Wait... all my friends posting "the day the north pole turned into a lake" on Facebook are wrong? Because this very article says thathappens every July. And sometimes its worse.

Well, still climate change, but not "ZOMG! First time ever!"

Yeah, I wouldn't let the poorly-informed sway on climate change one way or the other.

"I have seen much more extensive ponding," James Morison, the principal investigator for the North Pole Environmental Observatory told. "Because we use wide angle lenses the melt pond looks much bigger than it is."

This article sucks! The other greenlit article about this lake was much more dire and apocalyptic. How am I supposed to get any proper hand-wringing done if the article isn't screaming gloom and doom!?

From TFA -

"This type of melt isn't so unusual during the summer season, however.

'I have seen much more extensive ponding, James Morison, the principal investigator for the North Pole Environmental Observatory told  . "Because we use wide angle lenses the melt pond looks much bigger than it is."

WHY DO YOU HATE SCIENCE?
Alarmist, scaremongering, everybody panic science?

YOU MUST BE SOME KIND OF MORAN!

There is some disinfo going on here, but I'm not sure from where yet. An earlier article directly stated that this is the earliest and biggest they've seen the North Pole pond, and this article quotes a source that last year's was bigger. Truth stretching is happening... who's doing it?

People who don't know the difference between a lake and a polynya should be shot.

Here's the line from the last article (http://www.cbc.ca/news/yourcommunity/2013/07/north-pole-turned-into- la ke-from-global-warming-3.html)
"According to the National Snow and Ice Data Centre the first two weeks of July ice coverage declined 61 per cent faster than the average rate over the past three decades."
and
"In 2012, this video from the observatory shows footage from a camera deployed on an ice floe for the summer. The melt at it's peak turned the ice into a patchwork of tiny ponds, then froze up again."

But this article quotes James Morison, North Pole Environmental Observatory's principal investigator as saying, "I have seen much more extensive ponding because we use wide angle lenses the melt pond looks much bigger than it is."

Also, I want to correct what I wrote above, the article does say that this year's is worse:
But this year's ice is weaker and thinner than last year's and has already been battered by previous cyclones.
It does show that, yes there is yearly melting, but it is getting worse. So whether you want to fall into the Alarmist or Denier camp, it's happening.

2013-07-26 03:27:32 PM
Also, I can totally see a bunch of douche bag enviro terroristas spending a week using propane fuelled tiger torches to melt a few square meters of polar ice cap so they can point and shout "see! Proof!".

2013-07-26 03:28:06 PM
That was a crap article.  And the comments on that article made me stabby.  I should know better, but fark me...

Maybe the source in the first article is on the first year of his North Pole lake watch, and has nothing to base a comparison on.

One more consideration: the National Post is a conservative paper. It is unfortunate that the argument for and against the possibility of Global Warming / Climate Change is predicated along party lines, but there ya go. The story is the lake (or polynya) in the North Pole, but how the story is covered by what slant seems to be the crux here.

The truth is not important when you're trying to educate people on Climate Change.

Fark everybody who turned this into a political topic instead of just leaving it as a scientific venture.

one of these days a small hole will appear in our atmosphere and every human and animal on earth will simultaneously run out of oxygen and die. that is global warming. until that happens or until atlantis is discovered, i could care less about some ice melting in the summer time.
