If you report that two trains have collided head-on, is it really necessary to clarify that "...the trains collided on the same track after travelling towards each other ..." ?

How the fcuck else are trains going to hit head-on?

I guess two adjacent sets of rails with trains the wrong width / wobbling enough to strike each other while in motion?

Bynes is in a category all to herself. Think of the Calvin and Hobbes plane crash + train crash + house gas leak.

WTF is going on with public transportation? Between trains and buses over the weekend I think I would hitchhike with a random stranger if I needed to go somewhere and my car was broken.

I think trains are just trying to take the heat off Boeing.

Looks like one of the passenger cars was fouled over the switch and the other train hit it after approaching thinking they were going to take the switch around. By the time they realized the switch wasn't cleared it was too late. Happened a few times at my old office where we had a 400 car rail yard outside our door.

switzerland?  i bet they collided on time at least

I thought that Europe's magic railways never had anything like this happen...

/ you'd think you'd always have at least 2 sets of rails; one always going one way, the other always going the other way and possibly a third for freight

Transportation deaths are the number one cause of death in the US for kids under 15.  Drownings are close behind.

If you've never been a journalist, then you don't know that those details have be expressed so that the lowest common denominator can get the picture.

iheartscotch: / you'd think you'd always have at least 2 sets of rails; one always going one way, the other always going the other way and possibly a third for freight

For low usage areas that will (roughly) double the track maintenance costs, which are a fair chunk of the cost of running a railway. Single track isn't that uncommon, and usually works. Railways do have those novel "signal" things that can tell the driver not to drive their train onto a section of track if another train is on it.

/ Having two tracks on its own isn't much of a protection against crashes, you could get something like the Harrow and Wealdstone crash where an express train ran into the back of a stationary commuter train picking up passengers.

yeah but those happen in a trickle and all the time so people are like "meh, whatever." Thousands can die due to DUI each year .. or month, but one plane crash and it's OMG DO SOMETHING OBUMMER. OCCUPY NEWS ROOMS.

In the small town I grew up in there was a local business that specialized in rail accident clean-up.  The mechanical portion only (they didn't do HAZMAT or anything).  The pic of the freight accident you posted reminded me of this and would be a good example of the type of mess they'd walk in to.  It was like pickup sticks.  They'd crawl into the twisted pile of hundred ton rail cars with cutting torches and cranes and have to eye-ball the whole mess to try to figure out what sort of badness would happen if they cut this or that.  The older guys got really good at it (mostly because they lived through their past mistakes).  Anyway, you could make some pretty serious money working for them and every year at least one or two grads from the local HS did.  I don't believe I met anyone who worked for them more than 3 years that wasn't at a minimum missing one digit.  But hey, $70K in the late 80's was more than worth a finger or two.

How's that high speed rail that you're always bragging about working out for you, Europe?

And an amusing piece I saw the other day was that Brazil is looking to get a high speed train too, but China was ruled out because they eliminated any company that has had an accident in the last 5 years.   I wonder how many companies they have left to choose from now.

Heh, the globalist types keep trying to push it in Texas, and it's actually in all the major cities now slowing down traffic, costing assloads of tax dollars, and carrying 2 or 3 people per car. In Austin, TX, they actually have the windows tinted so you can't see the 2 or 3 people per car.
