Isn't complaining about online abuse like fussing about getting dirty looks at the Country Club?

I'd rather see 40,000 signatures on a petition to remove those farking paid advertisements on everyone's feeds. I'm sick of seeing ads for some Nebraska DUI attorney, etc. They're not even targeted based on who you follow or what hashtags you have used recently.

But HWA, that would be private-sector espionage! There's no telling what a CorpoRapetion might do with your voluntarily publicized information!

How is removing annoying ads private-sector espionage? They could at least offer a paid version of Twitter with no ads. Charge people $2/month to not be spammed. Sure, that would be along the same lines as old school mafia protection rackets, but they would make money and stop pissing people off so much.

"The response from Twitter being that, 'Oh well, look, there's this form that you can fill out', that's a really time-consuming process," she said.

Of course it is, in a world where the word troll had come to mean anyone who says something you don't like, they have to make it difficult or else everyone will be reporting every tweet that they don't agree with or pisses them off. Even with the long process I'd be willing to bet that 98% of their abuse reports are petty bullshiat.

Meh, sometimes people ask for that abuse.

If Twitter is simply a communications facilitator, like the post office or a telephone provider, why is content in any way its concern?  Wouldn't abuse be an issue for law-enforcement agencies?

I think that should be Twitter's public response to this, and they should hire you to run the PR campaign.
I say this because I loathe Twitter, and would like to see it wiped out.

Did they hold her down and smack her in the face with an iPad?

/what's that, Nancy?  Did someone say something mean on the internet?  By all means, don't log off and forget about it, call the waaambulance.

I'll take that job, and I'll do it for free.  My first act as PR manager would be to hire all the Fark trolls to personally respond to each complaint.  We'd surely have a rash of twitter-induced suicides in short order.

I'm pretty sure Big-Brother is monitoring social media, that and "concerned citizens" likely drop a dime when some idiot makes a threat.

Are you telling me people would leave twitter because of rational responses from their PR department?

If everytime you went to the beach and someone kicked sand in your face would your response be to "not go to the beach"?

"Caroline Criado-Perez received hostile posts, including threats to rape and kill her, nearly every minute in the 48 hours after she attended the Bank of England's unveiling of the new £10 note, with Jane Austen's image on, on Wednesday. "

This behaviour that should just be ignored?

If the media and associated 'concerned politicians' are to be believed about the frequency of teen suicide due to online bullying this issue will be self correcting. Soon the only people who make it to breeding age will be the ones capable of withstanding some name calling.

Yes it would be best to ignore insults this would render said insult powerless.

Threats are illegal.

I agree, insults can be ignored, death threats not so much.

Anyhow, the police have arrested a 21 year old, no names or picture yet but I'm going with fat, spotty and short.

No, it would be like admission to a theme park.

If there were a functional "kill this person" button on Twitter, millions would die before we could stop the carnage.

On Fark I learned that violence doesn't necessarily require force or even a voluntary act.  Violence can be just a convergence of conditions.

I find twitter to be of too limited character to do more than joke about it.
