Risking your life to steal the contents of a cash register?
A diner isn't exactly bank of America.

A:  The night shift at the Alpharetta Waffle House.

Why the hell would you rob a Waffle House?  There's about $8 in the register and at least half the people are armed, mentally disturbed, or both.  You could probably get more money robbing a Goodwill.

This story made me happy.

That customer should be locked up for life.  The victim was only trying to feed his family.  He was only using the gun to scare the staff.  He wasn't even pointing it at the shooter so he couldn't have been in fear for his life.  This is why concealed carry, castle doctrine, and stand your ground should be revoked.  What is someone doing going to a Waffle House armed to the teeth?  Was he looking for trouble?  He was just praying for the chance to play Dirty Harry.  These irresponsible gun nuts are causing more people to get hurt unnecessarily.

Amidoinitrite?

Unfortunately, some people actually believe this.

I met the owner or CEO or whatever his damn title is of Waffle House once, he was a kind and gentle man. He explained that those jellies and whatnot that they litter the plates with are put in exact combinations of location so as to instruct to the chef what the customer ordered from the many variations. Like a red jelly at six o'clock is smothered and covered, whereas at nine o'clock it's just smothered, stuff like that.
He started doing this back in the day so he could employ chefs that can't read, I guess he still does as they still do it. It's a lot to remember but it works.
He also said there's a secret menu, if you ask for 'splooged on' the chef splooges on your food. That's real popular in Memphis.

Caps, commas. How do they work?

You would be surprised. The WH manager near here usually deposits two to four thousand in cash every day.

First, some of those folks are just doing what they can to get by, so have some heart for the employees,

Second, if you are trying to rob a Waffle House, that's not only desperate but stupid.  I doubt they had enough cash on premesis to make any sort of robbery attempt worth the jail time

I don't see what the problem is.  Attempted robbery, and the problem was taken care of.

Yeah but he/she probably deposits it on his/her way home from the day shift so the overnight shift probably hasn't got much on them. I would also assume that 24 hour establishments almost always have a drop safe that the employees cannot open.

The guy should've waited for the waffle houses that are used by dragoncon goers.  Those are always busy.

As for the rest of them.  I know a guy who used to be a roving troubleshooting manager. His duty wasn't to increase profit so much as it was to increase the waffle house to where they were toeing the line between shutting down and making money.  The chain has too many restaurants, and most of them should have shut down by now.

They only recently started accepting credit cards. Before that they had tons of cash on hand, probably one of the most cash heavy businesses. But, police, truckers, lowlifes, and drunks are usually there, so the robber is taking chances.

I just picked Alpharetta because I had to travel there extensively when we (AT&T) split off Lucent and I had to clone all our financial apps for the new entity.

No amount of money is worth the attempt if you get caught. Any amount of money is worth the attempt if you don't get caught.

He did not expect this outcome.

Which means that the criminal made a poor risk-benefit calculation. I'm pretty sure that was the point of the various comments like the one you quoted from blugenes. The probable expected return (probably less than $100.00) was not worth the expected risk (getting arrested or shot to pieces by cops/armed citizens). How much money would it take for you to be willing to hold up a restaurant- or anyplace else, for that matter? I'm fairly certain that number would be vastly more than a C-note.

Most criminals have a history of making poor decisions. If criminals were capable of better risk-benefit calculations, they probably wouldn't have become criminals (or might have become much more successful criminals). Consider the imbecile who tried to rob a gun store with a baseball bat posted on FARK over the weekend.  That was a clear-cut case of a cunning plan not getting though all the way through.

In my case there is no point that would make it worth it. I have bought in completely to the attempt at doing the right thing for the right reason. I get honest when I get too much change back.

I just feel that the thief was placing a higher value on the likelihood of a successful robbery than the amount of the potential haul. He just miscalculated the variables.

I have no sympathy for him or anything.

I see your point. I was thinking of it as being along the same lines of parking a crashed car in front of the high school before prom or a hunting safety video. It's one thing to warn people, but pictures really do speak a thousand words. It doesn't have to be over-the-top graphic, either. I am the last person who would want to turn someone who needs a gun off of the idea of owning one, but timidness doesn't really go hand-in-hand with defending yourself, with a gun or otherwise.

Thing is, We can fix temerity.
It's the non-violent who most often need guns. Weapons are an equalizer against violent people.
Those who act lightheartedly around a Weapon are the most dangerous and, yes, a bit of shock factor may help in these particular cases.

My favorite prop is a makarov that kb'd when someone stuffed 9mm Luger in there.
One of our instructors put the blood spattered fragments inside a case and passes it around his classes.

People might get off on the idea of what a gun can do to the victim.
Not so much on what a gun can do to a careless operator.
