Siamese/tabby domestic short hair. He's about 15 pounds but he's got a really large frame so "a healthy weight" according to his vet. I'm currently in the market for a Savannah Cat...I like big kitties!

lohphat: Spiralmonkey: My boy is feeling the heat...

[25.media.tumblr.com image 850x634]

Shave. Him.

Srsly.

I had Persians and after I took them to the vet and had them shaved down to about 1/4" they perked up and didn't suffer the heat.

It also reduced hairball events drastically.

It got to the point where they were so more comfortable, they even liked to get baths. Not kidding.

I would love to but unfortunately he associates shaving/trimming with bad memories of surgery and it completely freaks him out. We tried it a few times and he is so distressed by it that it seems crueller to shave than not shave. Not just the act of being shaved either, the whole time his coat is short he doesn't like it. As it is we're in Scotland there's not too many days when it gets too hot for him and if it does he has a cool bathroom with a running tap to retire to and wait out the heat.

He's normally such a laid back little guy but that is the one thing that truly distresses him. We had an enormous thunder storm yesterday, went on for over an hour, he lay on the windowledge watching the lightning, no qualms whatsoever. Ditto fireworks. Bring out a pet trimmer? Better bring out some kitty valium at the same time.

me too... I used to have a half himalayan ginger tuxedo cat named Possum who weighed about the same as your fellow does.  Duff, the son of two of my cats, is a big chubby and fluffy boy.  My daughter has him now.  He's a cuddlebug, so is his dad, Boots, but Booty isn't quite as splendiforously large as his son.

We used to use the purina indoor and switched to the purina naturals, and then to a fancy expensive grain free kibble, which caused one of ours to lose weight, and switched back to the purina naturals.  I don't think it's much more expensive than the indoor, but I think ours prefer it.

ruetheday69: I  noticed there are a lot of Ohio-based Farkers who are also involved in cat rescue. I have a small problem. A few months ago a stray cat that lives around my apt building had a litter of 4 kittens. I'd like to grab two of them for myself and figure out what to do with the others, which includes the mother and the big tom who is the probable father. None of them will let me near them but I have been leaving out food and hanging around the food and am seeing some progress there. They seem in general good health other than being hungry. Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you been feeding the kitties so they get to know you and get used to coming to a certain spot?

You can use a humane raccoon trap to trap them and work with a local rescue to get them neutered and adopted out. Mommy and Daddy may not take to socialization so you may have to let them go after sterilization.

logieal: A CHALLENGER APPEARS

[i521.photobucket.com image 640x480]

She's got a better mustache. Plus she super friendly and a bit of an attention whore. Doesn't matter if you just showed up and are jumping off the walls. She wants to meet you and have you pet her.

Plus her name is Stache. So there's that.

[i521.photobucket.com image 640x481]
[i521.photobucket.com image 640x481]

She's the exact opposite of a fraidy cat.
Of course, right now she looks a little funny because we shaved her down except for her tail, of which she's very proud, because the dog we have likes to drag her around by the scruff around her neck and it makes her all matted.

[i521.photobucket.com image 850x478]

But she doesn't mind, or at least if she does, she doesn't do anything about it other than jumping up on the couch or over to the side of the house where the dog can't go. I think I've only heard her hiss once. And that was when she was super scared because there were 3 dogs fighting over her (two Minpins and our Doxie).
Our 1.5 year old has literally used her as a play mat and I've seen him purposely fall on her because he thinks it's funny. We of course tell him no, but that hardly helps when the cat doesn't mind and won't leave.

Stache is beautiful!!!!  :D

DoomsDayAardvark: As many of you are already aware, I have some very sad news to relate this week, but I'll relate the story for everyone.

Tuesday evening, my sweet little Kay began to yowl in pain, and then vomit.  He did this twice before he decided to go to his hidey-spot under the basement steps.  After a little while, he came out, looking like he didn't feel very good.  I was lying on the basement floor with him for a little while, when he yowled and vomited again.  At that point, I decided it was time to take him to the vet, but since it was after 10, his regular vet was closed.  Fortunately, I live quite close to a 24-hour emergency vet clinic.  He was admitted almost instantly.

They did some x-rays, and some other tests, and couldn't find anything definitive.  They gave him some anti-nausea medication, but it did nothing for him, so they decided they should keep him overnight for pain medication and observation.  I got home around 2 in the morning without him.  I snapped this pic as I said good night to him.

[i445.photobucket.com image 480x640]
/side note...This woman is a  saint

Wednesday morning, I was awakened by a call from the emergency vet saying that Kay had taken a turn for the worse, and that I should come see him.  He hung on just long enough for me to get there, and have about 10 minutes to say goodbye.  I held his paw as he took his last breath and drifted away.

[i445.photobucket.com image 640x480]

I spent much of the rest of the day sobbing.

For a long time, I've used writing as a coping technique.  I prepared this obituary for Kay to help myself through it.  (Don't everybody click that link at once -- my host probably can't take a farking).  It helped, but it still hurts.

Many of you have already written kind words on Facebook and in emails.  I cannot thank you all enough for the love and support you've shown me in the last few days.  There are so many of you that to try to list you all individually is doomed to failure -- the list of who hasn't expresse ...

There are no words that can heal your heart. Kay was a beautiful cat and your love for each other was amazing. I wish all cats could be so lucky.

micromedic: Good Morning fine folk!!
I have a long post, sorry...
First of all, DoomsDayAardvark, the micromedic household wishes to extend their deepest sorrow at the loss of Kay. We send hugs of comfort, share your sorrow and there are gentle purrs and head bumps on their way to you! Kay is already missed.

hokay... now for the long post. Kitty kitty, our "house panther" bull rushed the back door about 2-3 months ago and was missing. I was sure he was close, but as time went by, my hope dimmed. I missed my kitty! On Wednesday night. after dark, mr. micromedic came into the house and insisted I go outside!! It was Kitty Kitty!!! He came back!! After some food, coaxing (a lot of coaxing) he came in to the house!! I am EXSTATIC!!! I just couldn't be mad.... I just wanted him back. Thank Bast!! (and all others, you choose!!) He is reaquainted with all and I'm a happy medic!

The culprit:

When I was growing up, we had a cat that went missing one day. Six months later he showed back up like nothing was different. Yelled to be let in, went to the food bowls, (we had 3 cats counting him) and slept in his same spots. He went missing six or so months later. He came back six or so months after that. We figured he became a two home cat and was splitting his time between them. That bastid! LOL

It has been raining here since about 8am, sometimes light rain other times heavy thunder, it's back to light rain now. I'm going to need my mud boots to walk in the yard tomorrow. If I had a well I wouldn't need to worry about it drying out with today's steady water supply.

Mine have been going psycho for that Friskies breakfast blend that they released not to long ago. Can't remember the full name, its like Morning something or other and in yellow bag. I get a bag of that and mix it in with their regular foods for hairballs.
