A night shift crew was working, and many people are thought to have been killed, said Lt. John Herrell, a Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Crap.

One-mile evacuation zone ordered around Florida gas plant explosion; multiple injuries reported

This was almost me a few weeks ago. We had one (of 24) Silane exhaust lines go.  Shook the whole damn building.  If the main Silane store had gone, it would have blown us all to hell.

I'm watching this right now and semis full of propane tanks are going up left and right.

Firefighters can't even get in there yet to try to fight the fires.

2013-07-30 12:30:00 AM
Cripes. Another semi just went up.

2013-07-30 12:32:54 AM
Jeez - individual tanks are launching. 5 rigs have gone up and are maybe 100ft from what looks like three
large propane storage tanks.

5 gallon grill tanks are dancing like those ground flower fireworks

/if I were a firefighter, I wouldn't go near that

2013-07-30 12:41:27 AM
It's getting worse.

2013-07-30 12:42:18 AM
There are what looks like 4 large storage tanks - a row of 3 on one side and then a single one
at a right angle to the the row of three - scarily close to the major blaze.

2013-07-30 12:42:38 AM
Well, this is not good.

Why did the trucks explode? Was this intentional or am I missing a part of the story?

They were loaded down with filled 5 gal. propane tanks. Wherever the fire initially started, it got to the
trucks and that's all she wrote. I'm just hoping that the fire stays away from the larger storage tanks.

All fireworks are deadly, the only question is HOW deadly ;)

This is not a repeat from 1917 Halifax.

I going to go with they were tanker trucks filled with propane and they were in a place that was on fire.

2013-07-30 12:50:44 AM
It looks like a smaller tank is burning right in front of one of the larger tanks...Eesh...

As opposed to the DMX tag which was last seen stopping, dropping, shutting em down, and opening up shop.

The stories I see to the right of the live link are about a dead baby found in the garbage and puppy killings. Yeesh.

ThatDarkFellow: Why did the trucks explode? Was this intentional or am I missing a part of the story?

From what they're saying on the live feed is that the semis near the plant were full of empty propane tanks, the kind you use with a propane barbeque, but that there's enough residue inside each one of them to make them explosive. One of the things the plant does is fill those propane tanks.

Good to see some lessons from West, TX being applied so quickly, that firefighters are keeping defensive positions and only moving in so far as they are certain they can get pulled back out. Hopefully casualties can still be kept to a minimum.
