact, go ahead and tackle the guy running the bases.
or balls and strike, your at bat ends when you hit the ball
etc...

For a sport that's entirely about its own history, baseball fans all over should be very much upset about PEDs.

Did you ever see Steve Carlton pitch?  He was speeding his nuts off.

I don't give a rat's ass about PEDs.  Never have.  And until I hear a short rational reason why I should, I probably never will.

Yes, we are entertained.

However, we will be more entertained by watching the destruction of douchebag ARod and seeing all his accomplishments wiped from the Earth.  It is not hypocrisy.  It is the desire to crush ARod and see him driven before us, and to hear his womanly lamentation 'I lost my purse!'

Many of the sophisticated PEDs are illegal, and getting involved with them often means getting involved to some degree with an illegal operation. Secondly, many of the steroids can pose some potentially devastating long term health effects. Many of the current players do not feel the should have to break the law and put their bodies at risk to compete against those who do. Why do you think that no one in MLB is coming to Braun's defense?

It's this addiction to history that's killing the sport. "Someone's better than this guy in the '30s? Must be roided up!" Clinging to history like that is a tacit admission that the game today isn't as good as the game a century ago...so why should anyone go see it?

Well enjoy it while it lasts, because without those ogres baseball is headed the way of boxing and horse racing straight into the pile of sports no one gives a shiat about.

We can argue whether or not it should be allowed.  We can even argue whether or not we should care.

But as long as it's explicitly against the rules, this half-assed enforcement punishes those who played by the rules and lost their careers to someone who cheated their way into the lineup.

And living in a society that rewards dishonesty and selfishness frankly sucks, even if the baseball games are more exciting.

This is a social issue -- you're either pro-lying or you're not.  If you "don't care" about PEDs, then you have absolutely no moral ground to complain about government corruption or corporate sociopathy.  You can argue that one isn't the other, but there is no gray area in terms of whether or not you're encouraging dishonesty.  If you don't care if some baseball players lie about drugs, which causes someone to lose their job, what the fark do you have the right to complain about some banker or prosecuter lying and getting YOU fired?

So, I'm curious as to what percentage of players are still using PEDs, in your opinion? I'd like to think most (94%) are clean.

What integrity?  Like back in the good old '20's when players threw the World Series?  Or maybe the 70's when they just kept speed in the clubhouse?  Don't even get me started on wife swapping...

Probably for a different discussion, but baseball needs to make some upgrades. My two cents:

*Do NOT listen to purists. Purists are dinosaurs. Embrace replay in full already. It's 2013 FFS.
*Give managers once chance a game to throw a challenge flag a la the NFL for close calls. This way we're spared the manager arguing (in futility) with the ump for several minutes.
*Speed the game up. No more Garciaparra-like actions and stepping out of the batters' boxes to adjust equipment for twenty seconds between pitches. Get back in the box, sparky.
*By the same token, pitchers need to throw the next pitch before the shortstop's birthday.
*Shorten the season and end it before Labor Day. MLB would own August.  Once NFL kicks off baseball is all but forgotten as evidenced by recent ratings for the World Series.
*Let managers wear Docker pants and a golf shirt. Do we need to see a 70-year-old in stirrup socks?

I'd go lower, about 78.925% are clean

There's an argument to be made that using hgh or related peds, under medical supervision is no more dangerous than the choice to become a professional athlete in the first place. I get that. But there's still the reality that if baseball were to allow peds, there would suddenly be no room left in the sport for anyone who doesn't want to use them. For those calling for loosening the ban -- is that the sport you want?

Let 'em juice.  Also require that they report everything they are taking.  And monitor their muscle growth, side effects, net performance, long term health, etc.  For $20 million/year, we should learn everything we can about these athletes.  Professional guinea pigs.

Yeah, I can't help but wonder what kind of edge juicing would give in such a sedentary sport.

I mean, in cricket - baseball's closest cousin, we have Phil Tufnell, whose drug of choice was weed.

Oh, wait, I've just discovered the main difference between cricket and baseball on the Test Match Special wiki page:

While the levity in the commentary box has reduced somewhat since Johnners' death there is still a recognition that no matter how seriously fans may take their cricket it is, after all, only a game. Po-faced commentary is not TMS's way. Not every listener is happy with Henry Blofeld's continuous references to buses, pigeons and aeroplanes, but most feel that the programme would be the poorer without him for all his eccentricities.
Ahh.

Any tacit acceptance of juicing just drives thousands of high school athletes to fark themselves up in pursuit of a major league career.  Once it is accepted that you have to juice to make the majors, the pressure starts very early, in the young teens.  If their heroes get paid millions to juice and no one cares, these kids are going to be roiding out like crazy.
