I haven't received any spam in my promotions tab.  I don't even get notices on my phone for it.

2013-07-25 01:16:02 PM
I just think it makes my mail interfaces messy.

2013-07-25 01:22:13 PM
I got rid of the tabs immediately.

2013-07-25 01:22:18 PM
Meh - it makes it easier for me to delete a lot of crap email, and Google doesn't send me much spam.

2013-07-25 01:22:40 PM
It stole my garbage bill and put it into promotions. Got rid of the tabs ASAP.

I'm kind of enjoying the porn tab.

2013-07-25 01:27:50 PM
What are these tabs you speak of?

2013-07-25 01:31:02 PM
The tabs started stealing legit mail that should have been in the inbox proper (receipts and notifications for online purchases).

They got turned off immediately; they will not be turned back on.

Google is tuning into Microsoft. We know what you want and how you want it.

I like them, it sorts the bullshiat for me, and is easy to cycle through to check to see what's going where.

Only promotional bullshiat I've received is bullshiat I've signed up for, nothing from Google yet.

Google has just generally been pissing me off something fierce lately. Between them begging me to create a Google+ account every time I get anywhere near any of their services, Youtube begging me to use my real name all the time and the constant cluttering-up of Gmail I'm really starting to consider seeking other options.

Even ignoring that I didn't exactly have a problem with promotional emails cluttering up the Inbox in the first place, the promotions tab in particular stole two of my emails in the last 12 hours - an appointment reminder and a trouble ticket response - so I didn't notice them until just now when it occurred to me to check that tab.

Farking Google.... the whole reason I liked you was that your shiat was simple and focused on function over form, why are you completely abandoning that?

I like the social media tab.  Now I don't have FB notifications cluttering up my inbox.

I'll remember that the next time they shove Google+ in my face and tell me I can't write reviews of restaurants on Google or rate apps in the Play Store until I create one even though Google+ has nothing to do with either.

I went into the tabs settings and it was all sorted wrong. My forum notifications, for some reason, made it into my promotions tab, as did a whole bunch of other important stuff. Mail that should have gone into promotions ended up in my other tabs. It's a faulty, stupid system, and about as annoying as an overzealous spam blocker. I turned my tabs off.

Thanks, Google, but no thanks. Come back when you're intelligent enough to  actuallysort mail. Correctly.

I get very little spam at all in my Gmail. 1 or 2 messages every few days. Not sure how people are doing this one wrong...

2013-07-25 02:17:47 PM
I haven't gotten anything from Google on my promotions tab. Either in my main account, or any of my hosted domain accounts (of which I have 3)

2013-07-25 02:18:24 PM
I got sick of their "Add a photo to Google+ !" pitch every few days. I finally reported it as spam.

If I wanted to add a photo to google+, which I signed up for and never used because it sucks and is vacant of anybody I'd want to connect with, I would add the farking photo whenever I farking please. I don't need 3 emails a week "reminding" me how much awesomer g+ would be if only I added a profile photo.

Also, I second the sentiment on YouTube pestering about using our real name. That shiat is annoying and feels as pushy as Facebook.

Recently had to try and deal with Google's account recovery system to get back into my youtube account.

Pain in the ass for me because my google account was created automatically off my youtube account as part of their integration.  On a date I didn't know.  And it's one of the required 'you must answer this' questions to recover your password.  Also, by God you'd better use some of their other services and know EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM, otherwise no you can't have your account back.

Also, no phone support and no easy access to email support either?  Automated only REALLY sucks for oddball situations, and the only way I found a form to send that would result in a real human seeing it was by trolling Youtube (irony ho!) for videos on it and finding a link to an old form that way.  One that isn't available through their support page directly.  On top of that, the agent wouldn't respond to emails, and for some godawful reason Google's mail server is rejecting receiving emails from my Yahoo account, which is the one my Youtube is tied to for recovery, so I couldn't email them.

Honestly, 10 minutes on the phone would have worked, but it ended up resulting in about 3 days of mess because the damned agent didn't answer for over 24 hours between emails on the subject.  I can understand several hours of delay, I'm sure they're busy, but for fark's sake it shouldn't be 24 hours before you get back to me after you send me your first email!

I laughed my ASS off afterwards when they sent me a 'how did we do' survey.

yeah, i haven't seen any difference in emails since the change other than the usual being organized into 3 tabs

"As always, advertising keeps Google and Gmail free to use. We work hard to make ads safe, unobtrusive, and relevant. Instead of ads always appearing at the top of your inbox, they've been relegated to a more appropriate place in your Promotions tab to create a better overall experience."

Well, that AND selling your personal information, browsing history and porn preferences.

You can drag and drop the mis-sorted (not "stolen") email to the proper tab. It then automatically will make sure all email from that sender goes to that tab from now on. And when you log in to gmail the tabs tell you how many unread emails are in there.

I switched over to the tabs layout today, it is completely intuitive and means I get less non-important email notifications on my phone because they are in the social media/promotions/updates tabs instead of the main one.

Knocking on wood, but Gmail's spam filters are designed by God. By this time 90% of my mail would be offering me penis enlargement pills, but not ONE has come through.

When I saw them, the first thing I said was WTF are those ugly things? and then figured out how to get rid of them.

Bad news is that the text-only ads are back and my adblock isn't working on them. As long as they stay plain text*, I will probably tolerate them.

*but who are we kidding, this is Google so that won't last

I prefer ti just select and click "Not a promotion" or whatever. Hopefully, Gmail will learn from this and stop putting these emails in the promotions category at all.

I'll decide what categories/labels my mail should be, thankyouverymuch. I don't need Google trying to make those decisions for me.

Wow, really people?

Google takes away the ads that are always there, puts them on a back tab with all the other quasi-spam where you never see it unless you specifically go looking for it, and this UPSETS YOU?

What the hell is wrong with you people?

Uh, that is exactly what we've been using gmail for for years now.  It automatically filters things into different folders based on what it thinks is the correct answer.  Its just that before now the only folder it sorted into was marked "Spam".  Now you have the ability to make your own tabs, and teach it to sort things into those tabs for you automatically?  Thats freaking awesome.

Make a tab for your girlfriend/wife, so when you get something from her it doesn't get lost in the clutter.  Make a tab for for ebay correspondance, or one for password notifications.  This is a seriously good thing.

Gmail lost me some number of months ago.  They've turned the UI into too awful a mess.  This was just one good reason to never go back.

Flying Code Monkey: Gmail lost me some number of months ago.  They've turned the UI into too awful a mess.  This was just one good reason to never go back.

What do you do instead?  The only alternatives I've come up with are:
1. Go through the extraordinary hassle of making my server host my mail by going through the whole sendmail setup bullshiat train.
2. Go to Microsoft or Yahoo, who are as or more terrible than Google.
3. Go with some super dinky unreliable service.

2013-07-25 03:53:14 PM
Honestly, they may not have an obvious system for it, but I'm fairly sure google sells email lists too. I can't count how many times I've searched for something and then started getting spam related to it on the account associated with the google account. And this is on different systems, so it's likely not just a malware issue..

Yes, but that seems like something I'd have to do, which puts it directly in contention with my having to do nothing. And since I see no downside to the system in which I'm doing nothing nor any upside to the system in which I must do something... well... you can see my dilemma.

It only benefits people who get a very large volume of emails per day. For most people it's just pointless and aggravating added complexity.

It only needs to hide one phone/power/internet/etc bill from you for the time it costs you to be orders of magnitude greater than the time it saves you. Which it will, because predictive algorithms suck.

This would only upset me if they didn't give me the option of not using tabs. They gave me the option to turn it off, so it's cool.

But, I must say, I have no idea what you're talking about. What ads are "always there?" I don't know what you mean.

I wonder about CAN-SPAM compliance though. If they LOOK and WORK like email to a user, they are then email from a consumer perspective. Thus if I cannot opt out of Google putting these in my promotion tab (without disabling the tab altogether), I'd argue that this is illegal.

So now my insurance bill shows up with a bunch of spam along with it that I never dealt with before, rather than sidebar ads I could easily ignore. Awesome. It wouldn't be so irritating had they asked me to opt IN to this tab rather than foisting it on me and making me turn it off (and it keeps turning itself back on).
