Is this the part where all the intellectually superior Community geeks talk about what a brilliantly under-appreciated TV show it is, or was, until show runner Dan Harmon left and then it slipped into mediocrity last season but he's back so it will be totally awesome again, even without megalomaniac Chevy Chase?

Blah, blah, blah.

Get back to me when it's been on at least seven seasons and maybe even spawned a movie.

They can survive without Chase, but  Donald Glover's role reduction is going to be a much bigger blow to the show than Harmon's departure. Though even Harmon coming back doesn't really inspire that much confidence, even if last season was underwhelming.

Sex sells to the masses, and by sex I mean boobs, and by masses I mean heterosexual men and lesbians.  However, the trailer is actually a brilliant representation of the show, there's more to it than meets the eye.  Sure, your average Joe is going to pick up on the superficial message, sexboobsexboobsexboobsex.  However, the sex and boobs are actually metaphors for a much deeper message.  Well, maybe the sex and boobs are a simile.  I always get those two confused, metaphors and similes.  One of them is like a comparison using like or as, the other is a way of stating similarities in a less structured manner.  But that's not the point.  The point is most Community viewers don't really get boobs or sex and the Internet has a short attention span.

This cannot be the darkest timeline, for Alison Brie has not been replaced by Victoria Jackson.

Regarding Donald Glover's role reduction:
I would think the Harmon fanboys would have full confidence in him to keep the high standard even if the entire cast were to be replaced. I mean, theoretically, there's no reason the show couldn't continue with new cast members indefinitely if the show is about the college and not the cast. Cast members could graduate, and new ones could be freshman. Maybe even someone like Jeff could end up a professor himself, to kind of act as a glue to hold it all together, with Jeff and the Dean remaining as others are replaced. If only Bill Murray would replace Chevy (obvious meta joke), throw in a couple of unknowns and one known commodity (Ryan from the Office could be the new Jeff in the group). Some could remain as a bridge, since not everybody graduates at the same pace.

even considering the reasons you gave, I think maintaining quality during a role reduction of a major character would be a rather hard feat for any showrunner.

that said, I guess I'm not a Harmon fanboy as I was convinced that season 4 of Community would've been fairly crap even if Harmon was kept on board.

I've been going through some shiat and (I realize this sounds pathetic but I don't really care at this point) Community has been kinda like my happy place for the past few years. I could always watch an episode and at least momentarily escape the clusterfark my life has become.

I didn't give a shiat that Chevy left, I was irritated about Harmon's firing when it happened but got over it (glad he was rehired after watching season 4 though), but I am SO upset about the news of Donald Glover leaving (and the fact that that means after 5 episodes there will be NO MORE TROY AND ABED - like...I need help reacting to this...) and now I can't even think about the show without feeling depressed.

Happy place ruined. I wish the show had just been cancelled.

/still gonna watch but it will never be the same without Troy.

true, though I'm more annoyed that he's leaving Community to focus on a really  awful rap project. Childish Gambino is seriously terrible. I'm sure to some extent he's leaving because he really can't see the show lasting beyond its current season (though I think most thought this about season 3) and he might as well get out while he can, but still...
