New Zealand, the Australia of the South...that doesn't want to kill you with everything.

I'm actually travelling to Australia and New Zealand later this year on vacation. Doing the South Island only as everybody else in New Zealand will be on vacation break at the same time.

Got any suggestions to what to see?

So...how the hell is it? You submitted this presumably, so post a response to the questions, you bloody wanker. :-)

Was only in Queensland for 10 days but would move in a heartbeat. Even though its Australia's Florida.

rooftop235: How is it?

I arrived just in time for a historic storm (southerly with sustained winds of 50-60mph, gusts of 80+), followed by a week of rain, followed by a week of earthquakes capped off by a big 6.5. Not fun, especially on the 7th floor.

The people have been very nice, and it's beautiful when the sun is out and you're not huddled under a table. If I had to sum up: New Zealand, Australia's Canada

Haven't made it to the South Island yet. Got a few years here, and I'd rather wait til it's warmer.

The immigration is pretty strict. Aside from student visas, the easiest way to get in is to be offered a job, preferably one for at least 2 years, as that's the cutoff for having access to social services. Second easiest is to have a lot of money, I think $1.5 million gets you in under some sort of "investor" visa. There's a point system. Points for having a job offer, bonus points if that job is something on their list of needed stuff, points for being younger, points for degree, points if your job isn't in Auckland. It wasn't too hard for me, because my employer is on their list of accredited employers and my job was on the essential skills list, but your mileage may vary.

Wellington > Aukland, but only in my opinion. Cool farkin' town, beautiful location. Aukland, to me, is missing some of that charm. Still a cool place to be though.

Wellington is gorgeous, when the weather is nice. Which it often isn't in the winter. They tell me summer is better. Most of the people in Wellington seem to not have high opinions of Auckland, characterizing it as all urban sprawl. Wellington is more like a southern hemisphere Vancouver (at least my impression of Vancouver, I haven't actually been there).

Also, a dread warning, should anyone move/visit here: be very picky about the insulation, heating, sun and dampness of a potential house/apartment. Many (most) of them here are terrible. No insulation, drafty, damp, mildewy, etc. 50F in the winter is fine outdoors, awful indoors. Setting Hobbiton here was brilliant, some of the houses are like living in a hole in the ground.

I also hope you like stairs.

Oh god, the stairs. My morning walk to work was from sea level up to Kelburn Parade (~100m). Not a huge incline, except that most of it was one crazy steep flight of stairs that jutted up a sheer wall. Couldn't complain with the the view at the top though.

Yeah, I work at Victoria so I do that every day. I'm in much better shape than when I arrived.

We visited Australia in 07 - beautiful country; unfortunately, we did not get the chance to go to NZ.  The weird thing about "Down Under" though, is the evening sky - I could not recognize the constellations.

Oh, if you're under 30 with no kids you can get a 1-year "working holiday" visa to bum around and work part time.

I will be in Brisbane in 1 week on a working holiday visa. It seriously took like 15 minutes to complete the application and I was approved in 5 minutes by email. I think the 400$ AUD fee came out of my bank account even quicker.

Any .AU Farkers want to meet up in Brisbane CBD August 8th for my birthday festivities?
