it was a success. they sold millions of copies and will be able to sell millions more in a couple of years when they release a version of the game that actually works.

2013-07-25 12:34:33 PM
Ahhh, haven't had a Sim City thread in a while.

2013-07-25 12:40:48 PM
I know it makes me the antichrist and all, but I really enjoy the game now.

2013-07-25 12:40:51 PM
Companies sell loads of copies of crappy games all the time.  Look at Gran Turismo 5.  11 million copies of a broken, half-assed game with 3/4ths of its assets from the previous game from the PS2.  GT6 now leads in pre-order sales at Gamestop, and it's going to be more of the same and barely improved.  All of the things that fans want, such as better engine audio, realistic damage, etc. aren't going to be in it.

They're even now going to make a movie about it.  Go figure.

2013-07-25 12:41:38 PM
My roommate got a free copy of Far Cry 3 out of it, so there was some value there at least.

2013-07-25 12:41:45 PM
Did it sell the required amount?

That's all that matters.

The answer to that question is: YES.

/Because some people are just that retarded that can't do without their shiny.

Wait, wait, wait. So you're telling me EA sells 2 million copies of a photocopied piece of shiat and it's a success, but Hitman: Absolution and Tomb Raider Redux sell nearly 4 million copies a piece and are considered failures by Eidos, failures worthy of restructuring their company and possibly killing off both franchises?! fark you, Planet Earth, I'm getting real tired of your shiat!

Gran Tourismo is a DRIVING  SIMULATOR.

Having owned several of the exotics that are in the game, I can vouch for the validity of the simulations.  It helped me do much better on the track, and on winding hiways.  Including their prior vehicles in the new game is a just fine by me, as it gives me continuity with the previous game.

If you're looking for a good ol smash-em up, you will be disapointed.

With the name recognition and install base that SimCity has, it should've sold WAY more than 2 million.

2013-07-25 12:52:01 PM
Burn in hell, EA... you charged me within seconds of launch for a game that didn't work, you wouldn't offer a refund, you banned me when I did a chargeback through my bank, then made my bank give you the money anyways, arguing that there was "no reasonable expectation of functionality" when I preordered. So now you have my money, and I'm still banned. Fark you, fark everything you do, I'll never give you another penny again. I had bought several EA games, and made microtransactions prior to the launch... since then, exactly 0 dollars to EA from my gaming budget. You're a bunch of farking thieves... if you wnatme to forgive you, start by giving my money back, then *maybe* we can talk about future games, provided you acknowledge a very reasonable expectation of functionality.

That's because Square Enix has no farking clue what they're doing.

Eidos Montreal's boss, Stephen D'Astrous, recently resigned because of it.

"Since last year's financial short-coming performance of Square Enix Europe, we (HQ London and GM Eidos-Montreal) have had growing and divergent opinions on what needed to be done to correct the situation," reads the statement.

"The lack of leadership, lack of courage and the lack of communication were so evident, that I wasn't able to conduct my job correctly. I realised that our differences were irreconcilable, and that the best decision was unfortunately to part ways."

Mainly because we don't bother playing it. I haven't even opened Origin on my PC since that debacle and have zero intention of doing so.

I can say with honesty that I was extremely excited for this game, even went to sign up for the beta with intent to participate heavily if I made it in.

Then they said no OS-X beta.   Okay, fine, I understand that concurrent release across platforms isn't the norm, and was expecting a late release for OS-X anyway.

Then the launch happened, and the articles, and the analysis of what the game was actually doing under the hood.  My excitement went away quickly.  I have yet to purchase it, and doubt that I will.  As sad as that is, as I have dearly loved past Sim City games.

It's not really okay when they still look like the PS2 versions.

That's the power of the PS3?

bemused outsider: If you're looking for a good ol smash-em up, you will be disapointed.

Or just looking for a respectable racing sim.  GT5 was light years behind something like iRacing.  Even ages old PC sims still provided a better level of simulation.  They can't even keep up with their nearest competitor, Forza Motorsport.

How is it a whole game's worth of programming?  Plenty of other simulations handle it just fine.  GT5 couldn't even get basic collision physics down.  Cars just thunk up against a wall and nothing happens.

Interestingly enough, the simulation of a Honda S2000 in stock trim is wildly inaccurate, as is every simulation of a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 in every release.  They are not even close to their real-world counterparts.

Is the game fixed yet? I was dying to buy it but held off after the terrible reviews. Did they fix things with updates yet or just letting it ride? I really don't want to play without the fun of subways and airports.

That was pretty much my response. The letter said I bought a game, they delivered a game, but, and this is an exact quote "there was no reasonable expectation of functionality contained within the purchase agreement." Basically, I paid them for code, they gave me code, and they argued (successfully) to my bank that all of the customers doing chargebacks were unreasonable to expect that code to actually *do* anything.

Frankly, it's the most ass-backwards argument I've ever heard... I mean if I bought a TV or Microwave, got them home, and they didn't work, I'd go right on back to the store and get a refund so I could get something else. EA's argument though is a big part of why I won't do business with them any more... not only are you effectively renting the game from them (when they decide to stop the server, you have no game), you're giving them money with no expectation that you'll even get to play a video game.

You give them money, they decide for how long you can play a game, assuming they let you play it at all.

But there were all these cheerful, identically titled, pre-upvoted Reddits that clearly implied these games were going to be good! They were referencing beloved figures from the entertainment industry and everything! What the hell?

Yeah, me too. Was excited and looking forward to it. Then they borked it up and we're pretty clear what they thought about fans/customers in the bargain. So I never bothered to buy it and likely never will.

It's a damn shame, too. Hitman: Absolution wasn't Blood Money-good but it was still a fine game that gave me plenty of challenge on the higher difficulties, and Tomb Raider was everything the Tomb Raider series should have been from the get-go. What a sorry collection of assholes Square Enix is. They're damn lucky they've got a built in fan-base for the Final Fantasy games, because otherwise they'd be just a memory. Do sims still just go to the first house/job they come to?
Have they implemented 'realistic' families? (you know, same guy goes to same job then back to same house with same wife and kids.)
Do firetrucks/buses/cops still group up and follow each other everywhere?
Will traffic split off congested roads, even if the path is longer?
Do you still have to tear down you school when you build a college?
Can you still get max population with just residential zoning and parks?
Does the population number actually give the true population?

People who actually bought Sim City have no sympathy from me. It said EA right on the box, and if by now someone doesn't realize that EA is synonymous with  every goddamn problem Sim City had from the onset, and has been for years, they're either blind or truly weapons-grade stupid. This is especially true with the collaboration of EA and Maxis for god's sake, need I remind anyone here about  Spore?

This is the goddamn problem with gamers, the gaming industry, and consumers. It ain't the corporations, the devs, or the publishers, at this point. It's the consumers who continue getting hyped up and buying this shiat, knowing damn well what's in store for them, with what I can only describe as a truly poetically just lack of self-awareness.

The 3000GT was only available here as the Dodge Stealth.  The "ES" model, double valves, and 222HP, FWD was the wife's for a while.  I thought the simulator was close: a bit nose heavy and lousy front wheel drive.  You did correct the deliberate wheel mis-alignment they put on all the cars, right?

At a certain population point, the game starts fudging numbers up. Reddit (which I don't frequent, but teh googles sent me there) has done quite a bit of research, down to a guy taking apart the code to find a line that actually says

simcity.GetFudgedPopulation = function (a) {
