I wish there were some clever way I could express how I cannot abide this, but alas it cannot be done.

I can't go for that.

/no can do

So it's a hipster conversation about the actual Hall and Oates, not a conversation about the hipster girl Hall and Oates.

I'm gonna see them at Outside Lands, so I'm really getting a kick...

Also, "Live from Daryl's House" has some pretty good stuff.

My brother got me hooked on that show.  I was never a big Hall and Oats fan until then either.

I was expecting a thread about those two chicks that sing about having sex with ducks.

Well hipsters like lame music, so why is this a surprise?

Were you using them for something?

Now they've gone too far

But you know it don't matter anyway.

Uh, I would have categorized everyone that ever listened to hall and oats as hipster. Christ, the line up of thin, bearded, granola crunching dudes is a billion miles long on that one and ALWAYS has been.

Little girl what's your name?  Now don't you go looking at me like that you might see I'm  insane.  What's your name?  Damn you, talk to me.  Damn you, talk to me.  Will you survive?  Learn to drive?  Yeah.  Pervert song.  Nice.

they were HUGE when i was a kid, and i enjoyed their music and videos...and i still enjoy their music

Given that Yacht Rock was about a decade ago, I'd say someone is late to the party.

Their big hits aside, Hall and Oates started out as a really credible blue eyed soul group in the early 70s. Check out them performing with the Temptations at Live Aid if you don't believe me.

It is ironically "hilarious" to pretend that garbage is great. See also Sharknado.

Rich Girl was one of my favourite songs when I was five (the others were Hotel California and Blinded By the Light). My mom had Hall and Oates on constant rotation back then. I've grown quite fond of them.

Sara Smile equals greatness for Hall & Oates.

Eh, this generation is going back and discovering that there was good music before 1992 instead of obsessing over whether Vitalology is a great album or the greatest album ever. I could see why people would be mad at that.

2013-07-26 07:17:58 AM
I don't understand, why would you want to listen to anything other than Tool and Japanese video game sound tracks?

I hope good music pre-92 doesn't include Hall and farkin Oates.

Wall_of_Doodoo: 'Man-Eater' is a really bad song, but, Daryl Hall's hair is inspirational. I say Oates first solo single on Letterman about 25 years ago. Still the worst song I've ever heard, ever. I have no desire to hear it ever again, screw nostalgia, it was terrible, terrible stuff.

That should've been the song for my first dance with my ex-wife.

That show is great! Daryl did a few dates with Allen Stone and Sharon Jones last year and brought out a set that looked just like the barn. I saw them in Boston and they were quite good. I was never really a fan before Daryl's tv show.

I'm not a hipster. I have a mortgage, two kids, a wife, and Old Navy clothes...although I do think music still sounds best on vinyl, maaaaaaaan.

I just came in to say that the Bird and the Bee cover album mentioned in TFA is very good.

Yes!  Rich Girl is a great song. My band covered it for a bit 10 years ago and it always went over we'll. Except for that one time this hipster girl says to us "you know, those aren't the actual chords of the song".

Just what the world wanted: Hall and Oates made to sound even whiter.

When they headlined Googa Mooga last year and a Prospect Park full of young folks stood up to get down, all I could do was shake my head. And dance.

If you don't like Hall and Oates give a listen to their early album 'War Babies'.  It was produced by Todd Rundgren and it is excellent.  'Johnny Gore and the C Eaters' is a great song as is 'Screaming Through December'.

I just put on Whole Oates, and it's obviously that their light rock/soul thing is a real big influence on a lot of the white-boy singers (Robin Thicke?) out there today.

Music is always going back and finding new influences in old stuff.  And kids are always looking for something that pisses their parents off.  If mom and dad love grunge or hard rock, Hall and Oates is going to do the trick.

My sisters fiancee is a huge fan. He has been for many years, and he's only 31. He has already taken her to see them in concert twice. And custom made shoes with their design on them. I'm going to enjoy pointing this out and calling him a hipster.

I don't think there's anything you can say to insult a man who owns shoes with Hall & Oates on them. He's past all that now.

About ten years ago I was at a party at an art collective behind a gallery (yeah, I know) and they kept playing Hall and Oates - ironically of course.  I had already figured out a few things about irony, this being one of them:  when you're ironically enjoying crap you're still enjoying crap.  The irony of listening to Hall and Oates doesn't absolve you of listening to bad music anymore than an ironic bank robbery absolves you of the crime of bank robbery.

2013-07-26 09:02:15 AM
I enjoy Hall and Oates. I'm 27 but not a hipster.

I find hipsters to actually be pretty mean to non hipsters when found in large groups. They always seem arrogant and act as they're so much more intelligent.

2013-07-26 09:03:29 AM
Liked them enough to go to their concert in the 80's, they were just plain fun. Still are. Picked up a greatest hits cd at a garage sale the other week and it's been blaring out of my car since then.  But really you can attribute the love to the really awesome "Live From Daryl's House" covers. Bruce Willis' daughter Rumer does an awesome duet with Daryl.

I listened to a Hall and Oates CD on my way into work this morning, so kicks, etc.

Touche'. But I can enjoy telling my sister she is marrying a hipster. :)
