(CNN)   Amazon is hiring 7000 warehouse workers. And it's paying them much more than the average wage. And it's guaranteeing them full-time work and permanent positions. And it's offering tuition reimbursement and health care. And..wait, is this is a dream?   (money.cnn.com) divider line 151

Why does Amazon hate America?

True patriots pay their help 'competetive wages' (read: as low as legally possible while still filling the positions) without benefits in order to maximize profit and make Wall Street happy.  How else are we supposed to force Americans to lick their bootstraps er, um, raise themselves up from poverty?

They're opening a similar facility in Florida.

Governor Luthor rejected it (initially).

After all the hubbub between Amazon and NC Dept. of Revenue I doubt they'll be opening a plant here. That the whole Our State Has Not Been Looking Appealing To Companies thingy that's been going on recently.

Here he initially rejected it because he didn't want to force Floridians to pay sales tax on purchases.

And as with almost every single dumbass thing he's done, he quickly reversed position when everyone, including his fellow FL Republicans said, "WTF is this shiat, Rick?"

I could have sworn I read an article once describing Amazon warehouses as the worst kind of hell.

Wow. It's oppositeland here. They went after Amazon not only wanting to get the sales taxes from anyone in the state buying something from them, they also wanted a list of who bought stuff from Amazon and what the people were buying. The ACLU jumped in on that one...

Maybe it is, but they need smart, loyal employees who will stick around after getting trained. One way to do that is to pay them more.

I'll have to exercise my Amazon Prime account even more after this.

This is how ethical corporations should operate.

I'm not trying to shiat on them if they really are going to do something right.  Just curious based on what else I've read.

It only going to get worse is the sad part which the emphasis by the state government to dismantle the state education system, the total interest in new infrastructure and technology, so they can let in a few vulture buddies to pick over the bones. Short term gains at the cost of future, a few nutjob dominists, and petty revenge for voting for the wrong guy in 2008 is pulling NC apart.

You did, I read more than one. I recall Amazon warehouses locked their employees inside, and didn't have proper ventilation or cooling for employees to work safely. I believe lack of hydration was a huge factor. They dropped like flies from the heat and their long work hours.

xynix: So when Best Buy finally shuts it's doors they'll have somewhere to work eh? EH?

If Best Buy wasn't such a raging shiatpile, I'd still be going to their store to buy cds instead of buying mp3s from Amazon.  Amazon's policy on digital media is fantastic.  Best Buy may still exist selling computers, tvs, and appliances in the future, but other smaller electronics they may not have much of a market.

This article makes me feel pretty good about renewing my Prime membership.  Prime rules.

Yeah, Except -  Most 'retail' jobs, while requiring standing, doesn't require the daily running, lifting, wrapping, packing, and moving things that a warehouse worker does.

So yeah, higher wages compared to light work that snotty slender easternEuropean biatches can do.
But not so good compared to what Most Large middle-aged men do.

Not a dream, Amazon employees work fraking hard and they have found they need to pay above grade to attract good employees. I don't envy those warehouse workers, because they will be on the move constantly and be expected to meet a piece count that guarantees 2 out of 3 will quit in the first six weeks. Yeah, hard manual labor still pays well.

The warehouse workers hardly move. They literally stay in one place as the shelves bring the packages to them.

Why would anyone work a physically demanding & somewhat dangerous warehouse job when they could just become a tradesman in the oil or mining industry & enjoy $38/hour+overtime wages after a few year apprenticeship is beyond me.

2013-07-29 11:00:57 AM
All I know is that everything I order from Amazon I get quickly and inexpensively.  DRTFA, but they must beat the tar out of their employees and have insane turnover.  I'd be willing to bet that by announcing 7,000 people, they will hire 7,000 people, and after a year will only retain around 1000 of them, mostly due to employees leaving voluntarily.

My Prime membership paid for itself pretty quickly, I'll definitely be renewing when the time comes up. Especially since it's much better to just order online and wait 2 days than to drive 40 minutes one direction if I want to buy something that I cant get in town.

Amazon warehouse jobs are actually pretty brutal. Some people end up walking >10 miles  a day around the warehouses. They have a system that's shocking in its push for efficiency, that tracks workers for every step they take and demands quicker and quicker runs.

I'm not saying that having a warehouse open and create jobs is a bad thing, it's just that Amazon has a  long history of creating jobs that are incredibly taxing on the workers, and also on making outsized promises about the jobs they're offering to a community and then reneging on them and hiring a  far higher number of part-timers or out-of-towners than they initially promised.

Maybe when all things are factored in, like turnover, productivity, and shrinkage, it does maximize profits to get the type of employees raising pay will attract.
