Corbin's story was featured earlier this month in the Toronto Sun. His burgeoning lemonade enterprise, which he sets up annually to raise money for Sick Kids, ran afoul of an unidentified female neighbour. That neighbour scolded him for shouting to passersby to advertise the stand, tried to buy him off with $5 and then called the police who tried to shut the stand down because the family didn't have a permit.

WTF?  Who the hell thinks this is an appropriate reaction to a kid's lemonade stand?  And why the fark didn't the police tell her to fark off - it's a civil offense, not a criminal one.

I hope to all deities that the rest of the neighborhood has shunned her - and that they start calling "authorities" on her for every tiny infraction - where she parks, how close her grill is to the house, when she walks her dog and whether she leaves a microgram of crap on the ground when she cleans up after it...

Probably someone that they police were over-zealous about enforcing the letter rather than the spirit of the law against? Someone who had a loved one sickened by the products of an unlicensed food vendor at some point? Someone who wants to enjoy their residentially zoned property - on which they pay taxes - in peace, without impromptu businesses generating additional traffic?

If you have a problem with an ordinance, get the ordinance changed.

I've had 3 windows shot out with pellet guns over a span 4 years, including large, expensive tempered glass ones. Code Enforcement looked at me like I was from Mars when I suggested that they enforce upon the pawn shop up the road the local ordinance that bars from public display such weapons. Since they actually acted (with much nudging), I've not had an incident.

Getting the local police to act on neighbors discharging such weapons within city limits (also illegal) has met with less success.

and the article also states that the restaurant limits his lemonade hours to 5pm-8pm

I'm guessing that the autistic kid has some kind of an annoyingly loud voice.

How long before the kid gets kicked out of the restaurant for being an intolerable noise making brat and the owner understands why the neighbor called the cops?

KID: Wanna buy some lemonade?
CUSTOMER: No, thank you.
KID: Why don't you wanna buy some lemonade?
CUSTOMER: Because I don't like lemonade.
KID: Why don't you like lemonade? Buy some. You'll like it.

We have a neighbour like that. The minute he retired he started phoning on the littlest things. Oddly he only phoned on brown people. These people weren't harming anyone and didn't even live on his street.

Then he'd call me to the fence and try to get me to phone all the while name dropping all the people he knows at city hall. He's just a bored old fark that needs a hobby.

Kids diagnosed with Autism express many attributes to the condition. One attribute is the in ability to stay focused.. ESPECIALLY when engaged socially. Hence, many autistic children will look for a reason to avoid contact with others. "Squirrel" is just a good enough reason as anything else.

But, if you are talking about the crudeness of the drawing... hey lady... you try Paint with a 3 inch touch pad and see how *you* do.

Okay I can see that but my kid who is autistic is always paying attention to everything.  And if he were running a stand you can bet he wouldn't have so much as a bug come near his product.  He is uncanny though at knowing when you are not paying attention to him.  This usually results in your phone getting all its icons moved around.  There are many reasons autistic people avoid contact with others.  Most though, accused of not being emotionally aware of others are actually quite capable of reading many unconscious body queues with experidance.  Coupled with nearly perfect recall they start to avoid situations due to memories of previous incidents.
Just like you would.

on the one hand, it's a kid raising money for charity. Adorable and worth stopping to buy/donate. However, there was no mention of how close to "unknown neighbor" this kid's stand was. If it was close enough, an overenthusiastic child screaming "LEMONADE LEMONADE BUY LEMONADE LEMONADE BUY BUY BUY LEMONADE HEY RED CAR YOU WANT LEMONADE! STOP FOR LEMONADE!!!" at every single car that went by would be incredibly irritating after a while. I would think a talk with the mom and a sizable donation to the kid's cause would be a much more reasonable reaction to such a situation though, not calling the cops!
