(New York Daily News)   Thieves steal $53 million worth of jewels and diamonds from a five-star Cannes hotel. Subby thinks it's time we bring back Inspector Jacques Clouseau for this case. And why we're at it, bring back Cato too, just to keep him in line   (nydailynews.com) divider line 46

Oddly enough I tried to watch that movie for the first time about a month ago. Boring as hell. I watched through the chase scene on the water (Oh look, a beautiful woman driving a boat.... how...uh... whatever....) and turned it off.

Monsieur Guy Gadboi is still farking hilarious. Him and the bellboy trapped in the sauna and then sliding around on the floor kills me.

No need for Clouseau, here's what happened. The Israeli billionaire set it up, robbed himself i.e. his insurance company and the jewelry was all fake so the "thief" was able to dispose of it by dropping it in the ocean. Mr.Leviev gets to keep the real jewelry and gets a nice check and a nice tax loss.

As long as we're bringing people back to solve a jewel heist let's bring back these two.

$53 million retail >>> blackmarket value.

2013-07-28 04:10:06 PM
The hotel in the sweltering French Riviera was hosting a temporary jewelry exhibit over the summer from the prestigious Leviev diamond house, which is owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.

Clearly he didn't get rich by hiring security guards.

whither_apophis: $53 million retail >>> blackmarket value.

I bet it's more along the lines of $53 million insured. At MSRP. I've caught this fine print from a major retailer.

fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net

It's basically carte blanche to put whatever MSRP you want just so you can discount it and have the perceived value make the sale. "I got a thousand dollar necklace for $800, what a bargain" but it's only worth about $500 if you went to a straighter shop.

This heist is such weak sauce!  A guy just walks in with a gun.  That's not a jewel heist, that's a stick up.  Come on, where's the overly elaborate scheme to defeat the alarms?  Where's the plumbing vans that get switched at the last second so the police chase the wrong one?  Where's the nervous insider who has to be kidnapped because at the last second she panics and starts talking about going to the cops?

Banal execution, no originality.  I award 2 points on a 10 point scale.

Uhm...I guess. You'd need to train the rabbit to purr though. Otherwise it won't work.
