Kirzania: Bake your own white bread. Problem solved.
/not THAT hard

Fail.  The issue is that the FLOUR USED is not made of the complete grain.  You would have to grind your own wheat.

So, in other words, don't buy garbage food from huge conglomerates. Got it.

Lobbyists are the threat to your health.

Anyone that calls a mix of separated parts of different grains "whole grain" is either crazy or has large sums of cash paid to him.

Quarterly profits are more important than the health of Americans. Never ever forget that.

Turns out if you eat crappy bread made of mostly non-food ingredients, it doesn't matter whether it's white or whole wheat, it's still slowly killing you.

Who knew??

You can have my bread when you pry it from my cold, crumb covered hands.

I bake it in the winter, but when when it's super hot out, it's not worth heating the entire house up for a load of fresh bread, and DAMMIT now I want to make bread tonight, and it's supposed to be like 95 today.

This is why you actually look at the nutrition information to look at the amount of dietary fiber in the bread that you're buying.  It varies widely, but you can get anywhere from just 2mg per serving to 6mg per serving on products that are otherwise just labeled as "whole wheat".

You have to read the nutrition label to know what's in it? Gosh, good thing I sat down for that news.

Well.... This is old news

My dietitian told me that since I was diabetic to avoid any bread that has 6% or more carbohydrates. White or whole grain? If the whole grain has over 6% it doesn't make a difference. It's the same as white bread at that point.

Wheat bread below 6%? It may be healthy but it can be like eating sawdust with water and yeast baked into a cake.....
Yum

That hard hitting article totally blew away none of my preconceptions about whole grains. I am totally not shocked that the processed bread dyed brown is just as bad as the processed bread bleached white.

Yanks_RSJ: Everything you can eat is simultaneously healthy and going to kill you.

But this will be a nice article to show my GF, who insists on buying the shiatty wheat bread that is no better for you than white bread but a million times worse when it comes to making grilled cheese sandwiches.

An interesting compromise my family has reached is buying oatmeal bread. It is just as delicious as white bread and great for grilled cheese. At the same time it satisfies the health nuts who insist on whole grain. Is it actually healthier? I have no idea and could care less. As long as you get plenty of exercise and eat some fruit every day for digestion I think you should be fine.

Buttknuckle

Why the f*ck does our government allow this blatant and misleading advertisement? I mean, seriously, this is just one example of many. Advertising seems to be a game of dishonesty and a lot of it should be considered criminal.

It has been awhile since our government had a single thing to do with honesty.

The article said nothing to contradict the health benefits of whole grains, though it tried mightily.  The real issue is fraud.  The term "whole grain" has been legally redefined by industry shills so that it's a laughing mockery of what it really is.  And this is nothing new.

There are few, if any, industries out there that have more contempt for their customers than Big Agri.
