This morning the little biddies flew up to the training roost and stood around up there grooming. For some reason it reminded me of the girls bathroom in high school. I should put a mirror up for them! It takes a lot of skill to stand up there and straighten all of their new little feathers. Some fell when they tried it.

OMG!  That would be a hilarious!  Of course they would also need a teeny tiny little Justin Bieber picture too!

NONONONO Bieber!  I play radio for them set to NPR or Classical music, I hope the birds will mature to lay better and more nutritious eggs!
For your morning coffee movie: Little hens staring at a wall, I'm not sure why they do this, they will stand and peck at the holes in the wall. Maybe there are insects behind it that I cannot see. Maybe they are dumb. One of the little hens is a dreamer and will fly to the doorway and stare at the outside world. It is like a wormhole to another universe for her. she is not quite ready to make the leap but I expect she will any day now. She has some back up, but the possibility of exploring the universe doesn't hold their attention very long, they soon go back to pecking at the wall or grooming on the roost. Little Frodo must be a rooster, the girls just swarm around him and he stands there looking confused. He hasn't jumped to the roost or to the wormhole yet.
Enjoy

With the heat and humidity the boys seem to be doing OK, I found a new pellet for them that has much higher fat content and it is a larger softer pellet so Castle has an easier time eating.

I noticed mountain looking a bit heat stressed yesterday so I brought him over by the hose and sprayed him down. He enjoys the hose but Castle is as bad as Fiona and I have to be careful with all three of them trying to get in the water at the same time. At one point Mountain was scratching his back on a convenient tree limb and I was hosing down Castle, all of a sudden Castle jumped up, swerved around me, jumped over the hose and ran into the paddock. Mountain was already there so I think Mountain got stung or spooked and Castle spooked with him. I was impressed with his agility and kindness. He could have ran over me. He left a huge crater in the ground where his back hoof launched from. He managed to get around me, the dog, and the hose. Good boy.

Electricians will be here Tuesday to replace my service. I need to spend some time today clearing the areas around where they'll be working.
I'd like to run my generator while they're here but I have nowhere to safely ground it that won't put them at risk of a zapping.

Meanwhile, since a considerable portion of Caturday participants seem to qualify for "get off my lawn" privileges (myself included), and I don't know how many of you venture out to the main page, I thought I would bring your attention to this photographic record of life in America in the early '70's (currently posted on the FarkUs tab). Having grown up in NYC during that period, I found it mesmerizing. Even if you did not live in one of the locations highlighted, it is a real trip down memory lane. (Cigarettes $3.99/carton, beer $1.15/six pack, cars that were not made of plastic, to say nothing of the clothes - WTF were we thinking?)

At one time my poor little tractor, Earl, got caught up in a tennis match. In no time at all he went from being a perfectly functional old tractor, to wearing groucho glasses, up on blocks and driven by a princess in an ugly hat! And after all that I cannot find pictures of it, but it sure was fun.

Tennis match has been saved ... all of them..

Hi everyone, been away a bit and with packing and whatnot, totally missed last week and have been since I got home yesterday catching up (spotty at best cell service, and a VERY basic data plan kept me mostly off-line).  Another lot of sad this week, and to those whose cats have crossed the bridge in the last couple of weeks... It's hard right now to try to focus on the good memories and fun times, but try, over time that's what sticks with you.  And a few seem to need to find some better doctors...
maynerdkitty, I'm really enjoying the chicks updates!  I've half been thinking of getting a couple, my daughter had a week of riding camp earlier this Summer, and she was at least as interested in the chicks and hens as the horses(!)
I tried to find it from a few weeks ago but couldn't, and to the photographer, my apologies.  But I was very inspired by some hummingbird pictures a few weeks ago, and well the place we were staying at had a couple of hummingbird feeders, and after a little experimentation, was able to capture these ruby throated hummingbirds:
this is a female...

We also had a group of young ducks come by nearly every day...

one day there were as many as 10 (!)

and this was the view from the canoe on my morning paddle...

looking though the viewfinder the first thing I though was 'hey that'd make a good Windows desktop... I need to get out more, lol.

Thanks, sherpa18!  I was only 4 in 1973, growing up in the Pacific Northwest, but I remember my dad telling stories of being a gas jockey in those days (one of three jobs he had to work to make ends meet, including engineer for the city and working in a local Shakey's pizza parlor) and the gas lines / shortages...
