When subby stops using all products that include petroleum, I will be happy to listen to his or her opinion on how the oil industry needs to be destroyed.  Until that time, STFU, you farking hypocrite.

But we should totally let them put a big pipeline right over a massive aquifer so they can sell oil to China!

It's communism.

If you didn't mean to support creating oil messes you should have chosen to buy your fuel from a company that doesn't cause them. That is how the invisible hand of the free market works, consumers making informed choices about their money making a better world for everyone with less inefficient government interference. Man, it's simple stuff, basic economics. Try reading some Ayn Rand.

They're just a struggling Mom & Pop industry, trying to make it in this crazy world.  Maybe WE should give THEM money, in order to help them get over the stress that the spill may have caused.

This is pretty standard Republican thinking.

Ask to clean up an oil spill = Destroying the oil industry
Ask to clean up the air = Destroying the coal industry.
Ask to be tolerant of others = Destroying our freedoms.

When the oil industry's mouthpiece, the GOP, started up with their "damn job-killing regulations" nonsense a few years ago, I completely underestimated the powerful effect of that propaganda. It was unfiltered genius.

In my backyard here in Western Colorado, a new uranium mill was just approved for a Canadian company to construct. They held a public feedback meeting a few nights ago even though the project has already been approved. At the entrance to the forum, the energy company, Energy Fuels, had reps there passing out faux-homemade signs to all the rubes who showed up. Just a bunch of servile nitwits holding up astroturf propaganda without the slightest hesitation.

Unfortunately the people around Montrose are getting hit hard with the recession. We had a guy we used to work with in Nucla asking if he could come and work in the oil fields up north. Take note that this guy is a redneck USA USA, you are a commie Canadian liberal kind of guy. It must have been really hard for him to do that.

We've always trashed the environment because we have so much of it. We're like your redneck neighbour that has dozens of old rusted out cars on his property and you don't notice or care until he runs out of room out back and starts piling them in his front yard.

Our oil companies are assholes as well. The whole friendly Canadian thing isn't exactly universal. Some of my neighbours to the south may be shocked to learn this but we also have a lot of arseholes.

Why is it called a 'tar sands spill' -- its an oil spill.

People never refer to oil as being "Venezuelan Jungle Grease"
They dont refer to it as being "Arab Warzone Lube"

Why does it matter where the oil came from?

I was only being half sarcastic, but yeah.

Yes, the oil industry would be held to account for every farking drop they spill.  But the spills and the open mines are not by any means the whole story or even "the real story".  Come up and look for yourself before judging.  Meet with the oil people - really, they do meet with environmentalists all the time, and people do go away with their perceptions changed.  Talking to activists against the industry and "some guy who used to work there" is not exactly getting information from an unbiased source.

But seriously - we get ALOT of young pseudo-hippie wannabe activists who drive up here, alone, in their old, fuel-inefficient cars, looking to "take down the oil industry".  It gets hold pretty quickly.

Jesus f--king Christ, THIS.

I commuted to work by bus or bike for a year, and about half my commutes nowadays are non-solo-driving (quarter carpool, quarter bus/bike).  I've been working to figure out how to get community solar, but our Friendly Local Monopoly Utility isn't a fan.  I'm a Michigander and would like to keep this state and our goddamn water clean, and I've dedicated my career to doing so.

Do *I* get permission to criticize?

By the way,  way to kick ass and lead on this front, Bell's.

Otherwise known as "A  Michigan company producing jobs and revenue and delicious beer for and from OUR STATE, not a out of state company here to wreck our environment and then call it a f--king day, but under the guise of a few crappy jobs and some well placed donations so we're cool with leaving our mess, right?"

Dude... it's safe to drink.  If nothing else in Michigan, our municipal water supplies are pretty damn respectable.  Even in Detroit.  Well... not the financial scandals, but the quality *of* the water anyhow.

Keep buying and supporting, best thing you can do as an out of stater.

I knew this was on the horizon, but now I feel a touch guilty for buying Short's instead of Bell's tonight.  Oh well, what the hell, maybe I'll buy another 6 pack before the store closes, eh?

I've only seen it referred to as an "oil spill", honestly; however, I imagine the distinction is important because if there wasn't a need to move tar sands oil out of Canada it wouldn't be transported through Michigan in the first place.

Educated guess.  But I can tell you with certainty when I was biatching about the spill on Fark (probably on TFD, I think it got no f--king coverage on Fark, thanks moderators - too much burnout from the BP gulf spill?) the terminology was simply "oil spill".

Tar sands oil is extremely viscous, not at all like conventional oil and is almost impossible to clean up.

As someone living downstream from the Lac Mégantic train wreck, this is not good to hear, mostly because the train company will probably go bankrupt before it's all over (the clean-up bill they were supposed to pay is being paid by the city atm)

Tar sands "oil" isn't like crude pumped out of the ground in Texas or Pennsylvania or Saudi Arabia. It does not flow at room temperature. You have to either cut it with fairly caustic chemicals or heat it close to 200F to get it to flow. This stuff is nasty nasty gunk and it shouldn't be put down the pipes engineered for light sweet crude; it tears old equipment to shreds.

Canada kicked your ass the last time you tried it.  America's victory record in war, not counting Hollywood creations, is pretty much zip.  Both WW I and II were nearly over before you decided what side to support.  You really showed Viet Nam who wore the pants in the family.  Korea - tie game.  Last 10 years in the Middle East - thousands of Americans dead and not a drop of oil to show for it.  So if you want to try Canada on, big boy, bring it.  We'll kick your ass by noon and be having a double double at Timmy's by coffee time.

As for the spill, it's Michigan, America's septic tank.  Who would know if you had an oil spill in that dump?  You know what they call a atomic bomb going off in Detroit?  Urban renewal.

Shout out to the NSA grunts reading this.  Love you guys.  Really.

Wow, I hit a nerve with that joke.

You display perfectly the odd mixture of butthurt and sheltered bravado so common in your countrymen, fostered by decades and decades of living in the shadow and under the wing of a nation far stronger and more internationally important than you. Don't worry, we understand why you feel the way you do. Now, shut up, go back to consuming our culture and products, and enjoy the Pax Americana.
