Well "'-ish" is a suffix meaning "approximate", so it probably is their best English.

Smeggy Smurf: I only eat potato bread

My brother. *Martins FTW*

CSB:

Was having a conversation about a year ago with my vegetarian, muscle-headed, personal trainer cousin about diet and nutrition. I was fussing at him because every cookout, he tells us all what we shouldn't eat, but his ass never tells you what you CAN eat. So the discussion moves to bread and I proudly say, "I haven't eaten white bread in farking years. All I eat is potato bread." My cousin literally jumped up from his chair, grabbe both of my shoulders and exclaimed, "THAT SHIAT IS THE WORST POSSIBLE BREAD THAT YOU CAN EAT!!! DON'T EAT BREAD AT ALL!!"

Man, did the air go out of my balloon that day. I switched to wheat but I just can't. So, I haven't purchased a loaf of bread in a couple of months. Tuna from the bowl instead of in a sandwich isn't that bad.

worlddan: FloydA: An individual would have to eat 10 bowls of Multi-grain Cheerios, 16 slices of whole-wheat bread, or nine cups of brown rice to get the fiber recommended for an American adult for one day.

I read that too and laughed out loud.

What is sitting on my counter is Sara Lee 100% whole wheat bread. I mean, it's Sara Lee how healthy can it be?? Yet if the nutrition label on the back is to be believed it says that each slice contains 3g of fiber and 5 grams of protein.  That would mean that it only take twelve slices (not 16) to get 100% of the fiber for one day (38g average for men) plus it would also give me 60g of protein which is also exactly the RDA for protein. (Though I personally think the RDA for protein is too low). Since each slice is 100 calories that makes 12 slices of bread 1200 calories, which is basically the minimum amount of daily calories one needs to live.

So twelve slices of freaking Sara Lee bread will keep one alive and meet all one's daily fiber and protein needs.

In yet more words, the article is 100% bullshiat.

Are you sure that's not for two slices?  Although if it's for one slice that's really good.

Yeah, that was actually the first thing that I switched too. But, I couldn't make myself believe that it was actually healthy. I also needed to find out how it can be both 100% wheat and made from potatoes at the same time. The math seems sketchy.

Having grown up eating tough, chewy, almost-black wheat bread from the local bakery (yeah, small-town + a LONG tourism tradition kept it alive through to the late 90s) I find white bread subtly distasteful.

Also, if I'm reading the article right it all boils down to, "read the farking nutrition info on the label, make sure it's actually high-fiber."

I was under the impression whole grain also had more complex carbohydrates.  But I don't know where that idea came from...

Yanks_RSJ: Everything you can eat is simultaneously healthy and going to kill you.

But this will be a nice article to show my GF, who insists on buying the shiatty wheat bread that is no better for you than white bread but a million times worse when it comes to making grilled cheese sandwiches.

I agree that mass-produced wheat bread is worse at grilled cheese, but it does actually taste better than processed white bread in almost every other case.  I don't even know why people eat wonderbread.  Just lick a tub of cornstarch, you'll get as much flavor as the whole loaf.  Or compress it down to a cube the size of a 6-sided die, and eat the whole thing in a single bite.  Why not?

If I make a sandwich at home, I go for the wheat bread if it's one of those mass produced things.  It has flavor, and tastes good.

Of course, with actual bakery bread, even that sold in grocery stores, there's some actual flavor no matter what you buy, so go wild.

The grain is 100% of the grain (less whatever the maker can weasel out of the definition via regulatory capture) but the bread is whatever mix of grain and potato their recipe calls for.  If memory serves the potato (in general) is a good food base if your diet is very simple, it has all the vitamins and minerals (except vitamin...A? I think?) as well as more simple carbohydrates and cholesterols than you probably want.

Also most mass-produced potato bread is going to be made with over-processed and preservative-laden potato flakes, but I'm drawing these conclusions from Wikipedia and dusty memories of a discovery channel show, independent confirmation advised.

If you want healthy you know how:  eat more salad, eat more All Bran, and exercise.  We don't do it because we don't want to.

2013-07-25 02:06:24 PM

Head_Shot: As a former baker, I can tell you it's really not that hard to make your own awesome bread from scratch. A big KitchenAid mixer helps obviously, but even by hand, you can make enough bread for a month (or more) with about 45 minutes of actual work. The process take half a day - but it's mainly waiting around for the dough to proof, then baking. For shiats-n-giggles, add whole grain ingredients like oats, sunflower seeds, millet seeds, etc.

Whoops, I probably just gave away where I used to work to those who are baking savvy. :-)

I'm right there with you, I love bread, but have always thought the preservatives in commercial bread can't be healthy, it takes 2 weeks for mold to form what is it doing to your body, but I would never go through the effort to bake bread every couple of days.  A bread maker on the other hand, throw in the ingredients, set timer, go to work, come home and fresh bread just finishing the baking cycle.

I have pretty much been eating food for like Ezekiel bread for the past three years.  yes, it takes a little bit of time to get used to , but it's good.
Dunno about carb percentage, but it's listed as "Low Glycemic"

You may want to look into it if you haven't.

They also make a "genesis" break which I find a little more tasty than the exekiel, but dunno if it is low glycemic.

Check them out, and ask your doc if they are OK for you.

Mudd's woman: I am not into that paleo diet trend, but I did try a recipe for "paleo bread" that was full on awesome.

Talk about whole grain. Not for the weak-intestined.

Hell on your teeth, though.

DROxINxTHExWIND: That sounds delicious, but naw, this dude is too far gone. If he thought he ate butter he'd probably take a suicide pill. Crazy thing is, he's always been the type who could shovel all types of shiat into his pie hole and never gain a pound. He's not a former fatty who's seen the light. He's a naturally muscled guy who got heavy into fitness because he was banging women at the gym. At some point it stopped being about the women and he started getting serious about it. Too damn serious if you ask me.

Did it ever take him more than 26 minutes?
