I have never played Fez and I don't care how many people say that it's good; this guy is an arrogant dick and I will boycott him for life. He sounds like one of those guys who talks just so much because he's never been made to swallow his teeth.

2013-07-28 02:23:52 PM
Well, I've never heard of him or the game he wrote, that's a couple of data points right there.

2013-07-28 02:24:54 PM
A quick perusal of Google pretty much confirms the guy is a hipster douche with a big mouth and inflated ego.

Only a matter of time before he tries to slink back into the limelight or tries to establish himself as an edgy artist in some other venue.

2013-07-28 02:25:16 PM
The gaming scene will be better off without him. He made one fairly good indie game and then went all Kanye West on everyone. He alienated most of the people who helped him achieve his vision and, despite the fact that video games are supposed to be fun for the PLAYER, he's always made it clear that he's in game development for himself.

At GDC, when asked earnestly by a Japanese gamer what the panel thought about modern Japanese games, Phil Fish stated, looking into the man's eyes, "They suck. You guys need to get with the times."

The rest of the answer is actually bearable, but Phil Fish is an arrogant asshole.

Dude openly mocks families of people that have committed suicide. The world would be better off without him.

2013-07-28 02:33:42 PM
This absolutely has everything to do with a Twitter fight, and nothing to do with the fact that the dev probably had been staring blankly at a Visual Studio.NET New Project screen for the past 6 months.

2013-07-28 02:34:00 PM
I wish I could generate the energy to care, one way or another.  Everyone involved looks and sounds like an asshole.  Fark em all.

2013-07-28 02:54:02 PM
Gaming truly will never be the same without this pretentious, egotistical bag of douche. I mean, how many developers of indie platformers could there be, anyway?

2013-07-28 02:56:47 PM
I dunno, maybe gaming needs more raging assholes to generate press/buzz/attention to the people who actually make the games. Every face needs a heel, right?

2013-07-28 02:56:54 PM
I knew this was going to be about Phil Fish before even opening the article. Haven't played Fez, though I've heard a lot of praise for it. But after seeing how much of an arrogant cockbag and whiner this guy is in Indie Game The Movie, I don't want to play it.Good riddance.

I never did see the acclaim for Fez. There's no real penalty for dying and the puzzles aren't complex, in my opinion. Although it did have good atmosphere, styling, and music.

Anyway, he's been an asshole and prima donna in the past and it looks like he's not changing.

2013-07-28 03:05:54 PM
Saw him in the film "Indie". Seemed normal until about half way through and then he just started coming off the rails as a one of those people who create their own problems with their mouth, then whine they have problems and how unfair it is the world is out to get them and doesn't understand their genius.
If he kept his mouth shut in public and walked away when he wanted to rage rather than make a public display of things, he would have been ok.
Now? Just a no body who made a game once.

2013-07-28 03:15:23 PM
Meh.  If he didn't code Wing Commander or one of the MicroProse games, he's a nobody.

He may be an asswipe, but he's not wrong. Even on the PS3, you don't see games like Uncharted, The Last of Us, or Heavy Rain coming out of Japan. In the PS1 era almost all the great games were coming out of Japan, but I can't remember the last time I even played a game from a Japanese studio, and my primary console is a PS3.

2013-07-28 03:25:09 PM
It's funny because I heard he spouted about how he was going to keep going despite the slapfight and just cancels the game anyway. Reminds me of people that go "I'M NOT MAD!" while shouting at the top of their lungs and clenching their fists.

Fez is a decent game but it's a shame the guy has to swell up with his ego and try to make himself the center of the Indie game world. Edmund Mcmillen. Jonathan Blow. The guys who made Faster Than Light. Those are guys that deserve respect.

It's funny that Jonathan Blow has also been critical against the gaming industry and what they shelve out. He got a little egotistical over Braid and even got a spot in the Sony Conference to show off his new game but he just seems way more laid back than Fish.

Dark Souls? Metal Gear Solid franchise? just about every fighting game except for MK?

Part of is that American and Japanese players are looking for different kinds of games.  There is some overlap, but stuff like Modern Warfare just isn't huge over there, and there are now enough American made RPGs coming out that the entire library isn't all JRPGs anymore

2013-07-28 03:34:52 PM
Phil Fish is pretty much the most whiny shiathead in game dev, and that's saying a lot.

His consoles vs PC nonsense (before porting Fez, a vastly-overrated unoriginal platformer, to PC to make some extra cash) was quite dumb, to say nothing of his... um, unique approach to PR: "suck my dick. choke on it."

Dude made a broken product (Fez), releases a broken patch, and refuses to cover the cost of fixing the broken product he is selling. The industry is much better off without a developer like that. In any other industry selling a product you know is broken and refusing to fix it is pretty much unacceptable, I don't know why he thinks it's ok for him (and I don't know why the industry never really took him to task for it). He may have a very corrosive and awful public personality, but it's his blatant abuse of the consumer that makes me say "Good Riddance."

2013-07-28 03:44:16 PM
I installed Fez today and the game bugs out two minutes from starting up, so I'm not all that broken up that the developer isn't going to make another game. Enjoy my $5, asshole.

Beta.  But awesomely so.  Get the demo off steam... free, and you can still fly to the Mun.

The game's adverts are seriously misleading.  It looks like a goofy game devoid of complexity or realism.  It actually has large amounts of both.

Newton is king in this game.  Don't think achieving orbit is something easy.  Landing on the Mun is harder.  And docking?  You gotta learn how to hit a bullet with a bullet.  But, there's tools in the game to make plotting orbits easier.

Also, watch Scott Manley's youtube video tutorial series.  They are accurate and concise.

Yeah, the Ghibli thing is just about the only thing that interests me on the PS3 aside from those aforementioned games... Uncharted, Last of Us, Heavy Rain.

Capcom's Dragon's Dogma was a breath of fresh air, though.

All three series named are cinematic non-games that do exactly the kind of hand-holding they complain about.
