So what's the problem? Sounds fair to me.

So what? It's freedom of speech. The same freedom these officers are sworn to protect. Who gives a fark if the guy told off color jokes? Not the fault of the police. Doesn't matter anyway. Everyone screams about their "rights" to the police, and something like this happens, and all of those same people start bawling like little coonts. Rights go both ways. NON story. Next.

Oh for chrissakes. San Juan is a comedian. He tells jokes.

He's a Filipino who grew up in LA, so you can understand where he's coming from. He doesn't know whether to raise dogs to fight or to eat.

It's comedy people, comedians often use race in their humor. I just watched a few of his videos on You Tube, all his stuff was pretty much the same so I guess they didn't bother looking into him much before they booked him for their little party.

I've seen a few standup acts where the comedian just says vile and offensive things, and it was generally unpleasant. If you can pair your offensiveness with actual humor it's fine, but vile and offensive statements are not funny in and of themselves.

I work for a company that is HQd in Germany, but is mostly run here in the US.  A couple of the German developers came over to California to work on something for a couple weeks; I was one of the primary people they were with here.

I intentionally let them get high and mighty over the fact that a small subculture of the US loves German industrial music; someone could just bark things that sound remotely German into a mic while throwing gears against a wall, and the song would get lots of play in clubs across the US.  Just when they were feeling the appropriate amount of smuggery, I asked them about David Hasslehoff.  One of them got all excited for a brief second, but realized it was a trap.  The other rolled his eyes and walked away.   Sure enough, of the two, one of the guys has posters of Hasslehoff on his cubical walls, and couldn't keep himself from telling me about all his favorite Hoff albums...even knowing we were laughing at him and that the whole conversation had been a trap.

There are most certainly some funny things about Germans.

Subby is clearly not from Los Angeles, or he would know that LAPD or the Los Angeles Police Department, and LA Sheriff, or Los Angeles County Sheriff, are two entirely different organizations.

LAPD = Rodney King beaters. Mexican newspaper delivery-woman shooters, etc...
LA County Sheriff = About the most professional law enforcement California has.

Besides which, it wasn't a deputy cracking those racist jokes, it was a hired comedian. You hire comedians to be offensive, that's what they do, it's their job.

2013-07-26 11:46:23 AM
Some people are just not honest with themselves, and want to project onto the world some bullshiat personality of tolerance, acceptance and compassion that is presented beyond the extreme. There was a comedian hired to speak at a luncheon, and comedians make jokes about race, sexuality, social class, and everyday situations. Once you associate racism to an act performed in front of "our finest", it actually shows that you, yourself, are biased, prejudiced, and I question the offended person's attitude regarding authority, and reality. It also gives me pause when I succumb to the idea that we're eroding the spirit of the first amendment, and turning into a nation of pussies because *words hurt me*.

Try crying about the sticks and stones, California.

If you make a bomb joke, we see that differently than a bomb threat.  But if you make a racist joke, suddenly jokes and threats are treated the same?  There's just no helping the populace.

Sammy Davis Jr. stepped onto a bus in Jacksonville, and the bus driver said, "N**ger, get to the back of the bus."

".... I was sitting there thinking, 'Are you kidding me?'"

Actually yes he was. That's....like, kind of the whole point of standup comedy.

2013-07-26 12:26:34 PM
In this whole thread, nobody has said they're offended.  In fact, I don't think I see one comment so far blaming the police for this.  Yet, the entire thread for the most part is right wing people standing up for the guy telling racist jokes.  If literally anybody had actually read the article though, the only people who spoke out about it in real life were the cops themselves.  Most of it read like this:

"He managed to insult every ethnic group," said one attendee, who requested that his name not be used. "There was a lot of cringing and nervous laughter.... I was sitting there thinking, 'Are you kidding me?'"

and

"It is perplexing that, as much as we fight racism on the department, the sheriff would embrace and seemed to condone the completely racist monologue," said a Sheriff's Department official who attended the lunch.

So basically, every right wing person in this thread is defending the cops from allegations of racism that the cops themselves are making.  No outside group was quoted in the article as being offended, just police officers that were there.

There's a big difference between acknowledging that something is offensive, and simply understanding that with so many sandy vaginas and crybabies out there today saying some shiat will just get you in trouble.

Is this a racial version of the aristrocrats?
I want to hear it.

It may say something about police mentality that they may do a racial version aristocrats joke mentioning every ethnic group.

/Not the lame fark punchline 'the aristocrats', but the in-joke comedian standard 'the aristocrats'.  See the very entertaining movie on this if you are confused.

FTA:  Baca "wants to remind everyone this is a comedian," Whitmore said. "No one in the department would say this."

Beautiful. Baca's deflection is a lovely example of the old guard. "Sure, we think that, but we wouldn't say that, not out loud where we could get dinged for it - but this guy? Hey, he's just a comedian, not a cop. He can say whatever he wants, and we're going to laugh our asses off because he gets to say it!"

I'm betting Baca's actually surprised that other folks, fellow sheriffs, complained.  We're watching the old guard getting whacked for inappropriate behavior by the new guard. That almost gives me hope.
