well, those name you mentioned certainly fit the bit for having inner turmoil to go along with their genius.

The theory is rather obvious... Art is used as an escape... Those who have the most to escape from, end up being the best artists.


well, as the director tarkovsky said (and I'm grossly paraphrasing), there is always a struggle to create art.  if there was no struggle, there would be no need for art.  if the world were a paradise, no one would have anything to strive for, there would be no reason for art.

/ i wouldn't call art an escape though.  most stuff that's an escape is just entertainment.  like cheesy movies and video games.
