So, this will be one and a half half lives?

2013-07-26 04:03:50 PM
Ehhh much like Duke Nukem Forever, the amount of hype surrounding this game will mean it won't ever acheive the expectations that people have put on it.

Now unlike Duke Nukem, it will still be damn good, but it won't exceed expectations like HL2 did. Too much time has passed.

/Now if they find a way to cross Portal into it, I'll retract everything I said
//Chell and Freeman should meet on the Borealis and have a 2 hour long silent conversation

Of course they're going to cross Portal into it. They have to.

What would be their excuse if they didn't?

"Hey - there was no references to the world of Portal in Half-Life 3. Why did you guys insert the Borealis into Portal if you weren't going to tie those two worlds together somehow?"

"Eh, I don't know. We just like to fark with people."

"But that would have been a really epic cross-over! So many cool things that could have happened with that!"

"Yep. Probably woulda been. But we're a bunch of dicks, so...fark off! Ha ha!"

I disagree: they just need to finish the story.

Blues_X: What... in the f*ck.... is taking so damned long?

I am a ninth degree black belt procrastinator, so I speak with great authority on this subject. The Half-Life world is their baby. This is what put them on the map, so they wanted to make the conclusion the End-All, Be-All video game experience. So they kept putting it off until they felt like they had the ideas / hardware / software to make it so. But nothing was ever perfect enough, so it sat, and it sat, and it sat.

Here's to hoping that Gabe finally said, "Fark it. No idea is ever going to be perfect enough in my mind, so let's just go with what we have and be done with it."

You know what other game suffered that exact same fate?

Duke Nukem Forever.

Duke Nukem

was a fun game, sure. I would argue that it didn't have nearly the same impact on the world of gaming like Half-Life did, though, so the Duke Nukem guys' heads were swelled way too much.

I bet it's those damned vortigons.  They look like lazy aliens to me.  Or it could be headcrabs, I just don't know or care.  Just effing finish the mothereffing story.

Or they make so much money off steam these days they have no real desire to actually make games anymore and instead choose to focus on running the game distribution side of their company.

Valve has also released Team Fortress 2, Portal 1/2, and Left 4 Dead 1/2 since HL EP2 so we know they can still make some fun games. I have heard too many of HL3 rumors in the past to believe this one. I won't believe anything unless it comes from Valve itself.

The developers are locked in a dark room filled with crates and headcrabs, and have nothing to defend themselves with but a crowbar.

Well it's not like they've been doing nothing in the interim. TF2, L4D 1 and 2, Portal 1 and 2, Dota2....Steam?

If they've been working on it at some point in this calendar year, that means it's been 6 years since Half Life 2: Episode 2. It was 6 years between Half Life and Half Life 2. The internet just needs to calm down a bit.

2013-07-26 06:01:01 PM
Meh, I don't care.
I remember having my mind-balls blown by Half-life.
I remember having my mind-balls blown by Half-life 2.
I remember thinking that Episode 2 was pretty fun, but just sort of meh. Not great, definitely not terrible. I never finished it.

So I'm not really all that excited for the next installment.  I've long since moved on to other things.

Half Life 3 is supposedly in the early stage of development, and the goal is to have a trailer ready for next year's E3.

There better be a Portal Gun in HL3.

Maybe one of the alternate dimension Cave Johnsons made a deal with the Combine to supply all the off-white "paint" for their buildings.

I have one request, minimal corridors.  HL2 was great, but gawd damn if they didn't like keeping you on rails for most of it.  They've created an awesome distopian future world, and I want to see more of it.

2013-07-26 06:12:23 PM
I'm hoping they'll innovate a little with HL3. Instead of just another dystopian FPS, maybe they'll rethink it entirely.

Here's hoping HL3 is a turn-based strategy game. With ASCII graphics. And card battle elements.

/and microtransactions. Gotta collect all the different colored crowbars.

Halflife is one of those rare game franchises that wasn't really about the story.
I don't think its lack of script or level building that's held it up. Rather a problem of what can you do to knock things out o the park. What will set 3 apart so much as 1 and 2 rewrote how games were made. What makes this the next step in our evolution.

For a long time I was convinced that 3 would never come since game technology has stagnated in the console era. Yea its all shiny now, but nothing's really different from HL2 except the draw quality.
Now I'm worried that, if they still haven't found a new bag of tricks, they'll just phone It in and only deliver another episode in the storyline.

That would be underwhelming if it happens.

Nonsense. Making an FPS without crates is like making an adventure game without rope.

It is a third person game, but The Last of Us with its crafting system managed to avoid the tedious crate searching of games like Bioshock Infinite (where you spend half the game looking for money people inexplicably threw into the trash). You still have to do some foraging for items, but they are at least in logical places like cabinets and drawers. It's not too far removed from the traditional crate and box system, but it is just different enough that it feel fresh.

Or like making a sword & sorcery game without elves... or running a strip club without "Girls, Girls, Girls", "Pour Some Sugar on Me", "Cherry Pie", and "Drop-Dead Legs" in the DJ booth.

It just can't be done. Actually, I think the latter is prohibited by federal law.

Something called Steam. It prints money, so there's no incentive to finish (or even start) the game.

Red barrels are a must as well.

And no multiplayer???

So much this. HL2DM is the most fun I've ever had playing a free-for-all style death match game. Shame that Valve never showed it the love it so deserved.

UT99 was awesome, but I think what I played the most was the crazy assault levels made for UT2k3, the platforms floating in a void levels with extremely long and complicated goals were always a lot of fun I thought.

I just realized I need to go play through HL2 and the add-ons cuz I don't remember how they resolve. But we know The Agent has a hardon for Gordon, we could see him slipped elsewhere to be of service to some new story line. "This era will resolve itself, we need you elsewhere, elsewhen."

You realize that there was 6 years between Half Life and Half Life 2,right? This is 8 or so, but it is nowhere near the time, nor the "any day, now" hype of the giant turd that was Duke Nukem.

Besides, the guys with Half Life actually know how to write in a storyline.... As for this article, I saw something this weekend that confirmed it as hoping to possibly be released next year, but from a far less shady sounding source. I thought everyone had heard this...

I sure hope it's legit. I agree, the story has another chapter left...

"Guthrie also said that Half Life 3 will be a single-player game only; no multiplayer or co-op."

That's the best news of all... I m getting tired of them making all the good games either multiplayer only, or giving them a crappy single player mode.

I like to play when I like to lay. I like a storyline to go along with my game. I like to play without having to worry about some cheat laden jackass who hasn't hit puberty to come onto a server where I've been playing all night, start headshotting everyone and then screeching into the mic with his Peter Brady voice.

Besides, most multiplayer games throw up nothing but capture the flag and deathmatch modes. TF2 and Counterstrike are good exceptions to that rule, though, and the only things I play online anyway.

My only request would be a sandbox world. I'm not a big fan of linear games, and the HL games are VERY linear. It's a testament to how awesome the fights, the weapons, the graphics and the story lines were that I keep playing them over, even now.
