'If you look at it on its face value at this point, it's not hard to come to the conclusion that excessive force was used,' Mendelson said.

But we'll keep looking at it until we don't come to that conclusion

I'm outraged there was a guy with a knife and he wasn't shot 14 times. They're amateurs when it comes to excessive force. The post-shooting tazing does go some way towards compensating for the lack of multiple clips being used.

I thought all cops were allowed to murder their fellow citizens with impunity.  I had no idea the Canadians were so squeamish about such things.

You'd think it would be one fatal shot and 8 for good measure.

It's like an innocent knife wielding maniac can't be safe on the street without being attacked for no reason.

That's nothing.  You should see what happens in Philly when you carry a gun around.  You'd think the cops had never seen one before.

Shortly after, three shots are fired. After a pause, six more shots are fired. A Taser is later used on Yatim.

Was this kid Vigo the Carpathian?

Less paperwork, no civil lawsuit, and probably a free paid vacation while he "recovers emotionally."  Why wouldn't the cop make sure to kill instead of injure?

Exactly! How dare the OPP protect that bus driver & possible other passengers from knife wounds.

Just not convinced that this is excessive force...maybe, maybe not?

Yes, let's not blame the criminals. Everything is the police officer's fault.
If one does not want to get shot, one should not haphazardly wield a knife.
I mean, I've never been shot. Strange how that works.

You mean like prejudging the circumstances, and trying the officials in the media long before all of the facts are available and a trial has been concluded. Then yes. We're just like the US.

Personally, I f*cking hate the way news organizations sensationalize media events. Everything is for entertainment, screw the facts (the recent Boston bombings were the sickest events I'd seen on television in years...not one scrap of humilty or facts, it was all about the fun of hunting the bombers and thrill of seeing it all live on t.v.)

That asshole commie rag The Toronto Star and that biatch Rosie Dimanno (someone needs to shut her mouth), is leading the charge again with "lets fry the police because they're evil" charge. I f*cking hate the TTS. I wouldn't wipe my arse with that piece of sh*t newspaper.

Cops tell you to drop the knife and you don't expect to get shot...maybe not nine times but you're gonna end up in the ER or dead.

No sympathy here for the dead teen.  You don't want to get shot by police?  Then don't threaten people with a weapon and don't stand there like a moron brandishing it when the police show up and tell you to drop it.

The only reason people are all up in arms about this is because of the number of shots the officer took.  He should be sent back to the shooting range until he can hit a target in less than 9 shots.

2013-07-30 09:21:04 AM
It's hard to tell exactly what happened but it looks like he was close enough to be a danger to the cops.

How horrible, you choose to display your ignorance.  Here, go play with the database to see how "racist" Florida is with SYG laws.  It's almost like african american's benefit from the law at a higher rate than whites...

That's the weird thing -- the guy is apparently in an empty streetcar and thus not a threat to anyone else; they could have started by tasering him.  It's as if they shot him a few times, then they remembered, "oh yeah, we have this other doodad we're supposed to use."

We only give our cops here 9mm's.
less than 14 rounds might just piss him off and cover him in tomato sauce.

Cops are so out of control.

FTFA:...officers yell, "Drop your knife!."

Ever think to use the word please?

I could swear the usage of tasers was sold to the public on the premise of being used in place of guns and not after guns.

An awful situation all around.  Ideally the police could have disarmed a teenager with a knife without killing him - there were no bystanders nearby at risk.  On the other hand, he was waving a knife and refused to drop it, so I have some sympathy for the cops too.

2013-07-30 09:28:35 AM
As I understand up here, tasers are only issued to sergeants, not to your everyday constables, and the sergeant wasn't immediately available when the first shot was fired.  Plus, he's still gripping the knife after he goes down, hence them repeating "DROP THE KNIFE!" in the video after he gets shot the first three times.  And tasers are single-shot, only effective within a short range, and you don't want to be in that range if the other guy has a knife.

People are losing their minds over it up here, but there's still a ton of facts to come out.

Meaning the guns likely just slowed him down. You can hit a guy in the head with a 9mm and have him keep fighting. I hate police brutality and cops in general thanks to my encounters with multiple corrupt arrogant pigs but when some fool pulls a weapon and doesn't drop it when faced with a bigger weapon... open season...

/this is how guns cure stupid

Don't want to get shot, don't wield a knife at another human.  One bullet to the brain, 14 bullets, what's the difference?  Maybe he was trying to shoot the knife out of his hand, like in the movies, and it just took him 13 shots to stop him from advancing.  I just can't find the outrage here.

2013-07-30 09:32:17 AM

9 shots...

That's pretty much all the countries ammo
He gave the guy 8 warning shots
He was aiming for the knife
Canuck policeman carry .22 pistols because they're limp wrists can't handle more. He still had 11 in the mag.
In the U.S. the cop would have reloaded (twice in Florida)
In the U.S. they would have shot the cameraman
I was wondering when El Capitan would get a chance to use his pop gun.

oldpickupguy: Indarwinsshadow - you might want to talk to someone about that rage.  The SWAT team in your neighborhood is armed.

Yeah, I'm a tad raw on the subject. I'm a new O.P.P. officer with less than 3 years on the force. What I deeply dislike about the job is the duality. People love to call the police to solve every problem they have (fights with boyfriend/girlfriend, noisy talkers outside of their windows on the sidewalk, kids playing basketball in front of their house), but when you're there, you're in the spotlight. If you fart, someone registers a complaint with the OIPRD. Everyone is looking for an excuse to blame and become instantly famous.
In this case, the media is jumping all over the case, long before all of the facts have been established. We don't know what happened on the bus. He might have tried to stab the officer(s). Who knows. I don't, I wasn't there. It's the sensationalizing of the events I object to.
