I wonder how hard a pet bat would be to keep? Most likely more effort than I'm willing to put forth, but I'm curious.

I thought this was going to be about those miniature baseball bats they sell at the stadiums.

Oh, they're cute when they're small, sure sure, but what about when they're seven feet tall and want to borrow the car at 3 AM to go cruising for bat chicks and they come home reeking of liquor and cigarettes, bug juice running down their chins, and they climb up on the rafters and pass out? What happens when they break your heart?

Sign them up for the Air Force, they'll be much happier there.

This message brought to you by the US Air Force: Yeah, we got cable.

My little girls' favorite fruit bat.
Bought the book a few years back and would read it to my daughter. Even bought the plush toy. Would read it to her at bedtime or nap time.
Those were awesome days. Before separating and divorce.
Goddamnit, now I have a sad.......

That last one is approximately 150 orphaned infant bats that were shaken from palm trees in Florida recently. They were so tiny that they had to be fed via milk soaked make up sponges. 120 survived and were successfully put back into the trees with the bat colony they were believed to have been displaced from to begin with.

When my niece was little she and her parents lived in Australia for a year. Stellaluna was also her favorite book and for many years my sister drove around in her jeep with the plush hanging upside down from the rear view. Anyway, I wish I had scanned the photo but while at a botanical garden a huuuuge fruit bat swopped down and wrapped his massive wingspan around her head. She had this colorful barrette in her hair so they think he probably that that and her red hair were a fruity snack. Well, this bat and my niece, who was 6 at the time, were nose to nose and staring at one another for a long time. She didn't freak out at all. Mr. Fruit Bat just felt awkward "Oh... well, erm... this isn't what I expected. Sorry kid." When he flew off she spent the rest of the day trying to find more bats and asking their guide a bajillion questions about them. She wanted one as a pet for years after that.

A single brown bat can catch around 1,200 mosquito-size insects in one hour.  Why wouldn't you want to save a bat?

I've never read any Christopher Moore.  My brother keeps telling me to read The Gospel According to Biff, but I haven't got around to it.  I guess if he writes about bats, he must be OK.  :-)

oh, If you like absurdest humor, he is your guy.. And TGAB is pretty much the one that everyone starts with... I devoured it on a airplane ride from Virginia to Oregon, laughing out loud the entire time. keep in mind that it is his... fourth book.

All of the books have a supernatural bend to them, and the characters and locations from other books tend to pop up in other books. Practical Demon keeping and TGAB are tied together
He is also a very nice, approachable guy, who personally answers his own E-mail and what not.

I can't recommend the author guy enough.

Recommendation taken.  I'll start as soon as I finish my current "pleasure-reading" book.

I agree, but it's not just the bats.  People spread diseases to all the animals they mess with.

Those are definitely NOT the kind of fruit bats we get here in NJ.  They are easily 5 times the size, and they are still babies.

Cuteness for the win, just the same!

I mean. No.

I don't kill people.
