Ha, subby made a funny. There's nothing prime about NBC.

They could put him on Lockup.

The original Law & Order was canceled because of all of Leno's shenanigans while Law & Order: Rape, Rape, and more Rape inexplicably lives on.  I hope you're happy, Jay Leno.

NBC needs to quit kidding itself and realize that Jay is going to Fox.  Rupert probably has him on speed dial by now.

I read recently that "The Jay Leno Show" was pulling in better ratings than NBC's current 10pm shows at a fraction of the cost. What can they offer Leno other than more prime time? NBC is probably pitching him a dozen different sitcoms and a 60 - 90 minute Sunday night variety show. Lorne Michaels is now the king of NBC late night, so it's going to be a challenge to find a place for Leno.

I'm guessing Leno goes to syndication for a few years before retiring.

That's because SVU is a chick show and women will watch anything, no mater how thin the plot is as long as it hits their emotions. (See Lifetime and USA)

To be fair, USA is the Law and Order: SVU/CI and NCIS channel.

Give him two hours on Saturday night.  It's not like there is anything on TV that night, and his demographic is all home anyway.

Make it a variety show.  He could host an english language Sabado Gigante!

You know the phrase "Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it" generally implies a time span in excess of 10 or 20 years at least.

I know SNL is basically Lorne Michaels' baby, but he really needs to be replaced as producer.

USA is Lifetime with a larger budget. It's either a buddy cop/law show or a woman in a man's world overcoming adversity while getting some action from an ex or co-worker on the side.

Lorne Michaels can make people verbally and physically abused by Alec Baldwin apologize to Baldwin.

Who is going to fire Michaels?

What's the deal with Leno and NBC?  Why not just let him stay on with the Tonight Show?

I don't like Leno and don't think he's funny.  Many comedians I do like rush to proclaim his greatness in stand-up whenever his name comes up, but I find intractable issues with his approach to comedy.

Comedy is based on conflict.  Conflict between expectations and results, conflict between the sexes, generations, religions, conflict between performer and audience.  Without conflict, there is no comedy.  And Leno has built his career on avoiding conflict.

But that aside, a quick google shows he is severely kicking Letterman's and Kimmel's asses in the rating.

Why is NBC in such a rush to cancel a a guy who's winning his time slot?

USA and SyFy are NBC's way of getting men to watch programming marketed to women.

Because he's not funny and the only people that watch him are Baby Boomers who still watch the Tonight Show out of habit from when Carson hosted. Now those people aren't watching as much anymore and their kids are watching Conan/Daily Show/or someone else.  Basically if you're under 45 you aren't watching the Leno and if you're over 45 you're asleep before it's 11:30.

^^^This.^^^

Key thing is: it needs to be a variety show. Not a "Jay Leno hosts a variety show" show, a variety show. And by "variety", I mean bringing in the whole "every show in one" aspect of Sabado Gigante. (You know, for us New York area folks, they managed it for the kid audience with Wonderama.)

The TV graveyard of history is littered with Saturday extravaganzas (The Jerry Lewis Show, Saturday Night Live With Howard Cosell) that failed owing to ego...but on the other hand, there's Sabado Gigante.

For the same reason WWE was in a huge rush to end the TV career of Jim Ross - because he's old, white haired, has a funny voice and they are DEATHLY afraid if he ever leaves unexpectedly (illness or death), they'll be left without anything. They also were not singularly responsible for Leno's career, unlike Conan (Sorry, Team Coco, he was nothing but a writer before Late Night) and Fallon (who was a hack comedian... well some things never change). The person who sets up the next cornerstone in the Tonight Show Empire is set for life.

Except that you're completely wrong because Leno is still winning in the Adults 18-49 demo. NBC seems to have this pathological fear that at some point in the unknown future, Leno is going to drop out of first and that the audience won't come back for his successor. But they've been thinking that for 15 years now and it still hasn't happened.

Leno doesn't make it easy for them because he doesn't quit.  Carson decided he'd had enough when he perceived a certain lack of respect from the network, which then as now was worried about demographics, plus he actually enjoyed leisure activities enough to not NEED to perform (though he missed it enough to do monologues over the phone for friends and fax jokes for Letterman to use).  It should be noted that Leno is still a few years younger than Carson was when he retired.

How about a new version of Who's Line Is It Anyway featuring Leno, Sharpton, Andy Dick, Sean Hannity and Kathy Griffin, and hosted by Carlos Mencia using material stolen from Dane Cook?

During sweeps week, they could all perform in knitted thongs and... sorry, hold on, I've got to go talk my TV off a ledge.

Crap. Cue cartoon explaining the difference between "who's" and "whose".

I miss the original L&O and they bumped SVU back and hour and toned down the content for the new time slot because of his show which, in my area it seemed, the local affiliate was cramming down our throats. Literally they would start at the 4:30pm newscast telling us about Jay's show that night and continue until primetime started at 7pm.

/by the way whatever happened to that affiliate who chose to not air his show and air local programming and NBC biatch slapped them for it?  Did they ever get to go back to airing regular NBC programming?

WHDH in Boston, they chickened out on not showing Leno, sadly.

His ratings in that demographic are significantly down from when he was at his peak before he left Tonight the first time. He's pulling in roughly the same number Conan was getting in the Tonight slot in 18-49.

Making a big deal about Big Jaw being #1 in late night when everyone is declining is like making a big deal that Blockbuster is the #1 brick and mortar video rental store. It doesn't mean much when you're business is down and NBC has already had to fire people on Leno's staff because the show isn't making enough money for the network.

My understanding is Leno's salary also makes him very expensive. If you could get rid of Leno and install the much cheaper Jimmy Fallon and get maybe close to the same ratings it would probably be considered a win. Especially since locking in Fallon now means they have someone with buzz who could stick around for another 20 years (whereas Leno is almost as old as Johnny Carson was when he retired).  Especially since the chances of Leno going somewhere else are probably much lower than they were in 2009. I mean yes he could go to Fox or syndication but with ratings down they might not be interested in his 60's who costs a lot of money and maybe only has a few years left. He could go to ABC but with ABC moving Jimmy Kimmel to 1135, the chance of Leno going to ABC are pretty small.
