Am I missing something in the headline, or is subby just as bad with numbers as Detroit?

You know how I know subby wasn't a math major?

Detroit went bankrupt after a city with 1,850,000 people in 1950 became a city of 701,000 in 2013.

El Pachuco: Detroit went bankrupt after a city with 1,850,000 people in 1950 became a city of 701,000 in 2013.

And the 701,000 who stayed are the ones you wouldn't want to stay, from a solvency perspective.

Angry at Detroit because his botched facelift was done by a top surgeon at the Detroit Night Medical School and Janitorial College. Man that is one ugly SOB.

I think the new phrasing works well to emphasize the downward spiraling nature of the city.

Most here are too young to remember, but Detroit/Windsor used to have this really cool AM station, CKLW, 800 on the dial. A lot of FM stations try to emulate them without realizing it.

You can't argue with that.

I don't know what democrats expected to happen (or were thinking would happen) in Detroit with regard to the city's annually increasing debt.  Obviously, they were wrong.  However, democrats think that increasing the national debt can go on forever.

Are they wrong about that too?

I would say our national policies of allowing our manufacturing jobs leave the country probably had some part to do with it.

And yes I blame a lot of that on Clinton.

Yeah, but they're not in the White House right now, so this is very serious issue.

Like I said, capitalism. The city was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the auto companies and it was only good and healthy for the brief period that the UAW was both strong and interested in functioning as a union instead of a corporate partner of the auto companies. The Randian ubermenschen who owned the auto companies had no idea how to make or sell cars, the UAW was pressured into being "business friendly" and so they worked harder for the American auto industry than for their workers, and as soon as it was feasible to abandon American workers the auto companies did. The bosses have always made out big, and as long as people work to make other people money they always will.

Detroit would be in a much better position if the auto workers had been organized in a co-operative fashion where they controlled production instead of a contracted trade union fashion. The workers - people who actually buy and drive cars - were in a better position to understand the industry and where it was going in the 70s. They wouldn't have sold their own jobs to Japan and China or kept trying to make huge American deathtraps when people were buying smaller cars.

I didn't realize that New Deal & Great Society programs (not to mention Obamacare) were created by Republicans.  I did not realize that.  And the increase in the national debt since Obama took office... that's Republicans too?

No doubt, the Republican party bankrupted Detroit as well.

I've pointed it out before: Detroit started losing job in 1928 when Ford opened the River Rouge and moved the bulk of its workers out of the city.

The amazing thing about it was just how long they could kick that can down the road. Detroit has been in some serious shiat for like 30 years. It took a national housing collapse to finally push them over. I contend that no party could have done anything about it if they ever wanted to keep their job as the solutions were always so unpalatable as to be politically suicidal.

Real smooth comment there, freak daddy: Charles Krauthammer is paralyzed from the neck down and has been since around 1972. You might want to take a moment and read what he's accomplished in his life despite spending most of it in a wheelchair.

So you agree with him that capitalism caused Detroit? Are you really ignorant enough to try to defend that ridiculous statement?

Capitalism caused Detroit only to the extent it's not an undeveloped forest like it was 500 years ago occupied only by subsistence farmers or hunters/fishermen, whose life expectancy was under 40 years, but you can say that about any contemporary city in America.

Yours does, too.  Republican policies made it easy and attractive for the auto manufacturers (and others)to send jobs out of the country.

Detroit failed because people moved out. People moved out because industry began to die - not just the automotive industry but mostly them. The auto industry nearly died because the economy tanked and because years ago the Big Three stopped making good cars, which led to everyone around me driving Toyotas and Hondas. The Big Three stopped making good cars because of poor design, poor re-investment in training and new types of manufacturing, and incredibly stupid management decisions (like, hey let's totally redesign our most popular car the Taurus, turn it into an ugly bubble, and then end production entirely when it inevitably fails). Not to mention being in bed with oil and gas so much that you gave up on an electric vehicle program years ago despite pleas not to.

In short, crappy management and the death of manufacturing led to the failure of Detroit. The death of manufacturing was largely from the inability to compete with the global economy, which was frankly inevitable but largely due to capitalists like the people at the NRO, who are soulless Machiavellian assholes who also largely happen to be crappy managers.

FTFY. When the government isn't being a thug for big business, the businesses just arm themselves.
