I don't know, she sounds a little thin to me.

2013-07-25 12:45:17 PM
Dreaming, dreaming of how it's supposed to be
But now this tunic's spinning - around my arms and knees
I feel like I'm disappearing - getting smaller every day
But when I open my mouth to sing - I'm bigger in every way

Heh

She had a beautiful voice. Their music was just kind of schmaltzy.

2013-07-25 01:12:15 PM
Good work on the drumming on that track too. Which was probably also her.

You can hear the hunger in her vocals.

Karen Carpenter died at 32
And if you don't eat a thing then you'll die too

Their parents were their managers and when Richard and Karen were getting ready to record their first album, they insisted that Richard was the singer of the group; that Karen was merely a drummer and only good enough for back-up vocals.

IMHO, her voice was one of the clearest ever. She had a remarkable talent for singing the consonants, unlike a lot of singers who skip from vowel to vowel because they are so much easier to project.

Wish she could have stuck around for a few more years.

Kind of? One of their biggest hits started as a jingle for a bank, and another one was a Bette Midler song they scrubbed free of any adult content.

/read a Karen Carpenter bio once; when the doorbell to her house rang the 5 note refrain of "We've Only Just Begun" (the song from the bank jingle), I started rooting for the diet pills.

They edited out the barfing noises.

She was an excellent singer, both pounds of her.

If Mama Cass had shared half her sandwich with Karen Carpenter they'd both be with us today.

2013-07-25 02:20:50 PM
Something a lot of people don't know is that Karen literally whispered into the microphone while recording and while performing.  That's why she sounds so smooth.

This sounds like a job for Señor Ding Dong.

It's so sad, she was a talented singer.  It's sad that her pic was on the spine of her last album.

Yes, but only light-hearted ones

She kicked ass at drums, too.

Beautiful voice.... just a little heavy sounding for me.

Didn't she use chopsticks for drum sticks?

Those weren't chopsticks, they were her arms!

Eva Cassidy
Annie Lennox

All dead.

She had a remarkable, beautiful voice, but listening her recordings always reminds me that I'm hearing somebody dying slowly, and it makes me very sad.

"Karen!

They say she had the most beautiful voice
but I'd take Wanda or Sandy if I had my choice
And she could play the drums! Even while wearing a dress
but Hal Blaine would take over when they needed the best

Everyone who was there, they have to write about it
They know something bad, they've got to scream and shout it
She starved herself to death with no brother to stop her
But he helps remember her now with this special TV offer

You guys are all assholes.  Do you know what Karen Carpenter would say if she were alive today?  "HELP! GET ME OUT OF THIS FARKING COFFIN!"

Shame that she couldn't sell her house back in the day.

Had no kitchen.

mr_a: She had a remarkable talent for singing the consonants, unlike a lot of singers who skip from vowel to vowel because they are so much easier to project.

I think what you mean to say is that she had excellent singers diction. It's impossible to sing on a consonant, except for the ones that are sometimes vowels, like Y.

Karen Carpenter's voice has freaked me out since the movie "1408."
