Woo Hoo! Urban Farming Time!

2013-07-26 12:32:44 PM
Why the hell is this coming from The Weather Channel?

Their attempts to create non-weather content pisses me the hell off.

2013-07-26 12:32:58 PM
Again?

Someday it will be an archaeological treasure trove under a parking lot or a forest.

Oh look. It's this thread. And photos.

Again.

And again.

 And again.

you would figure the beautiful finishing work and fixtures could be stripped out and sold... Even if it is "illegal" you'd figure someone would be working on that.

I gave up on them a few years ago.  They've gone full retard just like MTV and the History channel have.

Don't we get a photos-of-abandoned-Detroit thread every couple of months?

This, especially since all these pictures have been re posted from a TIME article about 4 years ago.

How many frickin' times are we going to greenlight this?  We get it:  Detroit's a shiathole.  It's always been a shiathole.  It always  will be a shiathole.  Right now, it just happens to be a shiathole with empty buildings and will be for some time.

2013-07-26 12:42:54 PM
Fallout 4 should be set in Detroit, clearly.  They'd not even need to do a conversion, they could just take the existing pics and model the levels off of reality.

Why hasn't Hollywood bought the entire city to use for their apocalyptic sets?

You know what'll fix all that right up? A billion dollar hockey arena, that's what!

Why not just bulldoze the entire city down and start anew?

/we can ship the delinquents in little crates out to sea.

The Weather Channel is losing ratings because people can get weather reports from their phones or the internet instead of watch a rotating regional report on tv. Only old people still watch it. So they are attempting to revitalize their market share with reality programming.

One of the many ways that the internet is killing tv.

Why hasn't Hollywood bought the entire city to use for their apocalyptic sets?

That is the same kind of forward thinking that does not belong here or in politics.

Yeah, all I know is I'm upstairs I'm listenin' to my Will Smith cd and I seen all these flames going everywhere you know what I'm sayin'? Hold on a minute. Yo! Hey, hold on a minute!

While is heartbreaking, no one ever talks about the good things going on there. A lot of the empty buildings downtown are being converted into office and residential space, including the David Whitney Building, which was pictured.

It seems to me that environmental scientists and groups should be chomping at the bit here. Land is plentiful, dirt cheap, and heavily contaminated: what better testbed could you possibly have for experiments in heavy-duty land reclamation/rehabilitation? Land sales could probably give the city a much-needed infusion of cash, too.

They basically did about 4 years ago because the state was giving tax incentives. Then those incentives expired... So the filming pretty much left.

I had an idea for a video game like that, set in an alternative history where the 2008 ressesion was even worse and ended up bankrupting the government and causing many areas in the USA to become ruled by drug cartel-like gangs.

I like how subby found this article in the Travel section. Of the Weather Channel site.

Also, with little police presence and no one around to call them anyway, I'm surprised those apartments and home aren't more ripped up than they already are. Copper pipes, anyone?

Build a giant wall around the city and ship all the prisoners there.

Maybe place cameras throughout to watch what the criminals are up to.

That's an improvement over a lot of places in Detroit.

No bombed out houses, the grass is cut, no homies pointing guns at you.

2013-07-26 12:59:56 PM
Most of those places aren't as trashed as I thought they would be. Around here, anything abandoned is completely ripped apart, as in even wall receptacles are bashed in.
It would be neat to refurbish and move into some small industrial building, in a hipster kind of way.
Except for the poverty, crime, violence, vermin, racism......

P.S.  Under the circumstances, is it really necessary to end the title of every image with "in Detroit"?

Yeah, I forgot, New Orleans is still completely underwater, we're bankrupt, and there's no hope in sight!!! Oh wait, the city is almost completely recovered and neighborhoods that were war-zones or worse before the storm are now pleasant communities. Oh, and small businesses are booming. Oh, and all the projects the company I used to work for are still operational, which was a huge chunk of New Orleans including Tulane University, Loyola University, University of New Orleans, Delgado CC, Xavier University, all of the Wal-Marts on the Gulf Coast, Audobon Aquarium, Audobon Zoo, nearly all of the major condo and luxury apartment buildings, every single hotel/motel our employees stayed in from top-to-bottom, all of the casinos, and really I could go on all day, but I think you get the point. Which is that you have no clue what you're talking about, not even in the slightest. But, hey, atleast you got someone to pay attention to you today!
