(NPR)   A guide to the secret meanings of tattoos. Hint: They all pretty much boil down to "I'm a predictable douchebag who makes poor long-term decisions" in the end. Not you, though, those tribal armbands are totally rad   (npr.org) divider line 470

I don't understand the prevalence of tribal tattoos (or barbed wire. or chinese characters). Do people see them and suddenly think, "I want that stenciled on my body for the rest of my life?" Or "That looks cool, I'm going to do it" and don't stop to think they're just sheep following a lame trend that will be out of style a few years down the road and they'll be stuck with it still?

And what's the deal with airline peanuts?

I think the "in-crowd" inked hate the "sh*ts and giggles" inked more than we squares.  I like a good tattoo, a combination of appropriate color, design and execution.  But I've also seen a ton of terrible ones as well as really well-done-but-inappropriate ones on visible body parts.

Example: Lords of Acid album art on the forearms of one sailor from my old ship.  Yep; he had ALL the STDs, apparently.

I've got one:  My name and the distaffboppers name on a scroll with a couple of hearts pierced by a single arrow.

Yes, I know.  And I knew back then, too.

It's stood the test of time, though.  That tat is 20 years old now, and we're still together, and I thus expect it will ever be.

Personally, I would never hire someone with tattoos at my business.  I try to run a very professional organization.  Tattoos are UNprofessional.  If my customers were to come in and see someone in tattoos, what would they say?  They wouldn't say that my business is professional.  That's for sure.

This just in.......

Tats actually have personal meaning for the people that get them.

They are alot like spouses...... Some people choose confidently and go through life proud of their ink.

Others are just idiots who stumbled into a tat parlor....

I grew up going to the cape for the summer every year and the ocean and sailing were a part of my life as a kid, I would get a small nautical tattoo to signify crossing the equator or whatever if I actually did it... till the day comes when I am rich enough to actually buy and sail an ocean worthy boat I will remain tattooless which probably means I will remain tattooless for life...

While my marks actually have specific symbology and the reasoning behind each glyph, I have to admit that getting a tattoo just because you think it looks nice is as legitimate as any other reason.

My main caveat would be one of placement rather than design.  If you think a butterfly on your back or barbed wire on your arm looks nice or whatever, more power to you, it's your money and you're allowed to do your own thing.  But if you get marked anywhere that isn't covered by standard white-collar businesswear (which you'll have to wear even as a blue-collar worker for things like job interviews) then you are explicitly asking business acquaintances to judge your aesthetic taste, and that in itself sort of says something negative about your decision-making skills because that's a really dumbass thing to do.

//I guess the exception might be if you work in a tattoo parlor, but even then it's not really possible to show off your OWN skill with a forearm sleeve.

Interesting how the face and forearms are red (worst) while the hands are blue (not so bad).
I would say forearms are at the lower end of the spectrum for most people, they're the single most common placement for traditional sailor tattoos back in the day. hands and face I understand, used to be that you had to earn a tattoo on the face or even the hand, as in you couldn't get them from a tattooist that cared about such things until you were heavily tattooed all over. I was told not to get tattoos anywhere a Judge would see them, which is hands and face, possibly neck.
So I just had a life-size picture of Zimbabwe on my scrotum.

I dunno, I had lobe stretches for a long time, working in a professional office, and even going to client sites.

I made decent money.

I took my stretches out in 2000, but still have large holes in my year, and my salary has only gone up.

OK.  I mean, telling us this is kind of like saying you prefer blondes to brunettes, or think that people that wear blue jeans are unworthy of your attention.  It's nice that you've got strong opinions and all, but all you're really telling us is that you're too young to have learned any real criteria for judging people or just not the brightest crayon in the box to begin with.
