Hah! That'll teach that dirty criminal a lesson. It's a good thing we're a nation that's "Tough on Crime", otherwise this miscreant might have gone on to do something truly horrible. Like, go to the hospital and recover.

Thank God one of our stellar, for-profit, private prison companies was there to keep this horrible criminal away from the rest of society.

Given Florida is one big elephant's graveyard I'm amazed farmer's markets aren't on WHOs near extinction list.

Yet there are still people that feel betrayed because they believe that prisoners enjoy for free, luxuries that they can barely afford themselves.

Free education?
Not in New York State. In fact even prison libraries have long since been defunded.
They offer GED tutoring, and little more.
Nobody has ever held up a liquor store with it in mind that even the worst case scenario would result in a masters degree.

Free health care?
Yeah, sure thing.
Read the article.
In reality, (not TV or the movies) if you get sick, or get hurt in jail, you're on your own with very limited resources, and will probably die.

Cable TV, and HBO?
That fantasy land you live in, are there rides? Fried dough vendors?

But hey, there's free food (that you wouldn't eat on a dare) though!

Free bed too, as long as you don't mind sitting on a cold steel toilet in the middle of the night, or enduring one of your 3 cellmates' diarrhea attack 4 feet away from your head as you are trying to sleep.

I used to deliver car parts for a certain international conglomerate with lots of 'local' stores in small towns (and a shield logo). My former boss apparently had his stroke while in the building; lucky for everyone he wasn't out making a delivery at the time. While I know that a stroke is SRS BSNS, his recovery showed me that we've come miles in terms of therapy for such afflictions.

When he retires or kicks it while on the job [he's that kind of guy], that particular store will probably go out of business...

I wasn't aware "To Protect and Serve" was the motto of the healthcare profession, since this article is about a Health Dept. Speaking of healthcare, have you considered a dopamine agonist for your Restless Leg Syndrome?  It must be Hell having your knee jerk like that all the time.

Every single healthcare employee of that prison involved with his care should be fired and permanently barred from working in healthcare again. Shi-it, I've only taken a year of A&P and I could diagnose that severe of a stroke! Sad to see the family only got a mil combined, they deserve to see the prison closed and people's heads on pikes presented to them. The DoH doesn't have jurisdiction there? LOLOL , whut?

Before it became fatal? I had a stroke last year. On my birthday. Had I not went to the ER when I did, I'd have had a fatal one.

hardinparamedic: Ah. Driving while black. A common crime in Florida.

More like being anywhere near a car while black.  This lucky fellow was just shot in his own driveway.  Unarmed, 60 years old, looking for a smoke in his mother's car.  Neighbors freak out and call 911, deputies show up and start shooting after he backs away from the car with his hands up.

Most strokes are not fatal.
However, if you don't treat them for 36 hours, they become fatal.
The fact that he made it 36 hours seems to dictate that he might have been just fine, had he had immediate medical attention.

Don't say they are not tough on cops that misbehave.

For instance a woman had nude pics of herself on her work machine.  Why, who knows, but she lost her job because that was against policy.

Some cop that nearly pulled over the state gov in Iowa, he was a problem child and was fired shortly after the incident for unrelated disciple issues.

/There are plenty of ways a cop can loose his job, it just has nothing to do with how a cops treats 'civilians'.

//Don't worry about the lawsuit, the taxpayers will pick up that bill.

I think a stroke is usually because of lack of blood, a blood clot, or a vessel pops and bleeds onto the brain. If the guy was acting funny but otherwise acting reasonably ok, probably would have been ok.

Hicks, 51, was arrested in May 2012 after veering off Interstate 275 in Tampa. He was booked into jail without a medical screening, rambling incoherently and dragging his left leg.

No mention of drugs found either, just a traffic accident.

This country makes me sad sometimes.

Because we're Florida, fark you! That's why.

Apparently there was a lawsuit, but of course, the terms of the settlement effectively silenced the victim's family from ever speaking about the incident.

"Under the settlement terms, Hicks' children and their attorneys cannot discuss the circumstances of his death".

www.tampabay.com/news/courts/civil/inmates-untreated-fatal-stroke-re su lts-in-1-million-settlement-by/2130278

I am guessing that there will be slaps on the wrist all around, perhaps a procedure or two changed, but not a single person does a day in jail for this criminal negligence. :(

Well maybe we just have the most zealous police force in the world, Mr. Smartypants. Did you ever think of that? I mean, we all know that the Czech republic and Poland are just crawling with criminals, hell - probably the only innocent people in those countries are the ones in jail.

In short, U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S.A!

2013-07-29 02:47:26 AM
Strokes are kinda one of those time sensitive medical conditions.  A hemmorhagic stroke (aka bleeding into your brain) needs to be immediately ruled out with a head CT in case you need neurosurgery, and an ischemic stroke (aka blood clot) only has so many hours before the doctor can only treat the symptoms and hope it resolves itself.  Given the severity of his symptoms (AMS and left-sided weakness), you can't really give even the cops the benefit of the doubt much less the medical staff.

/not a doctor
//helped work up plenty of stroke patients though
