What the fark is Fez?  Because it's not Rez, and Rez is the only 3 letter game ending in 'ez' that matters.

Derek Smart was the greatest asshole developer ever.  His legacy was a game called Battlecruiser 300AD, but the real game was provoking him to explode on Usenet and killfile you.  It was epic.

Mixed emotions on this one.
The guy made a fun game and he's got a talent for design, but he is also his own worst enemy and has one of the worst personalities in the history of software development.  He has a habit for burning bridges and is easily spun up into these kinds of suicide watch frenzies. I've got no clue what he's doing on twitter, much less dealing with the press.

He needs a handler and rule one should be to keep him away from other human beings.
He'd probably be happier that way.

The reason he gets constant shiat from strangers is because he was a dick to begin with. Other non-dick developers don't get constant shiat, because they're not dicks. This guy doesn't understand that you get back what you put out there.

The industry is much better off without a developer like that. In any other industry selling a product you know is broken and refusing to fix it is pretty much unacceptable, I don't know why he thinks it's ok for him (and I don't know why the industry never really took him to task for it). He may have a very corrosive and awful public personality, but it's his blatant abuse of the consumer that makes me say "Good Riddance."

The single biggest bottleneck on Kerbal is the proc speed per core.  It only uses one core because the bloody UNITY engine it's built on.  They can't fix that, the unity folks have to.

But even so, it's absolutely worth the time.  I haven't had this much fun in ages.

Curious have you solved the lack of being able to double-connect things without just resorting to strut-hell?  That's been my biggest hang-up thus far.

Testiclaw: Have been considering Kerbal, but not sure if my laptop could handle it or not.

You can tailor the graphics to meet whatever radeon it is, the ram is good, the 2.6Ghz dualcore (hopefully Intel) can stand up to likely a 300ish part ship before you'd have to mess with the delayed time to let the physics do its thing.  (the physics engine is single-threaded so faster core speed = more it can handle).  The reason I mention the physics engine is because as you add more parts it takes more effort to do its thing and the game has an unfortunate way of dealing with low frames per second with physics and that's to drop some of the calculations which in turn means some parts stop adding to your ship's ability to stick together, namely the structs.  As I mentioned though you can tweak it to let the launch actually happen slower then real time and give the physics engine more time to do its thing properly.  For *really* big ships this is pretty much mandatory, that's all.

And a better side shot of the engines.

That mission made it to Laythe, dropped the colony pod (not shown) into the surface, and stayed in orbit. Great success, lot of work, lot of fun.

And THIS bastard is the Minimus base I built in .19 (before learning how to turn off the UI or get rid of junk) It's 12 different flights all sent up, landed, and properly smooshed together by hand.

i.imgur.com
Another interplanetary flight. This one I tried Scott Manley's methods of gravity slingshots and got this space station in a VERY low polar orbit around Moho via a quick bank off of Eve. I don't think I'm building these things practically. That's 5 double stacks of the big ass fuel tanks with a 3 cluster of atomic engines on each. It got there, but I feel like I'm working too hard.

I'd also settle if they'd rejig things for the Nvidia Physx support to come into play if available, I've got three big beautiful GTX580 3GB editions and since I only play KSP on single screen I'd love to devote one of them to the task instead of one of my 4.8Ghz i2600K's cores.

If it doesn't go fast enough to get orbit, add more boosters.

Everything else is minor variation.

Nope, haven't bought an EA product since they bought Virgin games and cancelled Thrill Kill despite it being finished, screwing the developers.

Have a look at  http://www.capsu.org/bc3k/2.html for a pretty good summary of the mess centered around Mr. (or is it Dr.? I keep forgetting) Smart.  Some of the actual flame war could probably still be dug up if you did enough searching through Google Groups, but lots of it existed on BBS, CompuServe, and AOL forums that have since been lost to antiquity.

Basically the game was being hyped for almost a decade prior to release, was unplayable (and I don't mean that hyperbolically) when it came out, and took something like two or three more years to get patched and corrected.  By the early 2000s when the original was available for free and the sequels were starting to dribble out, the games were playable, but were WAY too "sandbox" and didn't have much of a campaign.  Who cares if you can go anywhere and do anything if there are no actual goals?

I wish I had video of this weird crash I had. Everything blew up except for this one little bit of structural wing. And it kept flying. And flying. AND FLYING. Eventually it made it all the way past that island with the other airfield on it, reaching about 430 meters in height and a speed of about 60m/s. Just a wing.

Lift seems to be a very buggy thing in this game. Check out some of the "flapping powered" infini-gliders.

One of the worst things I saw at GDC this year were people asking to take pictures with Phil Fish.  One of the best things I saw was someone photobombing one of those photos and yelling things at him like "asshole."  I would feel bad for the guy if it weren't for the fact that he is an asshole.

It's sad because I really wanted to play Fez, but his personality deters me from giving him money.  Also I know that it's broken and he refuses to fix it.

I think he thinks he's Jonathan Blow and he's really not.

He may be an asswipe, but he's not wrong. Even on the PS3, you don't see games like Uncharted, The Last of Us, or Heavy Rain coming out of Japan. In the PS1 era almost all the great games were coming out of Japan, but I can't remember the last time I even played a game from a Japanese studio, and my primary console is a PS3.

All three series named are cinematic non-games that do exactly the kind of hand-holding they complain about.

The Last of Us is not a cinematic non-game.  It is a cinematic game-game.

Yeah, I've seen those inifinigliders.  Quite odd.

There's another point of contrast between Fez and Kerbal Space Program.  You don't see anyone getting this enthusiastic over Fez.  You don't have people offering pictures of their beloved creations on Fez.

It takes a good game to build a little community.  Maybe Sir Onehitwonder McDouche the Fez programmer will learn that lesson during his brief hiatus.

Like others have mentioned, he's a game developer who would have big flame wars on message boards and chat rooms with anyone who didn't like his games. He claimed to have a PHD and he would send fake (I think) court papers claiming he was suing you. It's been a long time, so I may have that wrong. You can probably find some stuff on Something Awful. I think it was them who created the trailer for his best game, Desktop Commander, look it up on YouTube.

DoomPaul: Cpl.D: [i.imgur.com image 850x478] Forget that asshole.  This is now a Kerbal thread.

How is it? It's still in alpha or beta and not officially finished, right?

It's pretty fun.  Most of the game is in building rockets, going somewhere with it, and then getting back home again (or not).  And building bigger things by docking smaller craft together.  There's not much to do or see on any of the planets, except for planting a flag and a few exceptions/easter eggs/interesting geological features.

It's also quite moddable, with lots available.  People can make dlls to plug in to it and such.  Like the Kethane mod that adds a scanner and mining tools and such to mine this methane-esque stuff to convert into various types of fuel, so you can do stuff like set up orbital refuelling stations with dockable/detachable mining craft that you can pilot down, deploy your drills, fill em with a full load of kethane/convert til your fuel is full, and then back up to the station/mining barge to transfer your haul over to refuel bigger spacecraft that need to go farther out.
