By giving abandoned babies to childless couples?  I'll try to manufacture some rage, but don't know if I can be bothered to care that much.

Agreed. I think the end result, giving a home to poor, abandoned infants, far outweighs the creepy exploitation factor. Besides, have you seen the utterly soulless, exploitative crap that passes for daytime television in this country?

Pakistan is considered a conservative Muslim country and children born out of wedlock are condemned.

The crime is punishable by death under strict interpretations of Islamic law, but hundreds of babies, especially girls, are abandoned every month.

And under Pakistani law, anyone found to have abandoned an infant will face seven years behind bars.

Hmmm, 7 years or death....  And they wonder why they have so many abandoned babbies.

/cunning plan, not completely thought out

However, the article was poorly-written at the point where it talked about the penalty for baby abandonment under strict Islamic law and then what one could expect under Pakistani law... made it sound like the parents got seven years in prison and the baby was executed.  It seemed a little harsh, but given a lot of the stories we've been exposed to about that part of the world, eminently believable.

Surprising how callous this thread has been.

Game show aspect aside, this should be a Republican touchstone. If you don't want (or allow) abortions then you need to have people lining up to adopt. I've made this point before, if you don't want abortion you need to make a culture where every baby is wanted and everyone wanting a baby can get one without importing.

The stories I have heard about adoption agencies seems like the basis of a scam. It's all about getting fees and hope out of marks. It simply shouldn't be that hard to get a baby.

Correct! It's easy to get a baby. I've spent lots of money and effort to NOT get a baby. Or wife.

Am I the only on surprised we haven't had a show like this in the U.S. yet?   I mean, get a bunch of couples who want to adopt for various reasons, find a mother who wants to give the child away.  Really not much worse than "The Bachelor" really, and the process wouldn't be that much different than how it goes anyway, except televised.

/and weekly "Sorry, your pacifier will not be sucked" ceremonies

brantgoose: I presume the cause of death will be boredom.

Just kidding. I've lived in the country. It is not the healthy grave you might assume it is.

Car deaths? They all drive like they are the only vehicle on the road. And there's a whole lot more road. You have to drive 25 miles to get to a grocery store, a doctor, a dentist, a hardware store--and they may not even be in the same town. Country people spend a lot more time on the road. In fact, where I come from the expression "running the roads together" means that two people are a couple or very good friends.

As for black people, we don't have any where I come from so I can't comment on that item. Well, none to speak of. I saw a couple in my nephew's high school year book, and the McCains have an apartment building full of computer programmers from India or possibly Pakistan.  But that is it. There's an old joke which goes "What do you call a black guy in Alberta?" "Tourist".

Then there is education and wealth. I haven't got a large sample to work with, but I expect that educated and rich people in the country suffer from more injuries and accidental deaths because they drive even further to better stores, doctors, dentists, etc. And they ski and golf and hunt and fish more. In fact, they do all sorts of things more than the poor people, and they take bigger risks. And some of the bastards have private aircraft. I don't know about jumbo jets, but small airplanes are scary. They are the ones that always go down in the wilderness. When was the last time you read about a 747 or 787 crashing in the middle of nowhere? Well, you've read about a lot of small airplane crashes since then.

And let's not forget recreational vehicles. The welfare people may have a yard full of cars and snowmobiles and ATVs but how many of them are paid for and how many work? Ha! There's the catch. Rich people have motorboats and airplanes and all sorts of toys that can hurt you or kill you.

One of my co-workers dinging himself up pretty bad in b ...

What the hell are you talking about? I had to read the whole thing just to be certain it wasn't somehow related to this thread.
