Ms. Jones was also in charge of making hoecakes, the cornmeal pancakes served to every guest. Ms. Deen had designed a station so diners could watch them being made. At both jobs, Mrs. Charles and other employees said, Ms. Deen wanted Ms. Jones to dress in an old-style Aunt Jemima outfit.

Honestly, I kind of hoped that she was the kind of racist that grew up bigoted until she realized that it was indeed bigotry, but was struggling to try to change herself. That person I can feel sorry for, because it's hard getting over something that one was taught from childhood however wrong it is.

Unfortunately she appears to be the kind of racist that makes her racism become other peoples' problems, rather than the kind that struggles to keep it to herself.

Paula Deen was raking in millions while paying the cook only $10/hr.  To try to make the cook dress like 'Mammy' on top of such low wages is just insult to injury.

2013-07-25 07:24:03 PM
I wouldn't necessarily assume she's "racist" -- in the sense of "believes whites to be naturally superior to blacks." But I would say that she has an unhealthy romantic idealization of the Antebellum south. I think she just assumes every black person below the Mason-Dixon line since 1840 was as jolly and non-judgmental as Uncle Remus.

So...racist asked cook to dress up like character invented by racists to sell flavored corn syrup.

I grew up in a small, Southern city that was 99% white (that may be off a number or two, if you're curious it's Poquoson, Virginia). When the city lines were drawn back in the 1970s, they were drawn specifically to exclude the one black family and church that would have otherwise been in the city and gone to the schools I went to. By the time I lived in the area in the 1990s, there was one black teacher in the middle school, and one of mixed race in the high school and also a black janitor. As far as I know, all were quite beloved, especially the janitor. But what I didn't make the connection to until sometime later was that while other teachers were called "Mrs." the the black and mixed-race teacher were called "Mama"+last name. And the janitor was called by his first name, which was very unusual. If I were to guess, I am not sure that most students called the teachers Mama to their face, and I didn't have either of the teachers. But it wasn't like it was a secret, either. It's what I remember people calling the teachers when referring to them, if not directly addressing them. And it didn't seem offensive at the time.

There was some sort of fondness, though, I think. I'm not exactly sure. But I was reminded of it by the Aunt Jemima pictures.

There was also a teacher who was perceived to be racist, and the students (behind her back) would call her "Massa"+last name. She kind of deserved it.

In general I don't think that would be an issue.  It's closer to the borderline asking a black person to dress up as a black caricature, but it's done for legitimate theater, so I'm sure it's done with no ill-will in dinner theater as well.

What I think crosses this over the line is Deen's recently brought-to-light history of racism.  Someone known to tolerate and perpetuate racism asking someone to do something like that makes the situation seem more offensive.

swingerofbirches: TheDumbBlonde: swingerofbirches: I grew up in a small, Southern city that was 99% white (that may be off a number or two, if you're curious it's Poquoson, Virginia).

You do realize that Savannah is absolutely NOTHING like that. Right?

In that it is more mixed race? More racist? Less racist? I haven't been to Savannah. But I would imagine most Southern cities are more diverse than Poquoson.

I'm not local to Savannah, but the leadership of this town is black. Mayor, city council, chief of police, city manager. Public housing projects built cheek-to-jowl to very expensive and sometimes historic neighborhoods. (I mean the next block). I could be wrong, but it would seem to have been a great idea to integrate schools and such, but now, no one that can reasonable afford to would subject their children to the public schools. On any given weekend, there is a black person shooting another person(s). It seems like the city fathers chose to ignore the problem and the white people simply keep their mouths shut to avoid looking racist.

The sense I got from reading that article was that she had very fond memories of growing up and was trying to recreate those memories without understanding just how destructive that environment was to everyone who wasn't her or her family. I agree with the previous poster who theorized that she's completely oblivious about all of this, but not malevolently racist.

I think you got it wrong.. from my personal observation I think people tend to get more racist as they get older not the other way around. The only difference being that because older people have less adrenaline and are generally 'gentler' doesn't mean their views or heart has change for the better.

Well, I'm 53 years old and was born and raised in Tennessee, and I'm not racist. Growing up in the South doesn't automatically mean you're racist, you know. In fact, there are plenty of racists who've never set foot in the South.  Deen was raised by people who instilled these ideas and beliefs into her, either deliberately or inadvertently, and she never questioned or realized they were racist.

That person I can feel sorry for, because it's hard getting over something that one was taught from childhood however wrong it is.

Unfortunately she appears to be the kind of racist that makes her racism become other peoples' problems, rather than the kind that struggles to keep it to herself.

Paula Deen: Cook; tv personality. Searching for a way to tap into the hidden hungers that all humans have. Then an accidental overdose of butter alters her body chemistry. And now when Paula Deen grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs. The creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter. [Deen:] "Mr. Rowles, don't make me racist. You wouldn't like me when I'm racist." The creature is wanted for a HR offenses she didn't commit. Paula Deen is believed to be dead, and she must let the world think that she is dead, until she can find a way to control the racist spirit that dwells within her.

All the white people trying their hardest to be outraged over this should realize that what they are really concerned with is their own sense of self-righteousness and how other people see them. Dude, even I know that Aunt Jemima is a racist caricature, and I had to look up the word "mammy" because I had never encountered it used with regards to race relations.

This might not have been a case of malevolent racism. It may have just been Paula Deen being a dumbass. The problem is that dumbassery like this is still racist. Allow me to give you a couple of examples:

A.) I believe that black men are morally and intellectually inferior to white men, and that their natural station in life is one of subservience to white people. I attribute all of the crime, violence, broken families, and poverty that black people deal with to them just not being capable on a biological level of participating in civilized society; I think that they were better off as slaves.

B.) I grew up in Greenwich, CT, and I went to Eton for high school. My image of young black men has been almost entirely shaped by the media. So, when I see a young black man walking toward me on the sidewalk in New York, I cross the street. I also marvel at how articulate the President is.

Now, multiple choice time. In which example am I racist?

A.) A

B.) B

or

C.) All of the above.

/I'll give you a hint
//it's Fark

Shiat! I hate coming in late to posts like this. However, some of us actually work.

I was born in the early 50's, and, before I was one, was moved to Florida. (I come from New Jersey.) I landed in a small town not even on the map. Yet, it is in a book. (The Boy in the Model T.)

Segregation was in full swing as I was growing up. My folks had an equal rights policy, which didn't make them all that popular with some folks. My parents never said a racist noun concerning black people. They never ranted on and on about black people. They did not like the fact that going into banks, black folks stepped out of line to let the white folks in, that there were separate bathrooms, separate sections in restaurants, separate schools and all blacks lived in separate communities.

I guess around 1956 or 57 I started paying attention to things going on around me. In short order I learned about white trash, hillbillies, how some folks were still fighting the civil war and these lean, mean looking white men -- poor but proud -- who settled things with their fists, tried to drink the county dry every Friday and kept the cops busy. I met their kids, who promptly taught me how to swear, stole almost anything not tied down, usually smoked by age 8, tended to settle arguments with their fists had these enormously fat mothers with cankles and periodically showed up with bruises from when 'Dad' disciplined them.

That's when I learned the assorted names for black people -- along with names for Damn Yankees (like me), the few foreign kids, the local police and any kid (male) who acted effeminate, couldn't play baseball or couldn't fight. Since my family history has a dash of Polish in it along with Italian, I heard every Polish and 'WOP' joke there was.

I met the 'rich' kids, who dressed and acted differently from everyone else. I met the early Surfers, along with the 'Greasers' -- who had transmission fluid for blood.

I'm aware of employees working in the homes of the wealthy who have been asked to dress in various forms of garb. Especially French maid. I know of butlers who would be caught dead without their full three piece suit on. I know of bars and restaurants where the workers are required to dress in various ways. Like Hooters.

I know of people, of all races, who have made their money off their peons' ideas or efforts and neither gave them raises or recognition. (The guy who invented piston rings was told to knock it off and get back to work. He was nearly fired for presenting his idea and it was several years before it was accepted and implemented.)

I developed a new way to keep track of freight we shipped off in plastic bags when I was a courier for Airborne Express. I was neither recognized for it nor given a raise. Yet, it saved the subcontractors hundreds of dollars.

This thing is not race specific.

When I did private medical duty for some very rich folks, I had to park my battered old car in the back. They didn't want it seen out in front. I was required to wear a white uniform also, especially when driving them about, like for shopping and taking them to their club. At the club, I had to wait in their car, reading and checking the entrance frequently for an hour or so. When they emerged, they expected me to drive up and be there within a few minutes.

I grew up with Aunt Jemima Syrup. Also the black 'mammy' on Tom and Jerry cartoons. I never considered the way they dressed to be demeaning. Actually, being familiar with the many Civil War reenactments, where players strove to be as accurate as possible in their costumes, I never thought about it either way. Actually, I considered Aunt Jemima Syrup as one of the Quality Products out there.

Plus in the Tom and Jerry cartoons, the black cook was an authority figure.

I think folks need to get their heads out of their arses concerning Paula Deen.

BTW, I saw and loved 'Song of the South and Uncle Remus. None of us kids condisered him anything but a nice, elderly black guy. I also saw performances by Amos and Andy and they cracked me up. They cracked all of us kids up.

However, the NAACP has decided that both shows are racist and both are banned. They cast black people in a bad light. Yet I've watched many a gangsta show with mainly black leads who cast black people in a worse light than those previous programs ever did.

Discrimination is NOT relegated to black people alone.

twat_waffle: eatin' fetus: Racism is not asking a black woman to dress like Aunt Jemima. All the white people trying their hardest to be outraged over this should realize that what they are really concerned with is their own sense of self-righteousness and how other people see them. This bit of news is merely another way for you to seemingly prop yourselves above the average white person.

White guilt does a real disservice to everyone involved. You're turning what should be a mixed society into a tribal one with your ridiculous insecurities.

//it's Fark

Not totally sure where you were going with that.

The entire premise of my post was to illustrate how people who profess their white guilt are in fact dividing society in an attempt to make themselves appear holier than thou. In my opinion, that behavior is incredibly pretentious and rarely called out for what it is.

It's like walking up to a black person and saying "Black people have had it so bad, I totally get it". Stop this bullshiat. You don't get it, you never will, and the sooner you stop using this as a vaguely disguised ego-booster, the sooner black people will have a chance to be just as obnoxious as you.

The outspoken members of the white liberal society are the true segregationists.

Tulsa man was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in last month's deaths of a Calumet mother and her 5-year-old son.  Prosecutors allege Posey forcibly raped Gibbins and struck her on the head. They allege that after killing her, Posey set her house on fire. Bryor was in the house and died in the blaze, according to court documents.
Firefighters discovered the bodies about 4:40 a.m. after extinguishing the flames.

Then the Internet became more and more popular... Facebook in particular was an eye-opening experience for me and a lot of my friends. Our parents (and even some of our friends) turned out to be pretty darn racist the whole time. It just took a bit of Internet bravery for them to feel comfortable letting it show. I was curious about this claim.  So a quick google shows you completely made it up, and it is wildly false.   But I'm sure if I spouted complete lies about how 95% of all killers are black, you would consider that racist. Think about that a moment.  Though I seriously doubt you will.

From  http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/serial-murder

"Contrary to popular belief, serial killers span all racial groups. There are white, African-American, Hispanic, and Asian serial killers. The racial diversification of serial killers generally mirrors that of the overall U.S. population.

• Charles Ng, a native of Hong Kong, China, killed numerous victims in Northern California, in concert with Robert Lake.

• Derrick Todd Lee, an African-American, killed at least six women in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

• Coral Eugene Watts, an African-American, killed five victims in Michigan, fled the state to avoid detection, and murdered another 12 victims in Texas, before being apprehended.

• Rafael Resendez-Ramirez, a native of Mexico, murdered nine people in Kentucky, Texas, and Illinois, before turning himself in.

• Rory Conde, a Colombian native, was responsible for six prostitute homicides in the Miami, Florida area."

I mean, I get the negative implications of this image:

[24.media.tumblr.com image 482x600]

But quite honestly, I think the Mammy version is more attractive.  The new version is just farkin' disturbing.  I'd date the old Aunt Jemima, but I'd be too freaked out by the face of the new one.

For me the most ironic part of the way they updated the image of Jemima to be 'less racist' is that they narrowed her nose and thinned her lips. I assume that's supposed to make her more attractive and thus less mammy-like, but.....yeah kinda mixed message there.

And to really make some Farker's head explode, Texas did not sentence him to death.  Not only that, they released him.  Fortunately, he was extradited to Michigan upon his release where he died in prison.

"She's fifty years old and was born and raised in Georgia.  How the hell can anyone think that she's NOT racist?"

/Props to you.  You know who you are.

My aged grandmother was born in West Virginia in 1916. She is not as racist as Paula Deen.

My grandmother was born in East Bumfark, Alabama around the same time give or take a year, and she was not racist at all, to my knowledge.I never heard a racist word or even an ethnic joke out of her mouth or Mom's.

It's not about where you were born, or even where you grew up. It's how you were raised.

I was on my phone, hence brevity.

The point here is age is not a factor; nor location of birth. All this b/s about how Paula Deen is an "older woman" and "raised in the South" so she can't help her "racist culture" or whatever--it's all pure, 100% unadulterated bullcrap. I'm almost 50, so watch the "older woman" thingy, first of all--anyone under 80 has grown up since WWII and anyone under 60 has lived their whole life since segregation was banned in all 50 states; so pretending we don't at least comprehend that overt racism is a no-no is getting into snorkel territory with the fecal matter.

Second, where you were born, raised, lived, died, reincarnated, is irrelevant in a global society, since it's been proven right here on Fark that you can live in the depths of multiculti and be as lily-white racist as any Aryan ever spawned, or tolerant even in the snowy depths of Alaska. And finally, racism isn't defined in a single act of brutality (like a half-white half-Hispanic man killing an African-American boy) or a single word (like a white woman calling a black robber a n*gger). Racism is defined in the way a person lives their whole life. A person might never use a single derogatory racist term and treat minorities with surface respect and yet be racist to the bone; and it might be possible for another person to use casual racial slurs and yet be more supportive of minorities than his so-called "tolerant" neighbors.

This haste to examine every individual action or word and declare it "racist" in a vacuum has led to the mess that got us the Zimmerman trial--Zimmerman may well have been a racist; but he's more an idiot who shouldn't be allowed out loose on the street. Deen may be a racist, but it isn't because of any single thing she's done or said--her whole persona screams noblesse oblige and patronage towards the "help" and picking out examples of her evil racism glosses over the greater harm she's done with her folksy surface charm and Southern butteryness. Bullying her colored servants into playacting house n*gger so she could pretend to be Scarlett O'Hara bespeaks a greater racism than any word or action Deen might say. What's sad is that it took so long for anyone to notice.

He never stated that 100% of serial killers in the U.S. are white.

The percentage isn't 95%, but it's certainly over 80%. Excerpt from a 2009 Psychology Today article:

Statistically, more than 80% serial killers are white males, but it does not suggest that being a white male makes the person 80% more likely to become a serial killer, because the absolute frequency is so low.

TuteTibiImperes: Z1P2: So, for a dinner theatre, someone was asked to wear a costume, the horror!! I'm getting awefully sick and tired of the daily 'that's racist' crap.

Yeah i ain't buying it that she's racist. I just have too many brain cells left to buy into that bullshiat.

Vectron: Why don't you guys give the Deen topic a rest for awhile and ponder if this guy is racist?

Tulsa man was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in last month's deaths of a Calumet mother and her 5-year-old son.  Prosecutors allege Posey forcibly raped Gibbins and struck her on the head. They allege that after killing her, Posey set her house on fire. Bryor was in the house and died in the blaze, according to court documents.
Firefighters discovered the bodies about 4:40 a.m. after extinguishing the flames.

Who knows? Did he call her a cracker before he raped and murdered her? If so, could be. Are these people who probably made up a story about their baby being shot in the face by mystery black teens racist?

2013-07-26 07:01:28 AM
I think Paula Deen has been so insulated from society by her money and inner circle that she honestly doesn't know what she did could be viewed as extremely offensive. She lives in a little bubble she made for herself. It's probably very comfortable in there for her.  I don't think she's a bad lady, but she is a somewhat selfish and very ignorant one. If she spent some time away from her yes men and more time out and about with actual real people, she'd come around fairly quickly.

Paula probably has this fantasy about being Scarlett O'Hara.
She longs to return to the old plantation days of her youth.

It gets better:  Several well-endowed black slaves/sharecroppers and their white overseer/boss happen on the scene (which is happening in the kitchen, of course), and Claudia Marie/Paula Deen takes all the black guys on at the same time (with copious amounts of butter, of course), while the white guy gets the BBW/Mammy.

So that means most of them are white. The US is 72% white per the 2010 census.

Yep.

But that's not shocking or informative in any real way.  It's like saying most left-handed people in the US are white, or most poor people are white.  You'd be shocked if that *WASN'T* the case.

Actually she's in her mid 60s so, yeah there's no surprise here. Also nothing that prevents her from being a good cook and being the front for a moneymaking machine, which kept a bunch of people of all races employed until recently. Not to be an apologist for Mrs. Deen, but it sounds like this downfall is 10% Mrs. Deen's racism and 90% institutionalized racial discrimination. From a business standpoint it's her inside counsel and business advisers that should take most of the blame.

Nail on the farking head, and that's precisely the sort of thing that I encounter quite a bit of down here. The Old South in general is glorified with a lot of people who think of it as  Gone With the Wind rather than the harsh reality it was, and while it's okay to cling to certain things like the fashion and architecture and even the cuisine, a lot of people take it a bit too far in keeping a very similar attitude to what you described above and not realizing just how racist that is. And really... You don't have to use a single slur or burn any crosses for that to be horribly racist.

The attitude that Deen had toward her black workers in general reflects that she thought of them more as "the help" than a valued partner. This woman who she referred to as her "soul sister" and who even helped her develop some of the recipes that made Deen rich and famous was paid $10 an hour and was living in a beaten up trailer, but the Deen family in general were looking at the situation as if to say, "We don't see what the problem is. We're taking good care of her." Truth is, they weren't paying her what she was worth. They were paying her just as much as they could get away with while doing little favors here and there to keep her dependent upon them. That's not how you view a partner who should be able to be financially independent. That's how you view the live-in help.

If you really miss it that much, it's a standard Southern banana pudding recipe that women in my family have been making since well before we heard of Paula Deen. You can even find it online, and it's insanely easy to customize should you feel creative.

The operative word was "single," which is more obvious when you read the rest of the selection you quoted. The person who said that wasn't saying that she'd never done anything racist. The poster was saying that one incident on its own doesn't make Deen a racist, but rather a compilation of many things she's done in addition to her attitude in general. Again, that becomes more apparent as you read the rest of what was said beyond the first half of the first sentence.
