They found that the dogs tended to move their left eyebrow upwards around half a second after seeing their owner.

The advice in this article will be totally practical as soon as I get a video camera that will be perpetually focused on my dog and can provide me with instantaneous slow-motion playback.

For my dog it's often even simpler.  toy/bone in mouth, outside doing anything = definitely happy dog.  Otherwise, still most likely happy.

That's a happy dog.

I thought about getting one of those for my next dog, but then thought, in the city, it will probably be miserable.

This is Sophie from about a 2 years ago. Sure she looks harmless, but those are black soulless eyes.

Now she's almost 100lbs and still filling out.

This is Lina about 1 year ago right after we rescued her. Same thing with the black soulless eyes.

My American Bull always looks so sad and pitiful.  Ears and head are down most of the time, and eyebrows are up.  She gets non-stop love and attention - and outside of an occasional stern "No" or "Damnnit Sookie"....she has never really been yelled at or scolded.  Can't figure out why she always looks so timid.

American Bulls are suppose to be a very confident breed.

I should count my blessings though - she really is the perfect dog.  Most loving and attentive dog that I have ever known.  Just a bit of a bull in a china closet and doesn't realize how big she is.

Makes me sad that she looks so sad all the time, even while getting love and affection.

They also say it could because the animals were experiencing conflicted emotions - joy at seeing their owner but sadness at not being able to reach them through the partition.
Dr Nagasawa said: "One explanation for this result is that presentation of the owner elicited both negative and positive emotions.
"A negative response might appear ... perhaps because the dogs could not approach and touch their owners despite seeing them through the partitions."

That sounds useful...  they recorded the dogs but were not even sure if they were making them happy or upset.

GF's dog (boxer/pit mix) pretty much only stops wagging his tail when it's time for him to go into his room when we're both going to be out of the house. Otherwise no matter what else he may be doing, it's always going- occasionally hard enough that it looks like his butt can't keep up with it (and since his tail isn't clipped, it's actually been injured a few times...).
