Maybe they are "gifting" them memories so they are more emotionally mature, thus, easier to control..

By manipulating the memory engram-bearing cells in the hippocampus, the research team convinced a few unsuspecting mice that they had experienced a shock to their feet when one had never actually occurred.

This is why scientists are portrayed as evil in pop culture. That is the false memory you implant? Why not false memories of getting mouse laid?

DarkSoulNoHope: I wouldn't mind someone LARPing this, looks like fun. Though how do we create the sucking energy that would get someone out of a Warp Bubble?!

No, no. For Remember Me, you're LARPing putting your palm to the back of someone's head and overloading their memory banks until there's a blowout. Or altering someone's memories so that they remember killing a loved one who is in fact perfectly healthy. Or putting voices in someone's head.

Honestly, that is Mind Rape: The Video Game.

some of the best moments of that show were with Scorpius in John's head

I always loved the episode when John was interrogated by the Scarren and thought he was back on Earth.

Science_Guy_3.14159: I met the lead scientists doing this at the TED talks in Boston. It was pretty interesting, they were primarily focused on removing bad memories but have also been doing some research in altering current memories. They weren't completely changing the memory just making changes to the emotions tied to that memory.

Sorry we can't get rid of your memories of being brutally ass raped by Father Patrick, but we can make it so you remember enjoying the hell out of it.

Underwater Bystander: Once this is perfected for humans life will become some kind of waking nightmare where you can never know what's real.

Even if you've never had memories implanted or removed how would you know for sure? How could you ever trust anything again?

I can remember things for you wholesale.

I don't recall Inception really having more trumpets than some other movies, like The Matrix. I think BWAAAM is an implanted memory.

My first thought is that it has to do with testability.  If a rat remembers getting shocked when it does a particular action, then it will tend to avoid repeating that action.  That should result in a behavioral change that is easy to measure.  How would you predict and measure the change in a rat's behavior resulting from getting laid?
