Also, they missed a point: an independent Scotland could ally itself with Russia if there was a good enough reason for it to happen.

I have a strong feeling that an independent Scotland would immediately join NATO

The point they are trying to make is that Russia is evil, and Scotland, being protected by the warm, good light of the West, better keep it's mouth shut and it's ass right where it is if it knows what's good for it.

Yep. They'd probably join the Commonwealth, too.

Even if both of those are no, I doubt that the UK would be too pleased with Russian troops on their island.

They would still be in the EU, and Ireland has managed to avoid a Russian invasion without much trouble.

Inevitably I think we are moving towards a system of roughly half a dozen alliances (of varying degrees of equal treatment among members).  Scotland has the fossil fuel resources to be a valuable player but it will be a chip on the international table, likely becoming very close to the US as the UK is now.  I do not think of Scotland as a Scandinavian nation though it would be interesting to see Edinburgh develop closer ties with the homelands of is former Viking overlords.

True.  It is no longer the land of hardened savages weilding claymores that kept England at bay for years.  Last I checked they were fry-daddy fattened poofs who drink too much and fight over footsie-ball all the time.

You have to be kidding me. When was the last time America/Russia/China/France/Britain got bombed by terrs? I'm probably about to get bombed before I can eat my lunch today. And again in my sleep tonight.

But when was the last time Ireland had a bunch of outside terrorists shoot up a mall there? (Notice I said "outside" terrorists.)

Finland had that same problem but was within tank driving distance.  Guys like White Death and the fine invention of the Molotov cocktail and winter sort of upset the Russian plans there.

I think the Scotts will be fine.  They have a long history of inventing things to cause invaders to leave.

It would be too difficult for Russia to defend Scotland should they attempt to occupy it. We can safely assume that Scotland would join NATO so any aggression towards Scotland would be met by the members of NATO. Russian supply ships/aircraft would have to cross a good deal of NATO controlled and or patrolled areas which would decrease the likelihood they would successfully complete the journey. Without resupply of ammunition to the Russian forces occupying Scotland limited engagements by British forces along the border would deplete the Russian forces and give them no option other than surrender.

My family is from Scotland.  I just got UK citizenship last year.
I wonder if I will be eligible for Scottish Citizenship if they do pull it off.

It's a bit weird, I got the citizenship to be closer to my Scottish roots (oh and to be able to work in the EU and all, that's a big perk) , and now, it looks like I may just end up being a Brit...

The rest of Europe has the Irish and the Czechs on its side. I'd call it a fair fight.

Wait... hasn't the UK thing been working ok for like 300 years?

Are Scottish secessionists actually, like, legit, or are they easily dismissible dumbasses like the Texas Secessionists or the Quebec Secessionists, that only get press because of Sean Connery's devolution into an "Old Man Yells At Cloud" archetype?

Quebec secessionists? You mean those guys who almost won a referendum to secede not yet 20 years ago, and won 60% of the francophone vote in a province where over 80% of the population speaks French as a first language? Yeah, I'm sure it would be wise for the Canadian political establishment to just ignore those crackpots.

I read somewhere that because of the movie that nearly all of the homes in the town are now owned as vacation homes and the locals have moved elsewhere.
