(Slate)   People are upset that critics are calling a new documentary about pregnant women narcissistic. To be fair, it is all about them   (slate.com ) divider line

The radiant child creates his own world, he summons people, brings them to him, humbles them.

She gave birth to The Iron Sheik?

"The review seemed to contain just the blend of tight-lipped moral disapprobrium, of simmering resentment toward the artist that usually signals something intriguing or alive "

That's one thing some intellectuals and teenagers have in common, the belief that being subject to negativity equals greatness.

I didn't know that there was a bias against "narcissistic" pregnant women.

I don't have kids yet, but why do I think that the people calling this woman narcissistic are childless?

No no no no no.  THE most selfish, arrogant and horrible people in existence are the mothers of small children.

I have a bias against a woman with no ability to provide for herself who deliberately gets pregnant as goddamned performance art.  She is both bourgeois self-indulgent.  Being a poor single mother is, in the eyes of the public, pitiable: poor judgment on the woman's part, cowardly betrayal by the father, and the poor mother being bound by fate, guilty, & religious mores, forced to bring this child into the world.

This woman makes a mockery of that.  This stupid documentary sounds like the girl from the song "Common People" decided that living like the common people needed an extra step: completely farking up your life.  Except she DIDN'T fark up her life - and that's why it's insulting.  That's why this whole thing is offensive.

Since one of the people quoted is the pregnant woman's dad, no. Actually, the people more likely to call a single-by-choice pregnant woman narcissistic tend to be older and have already have children. Maybe this is because having children seems less romantic after one has had children, or maybe because they know how difficult it is to have kids even when there is backup.

From TFA:

"The idea that Davenport is vain is particularly absurd, as this film, if anything, goes almost too far in showing her in an unflattering light, both physically and otherwise. Davenport is not afraid of showing herself, for instance, at the breast pump, one of the least attractive stances of a woman of all time..."

The writer is ignorant of (or chooses to ignore) the reality that modern vanity is not about hiding the embarrassing from view, but is characterized by the idea that others should be so enraptured by your every waking moment that even the most unattractive parts of our lives should be endlessly interesting (OK, poop is coming out...)

Anyway, this article is awful from start to finish. Not surprisingly...from what I've seen of the writer previously, it's just about par for the course.

One of my friends got pregnant by a man she had no intention of staying with so that she would "have someone who loved her". That ranks as the most narcissistic b.s. ever for me. I stopped talking to her not long after, because I had no intention of letting her use me to babysit her child while she got drunk.

Having children is already profoundly narcissistic. Embodying the notion that a world of ~7 billion people could really use one more of you. Making a documentary of it can only worsen the situation.

2013-07-30 11:24:46 AM
The article points out that the woman concedes that being surrounded by doctors and nurses while in labor is the most attention she'll have for the rest of her life.  Specifically, in this woman's case, she SEEMS to be OK - the story is more about challenging traditional values.  She is inseminated using a gay friend-donor's sperm.  I don't have a problem as long as
1. she doesn't assume I owe her something because she's pregnant or now because she has a small child, and
2. doesn't turn the kid into a little monster

But generally speaking, yes, the 30-something and 40-something microportion of women who think society owes them something simply because they're pregnant or with a small child (or want a better job with higher wages or whatever they're on about these days) are just awful.  Just like the microportion of other genders/orientations and age groups who have a false sense of entitlement.

Ironically, this almost ensure her kid will end up hating her.

Because you want to hate on childfree people for some narcissistic reason?

/I think the narcissistic part is less about her being single and more about her thinking anybody gives a shiat about her pregnancy story

While pregnancy and narcissism are very well acquainted, I can forgive pregnant mothers for that. Being narcissistic concerning themselves and their unborn children is a biological, animalistic, and ultimately unconscious response. It's not their fault, they can't help it.

The My Little Pony Killer: /I think the narcissistic part is less about her being single and more about her thinking anybody gives a shiat about her pregnancy story

I completely agree with this.  No one gives a shiat that I popped out two kids or how I did it, I'm not going to go advertising it.  And I'm certainly not going to give "advice", because I don't know what the hell I'm doing anymore than anyone else is...you make it up as you go along.  I don't expect my kids to be perfect...my son is in speech therapy right now because he's delayed, and my daughter...well, she's a typical 4 year old girl.  Neither are geniuses, and even if they were, it wouldn't be because of anything I did.  I can't stand when other mothers try to tell young women or new mothers what they "should" be doing, because that's what creates the vaccines scares, or gluten-free trends...and personally, I can't think of a better way to make your kid psychotic than to force crap on them because you "heard" about it.  And I don't drill my children on numbers, letters or anything else, because you know what?  They'll learn it when they are in school.  Why waste what little time they have before school on something they'll learn anyway?
