Okay, subby, that's kind of funny for anyone who read her interview in the NYT.

I'll give it a pass, but seriously: Carolyn?  She's Caroline, which wouldn't be a big deal if she wasn't THE "Sweet" Caroline (Bum-bum-baaah) Kennedy of Neil Diamond legend.

And her qualifications for this august responsibility are what, exactly?

Stone Meadow: And her qualifications for this august responsibility are what, exactly?

Answer: A presidential endorsement a few years ago. Other than that, nuttin.

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

I bolded it and bigged it to show exactly how outrageous this is.  If we start giving ambassadorships to random assholes based on campaign contributions, or nominal fame, or as favors, then what's next?

Fart a lot, Thankbongo!

Yeah, I guess her qualifications are no worse than "made a large campaign donation".

Seeing that she was ~12 when he wrote that song makes the "touching me touching you" part a little creepy.

Meh.  It's not like Japan's going to declare war on us because she didn't bow enough or something.

About the same as the guy who is leaving the post.  He had no diplomatic qualifications to speak of when he took the job.

She should just end all her sentences with です

Donate $1.8m and you too can be an ambassador.

Why not both?

So Republicans - the folks who made Arnold Schwarzenegger governor of our most populous state - are questioning the qualifications of the nominee for Ambassador to Japan?

She's a Kennedy so the Democratic party will slobber her metaphorical knob at any given chance. And she "donated" a lot of money to the campaign

Maybe if she starts a war some of this Kennedy worship nonsense will die down.

I hear ya. I just wish her qualifications were better than "made a large campaign donation".

(I know, I know. I won't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.)

All the more reason to know the connection!  It is kinda terrifying!

The same as any ambassador to any of our close allies: not really any at all.

We have two types of ambassadoral postings: those which which are basically figureheads, where the ambassador doesn't even need to know the language, because we deal directly with the country's head of government whenever we need to, and everything else is handled by State Department employees  (ie, France, Germany, the UK, Japan, Italy, Australia, etc etc etc) and tough posting, which go to long-time state department experts who've spent their lives dealing with the country in question (almost all of Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, large portions of South and Central America, etc)

It actually works pretty well as a system. In a case like this, the question to ask isn't "How experienced is the person?" it's "How well will they be liked by the dignitaries of that country?"

When you're going through something, desu? Whether it's a wonderful thing like having a child or a sad thing like losing somebody, you often feel like 'Oh my God, I'm so overwhelmed; I'm dealing with this huge thing on my own,' desu. In fact, poetry's a nice reminder that, no, everybody goes through it, desu. These are universal experiences, desu.

Given that Japan, you know, might be going, you know,  nose to nose with the PRoC, you know, she might find herself, you know, in deeper waters than she, you know, knows.

Ambassador appointments are ridiculous.  Give your friend the closest thing we've got to being an American aristocrat, with no actual qualifications required.

Here you go.  I made ya's a petition to withdraw the nomination.

When was the last time the GOP won the presidency without a Nixon or a Bush on the ticket?

Also "e to...", at least if Akiba-sensei's verbal pauses are anything to go by....
