I thought the last one was going to be a close 1-0 game; but since I failed on that prediction, I'll go with this being a close 1-0 game.

Final score 23-19. I have a sports almanac from 2019 that I picked up from this weird dude named Marty, he assures me it's legit.

Please, that almanac had the Cubs winning the world series. It was obviously a joke book or some sort of alternative history novel.

Is Soldier Field actually in playing shape? Or is the November/December field the Bears play on the norm there?

2013-07-28 03:21:26 PM
I'm gonna say either 2-1 or 3-1 after extra time.

I'd bet it's in good shape today. Ground isn't frozen out there yet.

Let's see how well we can defend a team with decent set pieces.

Poor Klinsmann. Crock o' shiate that is, for sure.

According to Grant Wahl it's in pretty good shape.

WOO!! Can't wait. So with Klinsmann out, who's calling subs and formation changes and such?

VTGremlin: Poor Klinsmann. Crock o' shiate that is, for sure.

Klinsmann: Can't be on bench or in locker room, no radio communication with bench. No specific provision against cell-phone communication. Martín Vásquez and Andreas Herzog will be co-head coaches on sideline during Gold Cup final.

USA: Rimando; Parkhurst, Goodson, Besler, Beasley; Beckerman, Holden; Bedoya, Donovan, Corona; E. Johnson.

Let's go Panama!

I love all the "It's a conspiracy! Klinsmann was set up to get thrown out because they're afraid of the US WINNING! MURIKA" bullcrap. Americans are too used to watching baseball when the coaches are expected to make a scene....

2013-07-28 03:46:24 PM
My Irish roommate Ralph is also watching. He's a purist who doesn't go for things like "stats" and "analysis". "They didn't use to have this 'He's good down the right side' and 'How will they play against a defense?" and all that shiat. Used to be 'Ay, it's a game of two halves' and 'He's a big farker, don't wanna get tackled by him.' "

2013-07-28 03:47:16 PM
Not happy with the Klinsmann decision, but I'm sure his second in commands are up to it.  2-1 US, cause Panamas not gonna roll over.

I don't think "it's a conspiracy", but it's most assuredly bullcrap. Any sort of review process after the game would be able to clearly see that he was pissed because his players were getting mugged far more frequently than the calls were coming out. He was just sticking up for his boys.

And? That doesn't mean you spike the ball and curse out the ref. That's not how the game works.

Pentaxian: no radio communication with bench. No specific provision against cell-phone communication.

Cell phones use radio.

Of course, since this is a soccer match being played in the USA, he could just yell from the otherwise empty stands.  Or use those big signs some college football teams use to send in plays.

/I kid - I'm sure that the second smallest NFL stadium will be pretty full.

I don't buy that. The sending off seemed a bit harsh, but it happens. Klinsmann is a fantastic coach, now to see if the rest of the coaching staff can step up.

Has he ever tried to watch basketball, football, or heaven forfend, baseball? Reading articles on baseball is probably the most I have to use my math degree these days.

During pregame show, Fox commentators said no electronic communication, I think.

That would rock, but I suspect he's somewhere he can get notes passed to the bench (or giving "suggestions" to someone who will relay it).

Entering this match, Donovan, Wondo, and G. Torres are all tied for the Golden Boot at 5 goals. Donovan's got a farkton of assists, so he'd take the Boot if none of those three score.

In the entire history of international soccer, there has never been good singer/soccer player. The closest are some of the Italians, b/c that national anthem is catchy as hell.

Last time I'll tell this cool story bro.

2005 Gold Cup final, Giants Stadium. I live 20 minute away, so I decide on a whim to go and watch the game. I wound up behind one of the goals, in a section completely filled with Panama fans. The game was fairly lackluster, scoreless after full time and still scoreless after extra time. Some guy a few rows in front of me, waving an enormous Panama flag sees me cheering for USA and says "We win 5-1. You kiss this flag after we win." USA won the shootout 3-1 and I got the fark out of there before any riots started.
