A night shift crew was working, and many people are thought to have been killed, said Lt. John Herrell, a Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Crap.

This was almost me a few weeks ago. We had one (of 24) Silane exhaust lines go.  Shook the whole damn building.  If the main Silane store had gone, it would have blown us all to hell.

I'm watching this right now and semis full of propane tanks are going up left and right.

Firefighters can't even get in there yet to try to fight the fires.

Cripes. Another semi just went up.

Jeez - individual tanks are launching. 5 rigs have gone up and are maybe 100ft from what looks like three
large propane storage tanks.

There are what looks like 4 large storage tanks - a row of 3 on one side and then a single one
at a right angle to the the row of three - scarily close to the major blaze.

They were loaded down with filled 5 gal. propane tanks. Wherever the fire initially started, it got to the
trucks and that's all she wrote. I'm just hoping that the fire stays away from the larger storage tanks.

From what they're saying on the live feed is that the semis near the plant were full of empty propane tanks, the kind you use with a propane barbeque, but that there's enough residue inside each one of them to make them explosive. One of the things the plant does is fill those propane tanks.

2013-07-30 12:55:05 AM
Good to see some lessons from West, TX being applied so quickly, that firefighters are keeping defensive positions and only moving in so far as they are certain they can get pulled back out. Hopefully casualties can still be kept to a minimum.

I just didn't know if they were close enough to ignite on their own or not. I only jumped in after all the ruckus slowed down so I wasn't sure if it originated there or if it was because of the first explosions/fires

FACTOID: Those barbecue tanks are designed to hold 20 lbs. If you take it to a local refiller, they'll fill it to 20 lbs.

Blue Rhino has been steadily reducing the amount of propane that it puts in these tanks for years: They're down to 15 lbs now - 25% below capacity, because they know consumers are suckers who don't check the label and pay the price.

No, you're not getting stronger, that Blue Rhino propane tank is getting lighter.

Not surprised at all.
I worked on Delta IV in California and watched from a distance as an untrained delivery driver used a steel hammer to free a frozen LH2 fitting. Had to yell at him using the facility PA system to tell him to stop and leave the area. Lucky he didn't kill us all. No surprise that it's one of the many reasons I don't work there anymore.

So, I live near by where all this is going on. There was a steady stream of small explosions. I couldn't see the flames from here but you can hear it every time there is an explosion. We need to start thinking about how we can move towards a majority of our power needs coming from renewables and not from fossil fuels.

Amos Quito: Blue Rhino has been steadily reducing the amount of propane that it puts in these tanks for years: They're down to 15 lbs now - 25% below capacity, because they know consumers are suckers who don't check the label and pay the price.

Guess I don't feel so bad now about trading my newish 'old' tank that had a valve like the top of the picture for a blue rhino with a valve like the bottom half, the year they started requiring the latter for refilling

I honestly believe nuclear power is the future.

But things like this are constant reminders that we are not ready yet.

With management enthusiastically demanding greater profit and production, knowing the only way to get that is cutting corners and flouting OHS laws, and taking comfort in knowing someone lower down the chain will give the order, because your only input was "I don't care how you do it, just deliver results!"... we simply cannot give this generation nuclear power plants.  Bad things WILL happen.  Workers and civilians DIE CONSTANTLY at coal/oil/gas plants.  And we think if we give these same managers a nuclear plant, they will suddenly change their ways and say "Okay, THIS time, no cutting corners"?

If the fire is from structures and other materials burning, yes put it out.  If the fire is from a damaged tank venting gas, protect the exposures and let it burn itself out.  Last thing you need is to put out the fire coming from the tank and then have the atmosphere full of a very explosive mix of fuel and air.

So we've been watching WESH circle the plant since about 12:30am off and on. There are several areas of concern:

A) trailers full of the "caged" propane bottles you see when Blue Rhino delivers loads or picks up. Okay, I would expect to see that.

B) Numerous Large tanks presumably full for refillng the later, then what looks like the retail cages you'd see outside a Walmart or local area reseller, seemingly full of  propane, or not I really don't know, but you'd have to assume even "empty" bottles are full of volatile vapers...

C) REALLY HUGE FIELDS OF WHAT LOOK LIKE PILES AND PILES OF DISCARDED PROPANE CANISTERS

Somebody with propane bottle recycling experience please tell me somehow that C) is a debris field from the earlier explosion, and day to day operations don't just leave massive dump piles of used propane bottles around like that?

Somebody with propane bottle recycling experience please tell me somehow that C) is a debris field from the earlier explosion, and day to day operations don't just leave massive dump piles of used propane bottles around like that?

I like the part of the news where they tell us all about how AAA is trying something new giving discounts at lots of florida recreational parks.  Mmm, informative.
Marketing will end us all.

I just used blue rhino for the first time just last week, now this.  I had nothing to do with it of course, I mean, sure it sounds more suspicious that I feel I have to say so since you probably didn't consider it before I said something but look, don't be paranoid I just wanted some gas for my grill and did an exchange instead of getting it filled at the local gas station this time, it's just a coincidence.

Hope everyone comes through okay.

What? Spend money on safety gear and procedures?

HELL NO!

We've got shareholders who need their dividends
and politicians who need campaign contributions.
and of course, those ads telling everyone how environmentally responsible we are aren't cheap.

Or a bacon factory. Best smelling fire ever.

Exactly.  Every pig farmer should be required to have a propane factory.  Road Warrior 3 knew this.

Blue Rhino a FL company, eh? Who would've guessed. They stand front and center in the ranks of corporate ass-whores (along with their partners in the criminal destruction of America like Home Depot) coring out another American tradition.

I love when people talk about how they "grill out" with their gas burning Chicom-made piece of insta-rust. Do you assbags really trust the Chicom to make you a grill that isn't loaded with heavy metal? What evidence do you have that you aren't cooking up kosher cancer for your kids on that faux stainless abomination you are so proud of? Maybe the heavy metals are where you get your flavor, because it sure isn't from a blue flame.

Amos Quito: Bathia_Mapes: ThatDarkFellow: Why did the trucks explode? Was this intentional or am I missing a part of the story?

From what they're saying on the live feed is that the semis near the plant were full of empty propane tanks, the kind you use with a propane barbeque, but that there's enough residue inside each one of them to make them explosive. One of the things the plant does is fill those propane tanks.

When we used a propane grill we were fortunate enough to buy one that came with the bottle and never exchanged it just took it down the street to our local place and they filled it. Fortunate enough I came across another tank to have as a backup. We still have the tanks but ditched our grill and went with a charcoal grill. At one time I worked at a C-store that refilled bottles whether it be the small ones or the big ones someone had rigged up in their pickup for a fuel source. At that time they had just started requiring all bottles to have the OPV. If it didn't have it no fill unless they took it to a certified dealer and got the valve replaced. And when I filled the bottles I never skimped on the propane. If you brought in a tank, I hooked up the line and filled it until the OPV kicked in. Good thing about that you couldn't over fill them and the customers would ask for me when I was working because the other workers would set the bottles on a scale and cut off the gas long before it got full.

/Took one time for me to learn to have my gloves on when I went to disconnect the line. Worse than those little bottles of butane you use to refill a lighter.

In most nuclear plants quality assurance answers directly to the member of the board of directors who is in charge of quality operations, and has an independent budget.  They have the option to shut the whole plant down with no countermanding orders from local or site management, and have a robust whistle blower protection system backed by the extremely powerful NRC.  A squeeky wheel won't just get the grease if they complain to regulators.  If they have cause that company's livelihood will basically be destroyed if they're invested in Nuke.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Bathia_Mapes: bluorangefyre: Let's see... fifty-three thousand tanks at twenty pounds each... wow.  BUT there's no idea what percentage of that were filled or empty.

But still, all that LP is like one, maybe two Saturn V rockets blowing up.

Going by what what the live feed said earlier even the empty ones are dangerous because there's still propane residue in them.

Yep... that's it

/it's the expanding left-over vapor that makes them blow from over-pressure
//then the vapor ignites for a good visual effect
///vapour, for our Canukistani friends

There's a pressure release valve. The failure comes when the flames touch a part of the tank that's above the level of the liquified gas, which then fails because heat makes metal malleable. It's the same principle as boiling water in a plastic soda bottle. Any part of the plastic which touches the liquid can conduct enough heat into the liquid to maintain structural integrity. When you remove the liquid it just melts. When it's metal containing pressurized propane vapor, it explodes. Brilliantly.

Never exchange propane tanks. Go to a place that fills them properly, by unscrewing the screw on the side of the valve until it starts "spitting". Filling until the OPD shuts off, is not the proper way to do it.
