Public pay phone stalls in use at Broadway and 34th Street, in May of 1973. The first handheld mobile phone call in history was made one month prior to this photo, in midtown Manhattan, in April 1973, when Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher made a call to his chief competitor Dr. Joel S. Engel, head of Bell Labs

Oh, snap.

These are great.  God, what a wild time that was.  The very beginnings of the computer age, but the the reverberations of the 40's and 50's influences were still strong.

In the one picture from Chicago, there's a store and you can see the prices, a carton of cigarettes for $3.25 and a six pack of beer for $1.15. Beer that cheap would make for some epic fark parties.

I remember a pack of Marlboros were .55 cents..Then they jacked it up to .75 cents..They changed the price on the machine,But if you simply put it .55 cents you got a pack.
