I find it strange that passenger trains in the 21st century are still this much under the control of a human operator.

Death count is to 80 now?  That's sad.

Montreal Metro (With the exception of one line) is automated, but still has an operator in case of issues. Calgary's CTrain has safeties built in so that if a train is travelling too close to the one before it, it gets shut down with brakes applied

Not sure what, if any, automated systems Spain has implemented here, but I agree, you'd think there would be more automation these days

One o the drivers was trapped in his cabin and told the railway station by radio that the train entered the bend at 190km/h (120 mph), reported newspaper El Pais, The speed limit on that section of track is 80km/h (50 mph).
"We're only human! We're only human!" he told the station, the newspaper said, citing sources close to the investigation. "I hope there are no dead, because this will fall on my conscience."

Humans who generally travel well over twice the recommended speed limit while being responsible for hundreds of lives quickly lose that distinction.

I don't trust these computers.  I don't know why the scientists make them.

And a sigh of relief could be heard in the Bombardier administrative council room when news spread that their train was fine, it was just a farking idiot at the commands.

Trains have speedometers?   And in Spain to they read in MPH? Do they have GPS cause it would be a terrible thing to get lost driving a train, in Spain, especially in the r..... never mind but your career would be down the drain.

Yes, yes, and yes. They use GPS on to either automatically alert drivers of their speeding or to brake automatically depending on what jurisdiction they're in. The accident happened in the transition zone between the two systems.

It could still be a mechanical failure, just because he's posted pics of speedometers showing high speeds that doesn't mean they were in lower speed zones.
He could be completely innocent, but a crazed mob of Spaniards just broke down the doors to his hospital and have torn him limb from bloody limb, they ate him!

Regular day: ZOMG employers should respect the privacy of employers and stay out of their life, especially social media!

Day after tragic event: ZOMG why didn't anyone notice what he posted on social media? It obviously revealed his misfit behavior which led to this tragedy!

He was going more than twice the speed limit. Where's the emergency braking, the emergency radio calls, etc.? He's lucky he's under guard or they'd have quartered him by now.

Stated this in the video thread, but there are a fair number of high-speed lines in Spain where the trains regularly reach 250 km/h, with some lines rated for 300+. I'd guess the train in the photo posted by the driver last March is likely not overspeed (dependent obviously on his location, which really could be anywhere in the country), though it certainly comes close to maxing out the speedometer...

It looks to me like the middle derailed first and took out a support for the overhead cables before dragging the rest of the train off with it.

"I really think it's crazy that we hit our kids. Here's the crazy part about it; kids are the only people in the world that you're allowed to hit. Do you realize that? They're the most vulnerable and the most destroyed by being hit but it's totally OK to hit them. And they're the only ones! if you hit a dog they will put you in jail for that shiat. You can't hit a person unless you can prove that they were trying to kill you. But a little tiny person with a head this big who trusts you implicitly: 'fark 'EM, WHO GIVES A shiat! LET'S ALL HIT THEM!' People want you to hit your kid. If your kid is making noise: 'HIT HIM!!!! HIT 'EM!!!! GRRRRRR'"  -Louis C.K.

DC metro WAS automated. WMTA thinks it is better to let people drive that turn off emergency intercoms cause they are annoying.

WMTA is stupid.

ds_4815: dependent obviously on his location

According to the article (so take it with a grain of salt), he mentioned with the picture that he was in an 80 kph zone.

Looking at the slow-motion video ... is there something on the tracks?  It appears to be right where when the train passes over it, the third rail car pops up into the air, 'explodes', then turns the first couple of cars including the engine on their sides.

How about he was busying taking pictures of a speedometer instead of driving a multimillion dollar train while holding 100s of lives in his hands.

This is going to be bad for him.

Now that I look at the video (again and again) it appears that cars four+ are already derailing before they get to what appeared to me to be an object on / next-to the tracks.

yyrkoon: I want to know what that explosion looking explosion was right before that section of the train flew off the tracks...

That was the 2nd engine sliding off - the view is partially blocked by the 1st engine.  Watch the super-slo-mo linked above.
If you mean the "explosion-looking explosion" above the train, that was probably the power line grounding against a pole.  If you mean the explosion-looking explosion near the rails, that's probably dirt and stones being tossed into the air as the engine derailed.
