This happened to me just last month.  It's an easy mistake to make.

Crashed the car and then ditched his six year old son to run from the police? Father of the year material here.

How don't most people by now, not realize that in this day an age. You will almost always, not be able to "outrun" the cops and get away? Why add more to the charges? Is it a cred thing once you make to prison? Do they figure, what the hell, I know I'm going to jail tonight, so I might as well give them a run for their money? You know they are going to catch you. Why make it worse on your self?
And Danm! In this guys case, he would have dinner and sleep in his own bed. Instead, he's in a jail cell. WTHell is wrong with people?

Seeing as he incorrectly assumed that his license was suspended and still drove anyway, I'm going to figure that critical thinking wasn't exactly high on his list of life goals.

No, I really don't think that critical think and life goals has anything to do with it.
I really think that they are just plain thinking that they can maybe get away and if they don't, which they won't, that they will have some celebrity cred for it.
And I just don't understand that line of thinking.

I guess he followed subby's advice -- he made sure it's not just suspended, but  really suspended.

Or he could have pulled over and ended up like Trayvon.

Actually, having watched too many episodes of cops and real highway patrol and this and that, a lot of police departments have policies in place to call off pursuits if the person they're pursuing is driving beyond x limit of ridiculous.

So it's my thought that these folk also watch these shows, and think "drive ridiculous as possible, you're almost home free!"

Then they wrap their dumb asses around something because they suck at driving to begin with, without being excessively erratic, and that's that. Cops wrap em up, story gets to fark, and we all have a laugh or two.

That's my theory anyway!

And then if you do manage to get away, you'll go...where?  They'll check your home and work and if your escape caused damages (ex. crashed police cruiser) then they'll probably check the homes of friends and family, too.

It won't work in a city, or on an interstate.

I've seen it work in very rural areas though (have a brother-in-law who has done it, and known some cops who've lost people in bum-fark-egypt).  It's possible in rural Kentucky, with lots of winding backroads that twist and turn and intersect and branch off, lots of hills and forests that block line of sight.

Basically, in highly rural areas you aren't going to have air cover for any pursuits like you see on TV, and backup is rare and distant (and the only PD'd with jurisdiction are going to be the local Sheriff's Office, which may only have a few deputies on shift at a time, and if the others are busy with something else it might be a while, or the State Police (which typically only have one or two troopers in the more rural counties at a time), so again, if they are busy or are on the far end of the county, it's going to be tough.

So, if they haven't got the plates of the car, and they can keep ahead and lose their pursuer in various turns and side-roads, they can elude pursuit.  Of course, you get caught, it's trouble, but it does happen. . .just not in those big cities the media likes to cover.

I knew a guy who bragged about out running the cops.  He said he just out accelerated the cops till they lost sight of him long enough for him to pull off the road and hid behind a billboard.  He drove a motorcycle at the time.  I think he was already on probation at the time, so he really didn't want to get stopped.
